  1. Had my 'growth talk' at work yesterday. A sort of career progression thing that must be really handy for the younger engineers especially.

Boss's first question (admittedly with his tongue firmly in his cheek): "So Rich, where do you see yourself in 5 years..?"

    Me: "Retired."

Boss: "Want to expand your skillset? Anything you'd like to do in the meantime?"

Me: "Exactly what I'm doing now will suit me fine, ta."

    End of talk. :)

I tend to find these HR box-ticking exercises tiresome.

I'm doing what I do, it's the right mix of interesting, challenging, routine, inventive, procedural, ad-hoc, variety, and fulfillment for me; I don't need to fill in forms to say so.

Setting goals and suchlike are an irrelevance; if the business gets to the point where they don't need me then they'll ditch me and if I decide it's time then I'll move on.

I've been working in pretty much the same niche for years and have no desire or ambition to be "promoted" or chase any other perceived progression or career path.

I'm happy in my lane and have no plans to retire.

  2. Just worked out "Mr Blue Sky",  What a great bassline!

Oi! - I never said the bassline wasn't any good...

...but then again I can't say I've ever listened to it, as my ears don't like the song.

    Fast asleep on her bed.

      That's good news.

Hopefully she'll understand that you need to take more care over other people's perceptions going ahead.

I'm sure I have one somewhere  - no idea where that somewhere is currently though!

Fortunately, I've managed to avoid using rail services for the past few years.

It occurs to me, though, that perhaps they should look to attract customers (like me) back rather than save costs.

  8. Never ever buying anything from BassDirect again. Purchased a Tech 21 YYZ pedal through their reverb store, paid for it and then got a message saying it's out of stock and been refunded but my refund will take 3-5 days to process which means I'm out of pocket until then and can't go purchase one somewhere else until that money is back in my account.

I saw a car last week on ebay.

I went to the garage on the weekend and it wasn't there - no sign of it.

      It's still up on ebay.

Clickbait - if they get folks to pay then it prevents them going to competitors sites.

The warning is when a shop's price is significantly lower than elsewhere.

  11. I have reason to believe that an ebay seller I recently purchased from has been giving my name and address out to third parties without my consent. I think this is a breach of GDPR and the Data Protection Act. What are my options?

If it's a business there are legal steps to take and the penalties can be significant.

      If it's an individual I don't know.

  13. In the entirely hypothetical case of a Basschatter who does NOT own an iPhone, exactly how excited does the panel believe that Basschatter should be about tonight's mega-upgrade?

Personally, I'm filing this under "a good day to bury bad news".

      What's an "upgrade"?

(I thought they were all battery life downgrades...)

I guess the first thing is to ensure it's been put back together properly after installing (eg. cog the right way up).

      What finish is it (chrome/gold/nickel)?

  17. How can you safeguard against scams on Fb Marketplace?
There's a bass for sale on there I really would like, but I don't know how to safeguard against getting scammed. 😟

I've had several things not go ahead because the seller went quiet or wanted unsecured payment.

It might've been that they couldn't be bothered, sold it to someone, or were a scammer - who knows...

You just have to shrug and move on.

Any for sale offer which specifies PayPal F&F or bank transfer should immediately trigger the suspicion-o-meter!

I'd be checking the location of the screw holes on the base plate too, rather than turning the headstock into Swiss cheese...

Never pay people who aren't your friend or family using PayPal Friends & Family (the clue is in the name!) or any other unsecured method.

You can try searching for comments regarding the seller; a lot of groups post warnings about scammers.

You can try joining a group which focuses on the particular item/brand to see if it's listed there.

Personal collection is best, because then you can see the thing and confirm its condition.
I've bought and sold many items via FB, though mainly via groups rather than plain marketplace.

  24. Spotted a really handsome P copy on my local Farcebook marketplace... nice purple finish with only a couple of minor dings, maple neck, on close viewing the action looked pretty low which was a good sign, and very cheap too... so I thought I'd get it as a possible base for modding... send a message... I missed it by 10 minutes apparently 😭

This one's not in the best condition, but it'll do to hold everything together whilst I'm getting the parts.
