1. Yep - keeps telling me I'm doing it wrong. Story of my life... Jon.
 2.
Anyone heard of them before, product range look's good http://www.tuscanyguitars.com/tuscany_jag_red.html
There have been a couple of previous threads, but the search ain't working for me so I can't find 'em. Jon.
 3. This is an early 70s (not 60s) JapCrap Les Paul bass copy, it would've been shortscale (probably 30 - 32") so you'd have real trouble finding a bass neck to fit. If you put a guitar neck on, you will have to reposition the bridge fittings to suit the scale length, which should be around 25". If you do a conversion & put 6-pole guitar pickups in, I'll buy the bass 'buckers off you. Jon.
 4.
What a cow. I don't even think she's that nice looking really. (sorry marvin). FENDER P-BASSES i mean what's up with them!!!?
The world's gone mad. Roasted necks? I ask you... And well - she's a Terminator. They do that sort of thing, it's the programming. J.
 5.
Why covers? Well, why originals? * Greater financial rewards from song publishing, etc? Unlikely in most instances if you're 'only the bassplayer'. * Moral superiority? Unproven * Increased likelihood of being 'signed' - possibly, but only if you're a pretty boy to start off with * Greater social cachet? Sigh.
None of the above for me. I write songs which I think are good & I want to play them live. I have no idea if they are actually any good. I see so many original bands who are absolutely tragically awful on every possible level, yet they go out in front of an audience and parade their ineptitude with utter pride & confidence in their songs, their bands, their musicianship. But they're terrible. I have absolutely no idea whatsoever if I'm any different. J.
 6.
I like Garbage, the singer's really nice
Depends what you mean by "nice" - by her own admission, she sh*t on her boyfriend's cornflakes. Jon.
 7.
That's a fair assessment I suppose Jon. I'm probably being highly contentious now, but I really do think a large proportion of bassists picked up the instrument because it is easier to play bass with a (simple song-playing) band than it is to play any other stringed instrument. That's not contentious, that is just the truth. However, I do think that a lot of those bassists may have adopted or already held a "second class citizen" attitude, to themselves, the bass, or both and don't even feel worthy or confident to be considered "equal" in their band and have to come on a bass forum to moan about it because they think we are all the same. That may be contentious
Not my experience (I was inspired to play by bassists who made an upfront, band-defining racket) but I strongly suspect you have a point. The second-class citizen thing does seem pretty endemic in many attitudes - this whole "we only exist to make guitarists/singers sound better" thing, and that "What makes a bad bassist" thread, which has so many variations on the idea that if the audience becomes aware of you, then you're by definition crap. To be honest, I don't know why people who think like that actually play at all. J.
 8. Paul h & Nigel - that's most bassists in originals bands. I suppose being just the one bassist myself, maybe I presume too much, but I don't think so. Numerous threads on here involve people being told what to play, being sacked/failing auditions for playing too much/above the 12th fret (or not having a Precision or SVT!), generally moaning about being musically a second-class citizen in some guitar player's band. It's also reflected in my own experience and that of many bassists I've known over the years. It certainly looks to me like this typifies the experience of most bassists, and makes it easier & more acceptable to see the move to playing covers as being pretty much inevitable. J.
 9.
f*** me, Jon, that's extremely contentious!
Is it, though? If you create a piece of music, spend weeks honing the ideas and communicating them to your bandmates, have a clear idea of how you'd like it performed and what enhancements you want the other musicians to bring, practice & refine it until it's right, and finally end up with some thing you love - then it's going to mean a little bit more to you than cranking out Brown Sugar for the 200th time down at the Stoat & Spigot. Most bassists in originals bands don't have a huge creative input (been in plenty of "other people's" bands!) and even less so in a covers situation. I have played covers but only alongside an originals band, and while I enjoyed it (mostly) and certainly got paid & laid far more than in any originals band, on reflection it was an empty experience that from my perspective had a negative impact on the "proper" band. If it was a choice between that & not playing at all, I really don't know. It just made me aware that I'm a creative musician, not a pub entertainer. J.
 10. I think I might've missed the boat with this one, but most bass players are happy to play covers because most bass players are not composers, and therefore have no particular personal investment in the music they are playing. Jon.
 11.
If they do a European tour we could be in for a bit of a treat, new stuff, MP, B sides???? Not just the coast to coast US set. I know what you are saying about Peart, although he did come across better than I expected on "beyond the lighted stage".
Not seen it yet, but I would think he'd be on his best behaviour! Hot Tub - not sure Geddy can do the vocals for a lot of the pre-Permanent Waves stuff justice any more. They've been playing 2112 dropped to D for years now - and it don't sound right! Their recent stuff's been quite hit-or-miss for a while but I am looking forwards to the new album, mostly because it seems it'll be a story-based concept affair. About bloody time! J.
 12. "Frister Swinging Bass"? Brilliant! Think this one's Korean, judging by the hardware & mahogany veneers. J.
 13.
Given he's the guy who bought my CMI a few weeks ago I'm assumming these are the parts of that (Went a bit CSI there on you all). Not really sure why he;d sell them to be honest but I can vouch for the fact that when I sold em they worked and that bass did have a lovely tone, no doubt about it. The neck pickup in particular was awesome.
That's a real shame - your bass looked like an excellent original example. If it had sold on here it would be a lot less likely to have gone to some twonk who wants to butcher it. Oh well. J.
 14.
They may even announce dates on the awards night.
Be cool if they did but I doubt it - they have an album to finish. I would far sooner wait a bit longer for them to tour supporting the new album than have them bring the current tour over here. J.
 15.
Re listed Columbus. Columbus I actually offered the lad £120 for it when it didn't sell last time (before I got another one) and he said he thought it was worth £150. Can't help but think he;d get that if he offered delivery. Looks nice though with a maple f/board, ain't seen one of those before.
Nice bass, not very common with the maple board. He'll be lucky to get £150 though - Antorias are selling for less than a ton these days & Columbus doesn't have the same reputation or (spurious) Ibanez connection. J.
 16. Just more evidence of how JapCrap ain't shifting at the moment. A year or so ago I think it would've got the original £180 - they are pretty uncommon & Westones on the whole were getting good coin. Love the 2-tone metalflake finish - if it was a Dynasty in the same colours I might be tempted... Jon.
 17. That is quite spectacular. You could stick your leg under the action - but by 'eck it would look great on the wall! Jon.
 18.
What are they worth?
The Hohner's in the £150-£200 ballpark, depending on condition - very nice basses for the price range, too. The Egypt's anyone's guess - might be worth getting in contact with Jimmy (who works out of CC Music in Glasgow these days) and seeing what value he'd place on it: [email protected] Absolutely amazing looking bass - if Jimmy says £50, I'll have it. Jon.

Cheapskate! J.
 20. 6 & half a dozen, really - there's every likelihood both brands are made in the same factories anyway. They both have an excellent reputation for top quality low & intermediate cost instruments, so realistically it's down to personal preference based on styling, sound & feel. Jon.
 21.
if i described Rock music as mindless thrashing and loathsome and insubstantial i would expect a comment or two...
I'd be broadly inclined to agree, though! However if you applied the description to a specific band (like wot I did) and I happened to disagree with your assessment then we could have a proper argument! J.
 22.
Well he is Canadian. You DO know his history don't you?
Yes I do, and I have read several of his dismal books, and I'm well aware of the fact he doesn't write them for Rush fans, because he has an incredibly low opinion of the people who buy his records, attend his gigs, and, (like it or not, Neil) buy his awful books. Especially if they're European. Shut up & play the drums, Purt, just shut up & play the drums. J.
 23.
oh i do hate that term 'lift music'!!...its not open minded and a little sad, and lacking in a knowledge of music...
That's an awful lot you infer about me from my use of a common generalisation, about which you then say:
i understand the stigma attached to it...and what your refering to but its such a blanket term for music like this...
I could have used any number of other descriptions - I described much of last weeks show as "sickly aural gloop", which would be ideal for Jay Kay & chums - but I don't particularly like to repeat myself. And by your own admission you know exactly what I meant by "lift music".
you dont like it im sure but some of the "lift music" you refer too are some of the best musicians in the world..
Good & bad is subjective & personal, but you won't need me to tell you the best musicians don't necessarily make the "best" music. J.
 24. I'll watch & cringe on Friday. Always found Jamiroquai, once you get past the good musicianship, to be purveyors of thoroughly loathsome & insubstantial lift music. I don't expect much has changed. Jon.
 25.
The Canadian trio will jet to London to pick up the accolade at the event
Schoolboy error - no they won't. Two of them will attend, while Peart stays home moping around and writing interminably dull, long-winded & self-important books about how much he hates this awful, awful job he has, and how much he prefers riding around on his motorbike. Jon.
