1. This bass has my three favourite things... tobacco sunburst, chunky bridge, no fretboard markers. Good job I'm not after a new bass. Some lucky person should snap that up.
2. All of the above is good advice. Whatever the band's image you should be able to find stuff from high street, markets, charity shops.
3. two reasons I tend to cull a lot of my instruments: 1 - I don't like them to be unused 2 - the amount of space taken up by the cases. I was rather amazed at the bombproof case my latest MIA Fender Jazz came... seemed much bigger than the (shaped) P bass case from a few years ago, albeit great if you chuck in the back of a van. I much prefer the Warwick gigbag my Thumb lives in... but I don't chuck it in a van. Most bulky case (as the guy posting above) was my baritone sax, which really was big enough to hide a body in, and weighed a ton. I mostly play flute now... fantastic... the case will almost fit in my pocket.
4. Despite what I said earlier, may be ok for rehearsals. Pretty sure you will need some sort of mixer, though. I'm fairly sure you could get some tiddly cheap thing for next to nothing.
5. Can't comment on the Gotohs, but I once got a Status fretless neck for a P bass and decided to get the Hipshots to keep it all light and well balanced. No complaints at all... would use them again if I had to.
6. Had a pair of these once... an active and a passive. Not even loud enough for decent monitoring, wouldn't cut it as a PA imo.
7. Always hated the "bent bit of steel" bridges. That is superb.
8. If I remember correctly, the third settings on the pickup toggle switches are single coil. Amazingly versatile basses and not too heavy at all.
9. Very very nice. I love the lack of position markers on the front of the fretboard.
10. I think you may get a very similar sound by using a kazoo... A much maligned instrument. If that doesn't have the right visual impact, get someone to crochet a bagpipe cushion out of spare bits of wool and stuff the kazoo inside. Or... I believe you can get the chanter on its own, pipers use them for practice and it will be cheaper and easier than the full monty.
11. Don't see anything wrong with a bit of vanity anyway. Obviously there's a sliding scale from pride in your appearance up to outright narcissism. Wouldn't spend money on a reg plate, but if someone else wants to it doesn't bother me.
12. Just remembered another one... not sure how this will go down, but I had a very bad experience. I'd never join a band with electronic drums. I was in a band once... the drummer rehearsed with a proper drum set, then at the first gig turns up with a electronic kit. He has a tiny monitor and places it between the two of us, facing away from me. stage monitoring was really bad as well. Got my clues by watching him, but didn't stay for a second gig... don't think they ever played again after I left, they just sat in pubs and talked about gigging.
13. I've changed my name to BV54 OJD
14.
All my Warwicks are German made. So I believe mine probably are. I can't say for Rockbass Wicks
Can't answer that, but my first two fretless Warwicks were Rockbasses, and they had ebony boards... which was quite impressive.
15.
This.....the venue are restricting the sound so play the gig, get paid then move on 👍
+1 I'd be a bit bothered about not having my own amp for monitoring... I'd be tempted to take a practise amp and prop it up facing me... or in my case do the same with my 12" Markbass, which is only diddy. It would be nice to tell the venue to get stuffed, but it's the happy couple that would suffer.
16.
The other members wanting the band to be a big socialising/friends thing when all I want to do is play some music & then go home.
I could come up with all kinds of reasons, but this is at the heart of it.
17. I presume the frets on a Warwick are brass (All of my Warwicks have been fretless... so I'm not sure). So it would make sense to make the nut out of brass too... tonewise... or maybe have a zero fret.
18.
No horror stories though.
I'll pile in if anyone posts a horror story... I'm not starting it, though. 99.9% of the weddings and functions I've done have been fine.
19.
Well, if you're ever tempted to commission one yourself you're very well welcome to pop over to Chester and have a blast on mine beforehand.
Cheers for that!
20. I had a Zoot bass once. Very much like yours... same shape, same neck, but without the whizzy woods (just plain black). Still wondering why I ever sold it... I allowed myself to be persuaded by the retro 60's band I was in at the time because it didn't fit the image. Should have ditched the band rather than the bass (I ditched the band anyway). I suspect this bass will be awesome... don't know how you can live with yourself while waiting. Enjoy it when you get it!
21. Oo-er... split decision. I'll have to think about that one. If I think about it as "I want to spend some money on some bling" then I may well go for it... not for a while yet, though. Cheers.
22. I've got one of these... absolutely fantastic bit of kit, and at a great price. If you haven't used EBS stuff before... it's totally bomb-proof. The guy is not paying me to write this!
23.
You should always pick songs for the audience. You won't be able to educate the audience, that's not what they come out for and not your job. Your job is to sell alcohol and entertain. Blue
100% agree... whether you're in the US or UK. I've played loads of stuff that I wouldn't listen to and still enjoyed playing it.
24. The plastic ones break easily, but I learned my lesson after I broke the first one... take the E and G strings off first when you replace them and put them on last... then the nut doesn't tip and break the little plastic nobblers at the sides. So... I'll spend me £50 on a Spyder hard case for my Gordon-Smith then!
25.
Are you noticing any difference between open strings and fretted notes ?
No
