1. I have just updated the lightweight amp and cabs bit on the wiki if anyone is interested
2.
Peavey cabs are quite efficient, but a little lacking in tone. I had a 4x10TVX and 115BXBW and ran it with a few different heads/rigs and it was never anything really special.
Thats cos you were mixing cabs
3.
Yes. It has 150 unusually powerful watts inside it, which is equivalent to 250 of the normal watts you find in most other amplifiers, and 400 of the slightly feeble imitation watts you find in Behringers. They are getting celebrity endorsement for it from Normal Watts-Roy, who is changing his name to Unusually Powerful Watts-Roy in honour of the amplifier.
I do remember one poster who claimed his watts were louder than everyone else's.
4. People like Badass cos you dont have to drill new holes. I have just shaved a good half pound of weight from my fretless by replacing the heavey Schaller 2000 with an Ali Hipshot A. I was going to string through body to compensate for the lack of mass but TBH it still sounds great so I may not bother. I think rigidity is probably more important than mass, and as often the case the benefit of high mass may be nonsense.
5. Maybe not stacking is trying to tell you something. The matching cab seems like a good idea.
6. It is smoke and mirrors and marketing BS. If you are not loud enough then switching impedance to get more watts from your amp wont make any difference. It will keep all the numpties that think they have to get every bean from their amp happy I guess but at what price?
7. One thing I have noticed with Jamerson, he is always looking at his fingers at what he is playing. All the pictures show this and the live clip of him playing with Marvin.
8. Articulate is a word I use to describe the sound I get from my basses and rig. I think its a great word and a much better description than "hi fi" that has overtones of sterility. It means clear, comprehensible, distinct; to rip off my dictionary. In common with lots of bass players I have had a long drawn out conflict with the other guys in the band cos I am too loud. The reason I was too loud was so I could hear what I was playing. Since I got my GB basses and EBS followed by Genz Benz rigs, I can hear what I have been playing much more clearly and consequently I have rarely been asked to turn down. In fact, on occasions the guys in the band have reluctantly told me I am not loud enough Thats not to say you need this gear to be articulate. Jamerson was articulate with a P bass and flats, firstly because of his superb technique and also because the bass was so high in the mix on Motown records, something that made the records stand out at the time and in away was responsible for the bass coming to be such a significant part of the sound of modern music. Having said that, gear that helps bass players articulate is very useful in the Dog And Duck, much more so than at Wembley Stadium. I know that lots of players dont like a sound that helps them articulate and after all that is a matter of individual choice. I used to be much the same until the fateful day when I met Bernie, played one of his basses through an EBS rig, and completely changed my outlook on bass. Anyway I thought it would be interesting to discuss this rather than doing mixing cabs and how does walnut sound different to alder all over again
9. You can always wait for something to come up on here. Some members have a high turnover
10. The tuner out can be used to keep the tuner on all the time (if you dont like the effect of your tuner on the sound) cos its not on the signal path. Some fretless players like to keep the tuner on to make sure they are playing in tune.
11.
The OP wanted a cab to use for his acoustic band and then add a cab for louder playing. A 112 would work there but maybe instead of a second 112, he could look at a barefaced cab, for instance, instead of another 12? The GS112's are 42lbs which most people find ok for a 1 hand lift, but I don't! If the GS112's had 2 handles I might still be using them but I went for the Bergantino, which sounds great and is only 30lbs.
Here you go again I know you are really happy with the sound you get from mixing cabs but it is a lottery, with increasing odds if you are buying blind (or should that be deaf). I am sure Alex does not know how one of his cabs would work with a different 112.
12.
In fact, the recessed tuners do serve a purpose other than looks.... As you can see, the headstock has thick Maple veneers on the front and back of the headstock, along with some thin black veneer in between. Using the veneers means that the headstock wood itself must be planed down to be able to get to the required thickness to fit the tuners. So, rather than having a very thin amount of neck wood (and therefore a smaller gluing area on the scarf joint) I prefer to leave the headstock nice and thick and recess the tuners instead. Not only does it look good (in my opinion of course ) it makes for a very strong headstock. I realise that the pickups might not be everyone's cup of tea (I prefer the look of a nice slim soapbar pickup myself) but it was what the customer wanted. Although they might look the 'wrong way around' to some people, it actually works really well, and provides a surprisingly wide range of tones from such a simple setup.
I came to the same conclusion regarding the recessed tuners when I thought about it a bit more.
13.
Are you ok ferret? You seem to have come over all queer?
I just realised my dictionary is not great. Just underneath "gay" is says GB is Great Britain when we all know it is Goodfellow Basses
14. Yes it does look nice - in a close up of the head. Not sure if anyone else would notice It may be a solution if you did not want to angle the head back and not use string trees. Might work on a Fender style head without trees.
15. I cant recall ever seeing a bad word about Aguillar cabs. Small but not light. You might want to look at the non Neo Bergs as well. Lightweight wise the little Berg AE's, Dr Bass, Genz Benz and the TecAmp (if you can find anyone selling them), Epifani, Accugrove etc etc all make good light cabs. Alex is working on some Barefaced 12's that look good as well. MarkBass cabs do not appear to be as popular as the amps.
16.
I quite liked it and I think the recessed tuners look awesome!
But why? Is it a solution to a problem that does not exist? And I still think the pups suck visually - does that compensate for the recessed tuners? If the pups had been the same width and the same poles it would look OK but it just looks wrong. But then if thats what the customer wanted you cant criticise the builder, apart from not trying hard enough to talk them out of it.
17. And having played that 65 jazz, it was absolutely fabulous. Not sure what is wrong with trying to recover the word gay though.
18. Acording to my dictionary gay is brightly coloured. So are highly figured tops gay? Are LED's gay?
19. Moderation backlog? Perhaps he was using the word as originally intended before the homosexual community hijacked it; but I doubt it. Personally I have never seen anything gay about sticking ...................................... etc. Perhaps we should steal the word back
20.
One of his basses : Cheers Jack
Aye. Saw that when I stumbled into his photo hosting on Flickr. Nice woodwork and a proper cap, not a veneer so you keep the wood with a forearm champher but those pickups look horrible - IMO of course
21. Hmm. I cant be arsed to register for a forum I am never going to use so I'll take your word for it. Seems to me his web presence could be improved
22.
I'm of the opinion that wood type does influence the tone of a bass...but only cats and bats can hear the difference...i'd say the same about 'high mass' bridges..
Having just replaced the high mass Schaller 2000 with a lightweight Hipshot A on my fretless and saved about 1/2 lb in weight I an inclined to agree. Still got MWAH in spades and still sings. I was thinking about through body stringing as well but I'm not so sure now.
23. Thats gonna be sweet, apart from having too many strings of course Never heard of Simnett guitars so fair play for going for something different.
24. Different. Whether it is better depends on taste. Some people like the Peavey sound. Whether it is louder depends on the sensitivty of the cabs and the watts delivered into the load of the cabs. Sensitivity is more important. Why dont you read the stuff on the basschat wiki that explains all this.
