  2. Gigging drummer for 40 years. heart trouble meant I had to give it up. Suffering from depression, and aged 57 I got a rubbish 2/2 foundation degree in popular music. Eventualy, after doing some private tutoring and stuff for a while, bored now,  I took up bass as a challenge and have been experimenting for some time. I started out with a heavily customised stag 24 fret 4 string (Seymour Duncan 1/4 pounders , grover tuners and decent strings etc.} and a Laney RB4 160 watt amp. , learned a few classic rock tunes  and did a couple of pub gigs with three like minded oldies, but I was forced to move out the area, and the band really wasn't that good it warranted travelling for. Living on my own and with no musical contacts I took a more serious approach and I now have Quicy Tolouse 6 string through neck active, with a mark bass little mark lll and a pair of Hartke 210 XL cabinets, and I am trying to teach myself to play Bach Cello parts with a view to teaming up with a flute player. Okay I always did have ambitions beyond my abilities but if you don't try you'll never know 🙂 All of this brings me to the point of my signing up to the forum., so I'll leave this and head over to my first attempt at a post.

      No instant gratification with his bass. The wait will make it all the sweeter.

  8. So glad I'm back with a Demeter amp again.  Such a wonderfully clear, warm tone.  Impossible to get a bad sound from it.

      I messed with the internal trim pot on my Demeter Preamp once. And then I forgot that I had. Not getting any volume at all for 10 minutes was a sad experience.

  9. Please may I have seven more follows on my (new) YouTube page so I can finally get past 100 subscribers?

    @DanVeallBassist

    This is my own page, which is rather empty as all of my gear reviews are hosted on the Guitar Interactive Magazine website and YouTube channel @GuitarInteractiveMag

    So, mine is a bit empty. I'm starting from the ground up and need your help :)❤️

      I was about to also admitting to shipping a lot of basses and then suddenly realised that I am a complete lightweight in this company.

  13. Just adjusted my double bass bridge down to where the strings are 5-8mm off the end of the fingerboard. It really brings out the growl, it's easier to get around, and it's a bit kinder on my hands given I don't get as much practice time as I'd like. But I feel like the old-school "real players dig in" guys will disapprove!

      I have my action higher than that, but that is because I find that a low action for me means that I run out of headroom if I pluck harder.

  14. So, the ever present question: Do I sell all these bits of kit that I don't actually use anymore, or keep them on the off chance that a band (job) might require them in the future. I could do with the cash frankly, but the value of the kit could mean that if I buy again in the future, I could end up paying more in the long run. Hmmmmmm

      I have come to the conclusion that the stuff we keep "in case" is 90% redundant. Whenever I do get called to do anything, as soon as I get jiggy with esoteric bits of kit I get a look from the producer or keys player that says "do what you do well and we will do all that fiddly stuff".

      But which 10% is not redundant?

  15. Is it not against the rules to post an item for sale on here asking for the buyer to send money through Paypal Friends & Family? If not, it should be!! I see at least 1 scammer get called out on Facebook per week and it's ALWAYS because the buyer sent payment through F&F.

      I got scammed on FB. The whinging when his account got frozen made the whole experience worth it.

      I am pretty sure I saw some EA 2x10 doobrie on a Facebook Bass for sale type page fairly recently. I cannot guarantee it ticks all your boxes and I cannot remember which group it was.

      That was me, I had it for a bit as a mid build evaluation and it is now back with the luthier. He is dealing with it between proper paying builds as it is a prototype kind of thing. It will be ready when it is ready.

  22. Hello, Neil Williams here, new to Basschat. Been playing since 1979, - early heroes Jim Lea of Slade, Jean Jacque Burnell of Stranglers, Suzi Quattro; then all manner of brilliant players - Stanley Clarke, Jaco,Victor Baily, Anthony Jackson, Abe Laboriel, James Jameson, Carol Kaye, Bootsy, Marcus Miller, Jack Bruce, Tony Levin, Chuck Rainey,Tal Wilkenfeld, Nathan East,  Neil Murray, Jimmy Bain, John Paul Jones,Tina Weymouth, Chris Squire, Les Claypool, Billy Sheehan, Jimmy Haslip, Danny Thompson, Mo Foster .... the list is an endless upward spiral, but when it ends, it ends with the god on earth that is, of course - GEDDY LEE.  Anyway, I play a '79 Precision, - I bought it in London in '81. I was after a Ricky 4001 a la Geddy, but the guy in the shop persuaded me to go for the Fender. He didn't have a  4001 in, so he had one sent over in a cab for me to try and compare. Good man, there's customer service innit. Anyway, - I've been using a Warwick CCL 250 combo for quite a while, and more recently a Trace Elliott GP7 with a slotted front, both with my little Aphex Bass Exciter/Preamp/DI Box thingy. They both sound great and are real work horses, but they're pretty weighty and I aint gettin any younger, so I've decided to take the plunge and go for a new Ashdown combo as replacement for them both - great sound, simple controls, loads of oomph and sooo light - its between the Original C210 300 Kickback, and the RM 500 T 210 Evo. The Warwick and Trace are up for sale, I'll put them up here first if anyone's interested. Any Ashdown users/ex users with any advice/thoughts. Would be most appreciated. Diolch/Thanks
