  1. Just ordered a Darkglass Alpha·Omicron (plus other bits) from Thomann, very excited for it (them) to arrive! :D

  2. Surely this is a topic for Trollychat?
  3. Next month: "7 reasons you can't play metal on a strat" "How to convince yourself that watching YouTube tutorials all day is improving your playing" "$150 vs $5000 Les Paul: why only a true Gibson will do for your bedroom rig" "Dave Grohl explains why cocaine was the best thing to ever happen to him" "A look at the barre chord, and why you might as well ignore all other shapes" "Reliability is over rated - a run down of our favourite valve amps"
  4. We Are The Champions immediately springs to mind. I like most Queen stuff, but that song in particular makes me cringe like no other. I don't think I could ever stomach rehearsing or playing it
  5. For me it's Justin Chancellor of Tool, the man writes some breathtaking stuff as part of the band. Showed me that bass doesn't just have to be supportive, it can be just as much an integral and leading part of the song as any other instrument. Although, I can't mention inspirations without Chris Wolstenholme of Muse. Not as much a songwriter (although he has contributed some great stuff to the band), but his tone is what got me into bass in the first place.
  6. I can't blame them, the line between 32 and 33 is like an impassable barrier when it come to music. Suddenly your beard and expensive gear and opinions on 90s punk all shrivel and fall away, leaving an old fogey too uncool to be in a band with
  7. After years of searching, I might have found the one... " Hello. Join my band ?. You must have expensive gear and a huge van for my ego. Be between the ages of 18 and 32.and drink no alcohol before driving me to gigs.as I'll be doing all the drinking. Beards only and no f***king acoustics. Hoping to tour Indonesia in the summer so I can get my hands on a decent squier tele. Anyone ? Ps. Anyone who thinks Green Day is punk can f*ck Off. Thanking you " The perfect attitude, good work ethic, responsible when having fun, insightful opinions on music... Does it get much better??
  8. $300 for a rumble pack?? I guess if you're committed to no-amp rigs, but still that's kinda a lot to spend on it
  9. I've got the album, and I really like it overall. Lots of heavy stuff, not in a heavy rock/metal way, but more a heavy-on-the-mind sort of thing. Plus Maynard does some really amazing stuff with his voice (he did all the vocals on this ones. Yes, all of them, even the ones that sound feminine!)
  10. Just started getting into jazz fusion stuff, so currently listening to a mix of Wayne Krantz, Gateway, Pat Metheny Group, Brand X, stuff like that
  11. Just had a read through the RemArc terms and cons and it says that they can't be used to make a profit without permission/a fee (I assume this covers song / album records) Still very interesting though, there's probably some very cool stuff there if you dig around
  12. Surely that's more a "jazzy guitarist" than a "funky guitarist"?
  13. I've been using Tuxguitar for a while, and flirted with GP7 but it just didn't click. Notion 6 sounds interesting, will have to check it out
  14. I agree, which is precisely why I'm paying close attention to all these horror stories. Hopefully I'll pick up on a few of the alarm bells that experience gives
  15. Owning both a secondhand Ibanez and Yamaha, I completely agree with this. If you manage to find a Yammy TRB within your budget then I'd 100% recommend buying it, same goes for an Ibanez BTB (or SR if that's more your thing). Otherwise, I have heard good things about the Harley Benton basses, plus if you get one from Thomann they have a great returns policy if you end up not keeping it
  16. Gosh darn, I placed an order with them a couple of weeks (!) ago and I'm sure you can guess whether I've received it yet. Wish I'd seen this thread first Although interestingly I sent them an email 2 days ago and got a reply the next day, the guy claims he "remembers the order" and that he would have expected the strings to have arrived by now (perhaps if I'd order from a different site, they would have!). He's mentioned replacements if the order doesn't arrive soon, I'll keep you all posted
  17. I voted no, until Squire come out with a 6 string bass (other than the Bass VI, I dont really see that being any good tuned B - C). I've played some really nicely set up Squires, and while the general sound isn't particularly my cup of tea they don't sound bad by any stretch. But I couldn't perform a lot of what I write without a 6 string
  18. Here's waiting for a www.compchat.co.uk sometime soon
  19. I guess if you're using 3 or 4 instruments with wildly different outputs during a set and are too lazy to adjust the volume/gain on your amp? Or if you're a bassist who just has to play a shredding guitar solo mid-song, and changing the leads is just too slow
  20. Mine's probably Lateralus, lots of excellent bass work on there (not just the intro to Schism that everyone and their cat seems to learn )
  21. Similar kinda thing happened to me once. I had a jam with a guitarist and the bass (Cort 5 string) sounded nice, plenty of highs, not at all too thumpy. Not new string tone but close enough. Went home from uni the next day for chrimbo and took the bass with me, didn't play on it for a couple of days but when I did plug in it sounded completely dead, all the way up to the G string. Not sure if it was the change of room or if the sweat had just had time to wreck the strings.
  22. Is Tool well known enough to be included? Jambi has a ridiculous amount of variation, especially under the talkbox guitar solo, plus intermittent use of auto-wah on single chords within a line (an utter hand-foot coordination nightmare!) In slightly more classic territory, haven't tried it for a while but I remember 16 year old me getting confuzzled by Smoke On The Water - the bass does some pretty intricate stuff under the all too well known guitar riffs.
  23. Very interesting, although I'd suspect it'd serve a very similar role (for me, anyway) to my Two Notes Le Bass, which I adore the tone of. The added compressor is very nice, though I've never kept a compressor pedal on my board for lack of use. Will keep my eyes peeled for video review for this one
