1. You are obviously jamming with some mate's and the next step is to get a set together and get gigging. Playing to an audience takes it to another level. Also check out jam/open mic nights that some pubs and music venue's have. Lots of good advice from AM, and as others have said fitting in with the drummer is much more important than the guitars. Listen to the kick in particular. When you get more confidence you can start playing around the beat but that is another ball game and needs something I dont have, a drummer that wont speed up or slow down when you do it.
2. Has Bernie got any in fat bastard size yet?
3. Unfortunately you will find lots of different opinions on compressors as well as everything else. If your amp (or the Hartke interweb) has a manual it might give some indication of what the other settings are and what the knob does (usually threshold). And read the basschat wiki so you know what the knobs do. I use an EBS Multicomp which is one of the few I have not seen dissed. Not cheap though.
4.
Where portability is desired for small gigs I'd add a 2x10, not a 1x15. Preferably the same brand, using the same drivers, at twice the impedance of the 4x10.
Post #5 It what I would recommend. I would not bother with a 1x15.
5.
I'm Spartacus! It's a joke name sir like Silluis Soddus or Biggus Dickus
No. Spartacus and Bigus Dickus were real people.
6. Bugger - what am I going to use now while my Rumour is being fettled? I know - there is a nice red 4 string Rumour
7.
yo ebs it works by someone giving me there stingray 5 plus cash and i buy a freless 5 stingray i have lined up then i will have fretless and fretted. i started playing when louis and pino were hot. and then not forgetting mr king. i had mr johnson, larry graham, stan clarke constantly played to me buy my 6 uncles of whom all are musos plus my bro and papa are bass players i just have a thing for stinrays.always seem to go back to them.
A stream of consciousness that mere mortals, confined to the English language, are unable to comprehend
8. I have got a 34inch bass tuned quite happy to BEAD. You can do it to any bass.
9. These are my favourite electric upright by miles. They dont look right without the curves (nudge, nudge). If only I had room
10. Another recommendation for moulded plugs. They are the best for getting even attentuation across the frequency spectrum.
11. Thats an interesting theory and I shall shortly be putting to the test. My fretless has the Schaller 2000 bridge that I really dont rate so its getting replaced by a Hipshot model A in ali that will make up for loss of mass with through body stringing. Before it had Mwah for England Find out soon.
12. Yes I tend to agree - nobody knows what makes a good mwah. You could try varnishing the fingerboard - it worked for Jaco
13.
Jamerson started playing jazz in 1954 and played on many jazz sessions before he joined Motown. His early influences were jazz players like Percy Heath, Ray Brown, and Paul Chambers. This qoute from an interview in 1979 says it all - 'Bass players call from all over, wanting to know what type of equipment I use, what type of bass, what kind of strings-- things like that. I'll tell them, but that's not what's important; it's the feel. The strings don't make the sound, it's the feel. It's all in here, in the heart'. I wonder what he'd make of basschat !
Ray Brown was definitely influenced by Blanton. He even re-recorded some of the piano-bass duet's Ellington recorded with Blanton on an album called "This One's For Blanton" shortly before Duke Ellington died.
14.
How much are ER15 from specsavers?
Same as everywhere else, about £160.
15. I expect it was Jimmy Blanton of the Duke Ellington band 39-41. Thats where modern jazz bass started. I may have stuck something in the wiki.
16. It wont be there in two weeks time
17. Cant remember which one I tried. Nice but no GB Edit - thinking about it - it was the middle one.
18. Its a shame they just look wrong !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
19. Here we go again. Whats up? Is it a case of "I can only afford a cheap bass so anyone with an expensive bass is a c***"? I dont have to apologise to anyone for my GB's - I can afford them and thats all there is to it. They look, play and sound fabulous. Better than a Squire VMJ? Yes in my opinion. YMMV
20. I have been wondering why basschat has not been so satisfying recently. Now I realise its not had any pathetic sales threads from the Dobbins boys recently I expect Trev has been too busy shagging
