1.
I havent been there for ages. Do they still pay £90 for a mains lead over there
Only the cheap ones.
2.
Unfortunately that's the realities of the commercial world. Next you'll be wanting to buy directly for Fender, Gibson, EBMM, Warwick, Ampeg, Ashdown, EBS, Boss, Electro Harmonix, Line 6, etc., etc. If you could then their overheads would be so great that the prices would go up dramatically to cover the costs and you would save nothing. A small company like Schroeder can probably afford to do it at the moment but once they get larger and have a dealer network it will it will certainly stop.
Most manufacturers only have half a dozen customers - the US, European, Asian etc distributors. Therefore they dont need lots of staff to handle the sales that are all big sales. If you sell direct a small customer base you will need a few more people, maybe an office, so it costs a little more but you cut the retailer and distributor out so you can cope. I dont know how many cabs and amps epifani make a year but its surely in the tens of thousands. If these were all sold direct they would have tens of thousands of direct customers and would need a big office block full of people to do the sales admin, returns, warranties etc. The cost of which gets added to the price of course.
3.
I was wondering if putting rubber feet on the cab made a difference. Have i decoupled the cab from the floor by doing this.
Have you seen all the fuss in domestic hi-fi over speaker stands, spikes, isolation feet etc. Its a minefield!
4. Out of 800 BC users I bet we are the only two with a GB Fretless.
5. Nice bass - too many strings for me mind. Tried one of Bernie's 6 stings and found it very difficult to fret the bottom string. This one was extra wide at the customers request. Stick the pic's in here or here
6. Tommy Shannon was also Jonny Winters bass player - two great gigs.
7. If you want a Jazz with nordstrand J's and Audure preamp I am sure Bernie Goodfellow, Jon Shuker, Martin Peterson or Chris May will be happy to buld it for you.
8. As I use half rounds I change them about once a year whether they need it or not. even when I was gigging lots I still only changed them once a year. When I was using rounds some of them went [Fly a Kite] after the first gig. As for Elixirs, as they are coated with Gore-Tex I would recommend washing them with something like Nikwax, designed for washing Gore-Tex clothes.
9. I'm really glad I got my EBS Neo 2x12 from the bloke down the road who changed a duff speaker "just like that". I would think long and hard before I bought Epifani.
10. Hi Mods - any chance of getting this or this pinned so we dont have multiple random threads - seeing as weve got two already?
11. Hi Mods - any chance of getting this pinned so we dont have to keep bumping it?
12.
there is no replacement for displacement.
Reminds me of Carrol Shelby - there's no substitute for cubic inches The thing is with 2 cabs you have the option to use one or both. If you get one big cab you have to use it. And you aint gonna carry a 6x10 in one hand!
13. In fairness Neils own basses look a lot better than this!
14. see here
15. +1 for the DI - I dont use it myself but lots do. Less convinced about the x-over, not a lot of people run true bi-amp.
16. See here for lots more on strings.
17. There was a long and informative thread on bass talk - shame you did not ask before it was deleted.
18. Most of the UK's custom builders "own" pickups are Kent Armstrong - same as their "own" pre-amps are John East.
19. Jaco-tastic. I use status hotwire half rounds on mine.
20. I think the headstock size is an artefact of the angle the photos were taken - its a common feature of photos that are taken from above. Still don't mean it's a 66 mind. The bit I like is it looks brand new - possible if its been in a case under someones bed for 40 years, but there is no hard case! No bids - I wonder why.
21. Depends how you define best. I used mine with 2 x 4 ohm 210's to get full beans.
22. My GB's. I had a 1980 Ibanez Musician fretless that I loved playing but it just got too heavy for my poor old back so I paid a visit to Bernie Goodfellow GB Guitars who is quite local and said I wanted a four string fretless Spitfire with a neck exactly the same as the Ibanez. Game on. I dont dig basses that want to be furniture so fancy woods were out, although Bernie could not resist using a fancy bit of maple for the neck. Thought long and hard about the colour but in the end decided it had to be black with chrome, standard Spitfire build (GB Pups, GB Active, Schaller 200 Bridge and Hipshot Ultralights). Its made from swamp ash so is nice and light. I did consider a Status Retro in black but I wanted an in-between neck and Status only did P or J. One extra was some rather fetching blue LED's as playing fretless on a blacked out stage can be a bitch. Like most builders Bernie has a formula and models that he likes to use as a starting point (the Rumour shape is inspired by the silhouette of a naked woman with a comfortable bottom sitting down). Of course you can vary considerably from the standard build but it can cost more and if it is particularly time consuming he might decide not to take it on because it means making all the other customers wait longer for their babies. But I wanted something different with frets so I had a Spitfire based P bass made. Swamp Ash again in fiesta red with a snot green plate. 69 P Pup, EBS Active, Hipshot Ultra and Hipshot Model A strung through. Looks and sounds very different.
23. I used a T-Max for years and it was a very good amp. Unlike most hybrid amps it had a pre and post volume control on the valve channel so you could get just the right amount of drive. Peavey also have a solid reputation for reliability unlike Ampeg.
