From my hard rockin perspective, Number of the Beast-Iron Maiden....the album that showed me the power of the dark side Pyromania-Def Leppard.....for me the perfect mix as they developed from a young raw hard rock band to the well oiled pop machine they became Misplaced Childhood-Marillion.......beautifully flowing concept album for people who missed out on them during the 70's...but this time with catchy bits too!!!! http://youtu.be/VZ5bS3_BCDs
Saw him at The Cutting Room in New York last May. Turned up mid-afternoon to pick up tickets (as we'd done them online from the UK) and they were loading in. (Corey Glover was the headliner.) Had a very long chat with dUg's tech guy and a guy from Tech21. I was expressing my love for Tech21 stuff and the dUg head came into the venue at which point I nearly jizzed. The guy from T21 was saying how expensive it was to configure heads for Europe and they just needed a minimum order before they'd even try and do it. Much as I'd love one, I believe I could probably emulate the tone for a lot less than £2,000! Shame!
Cool story!!! To be honest, as much as I love Dougs tone in Kings X I'm not sure it'd work for me, it's kind of his signature and although I muck about with a bddi which gets close, I don't use that sound in a band environment. Maybe if I were still a bit younger and in my originals band I'd sneak in a bit more of that vibe!!

Love Dug Pinnick! ( and all of Kings X!)

Fender Mexican (Standard) Jazz Basses... What's the overall opinion?
sykilz replied to RustInPeace90's topic in Bass Guitars
Got my MIM jazz a year or two back, wanted to get the Squier VM, but to me the neck on the Mex felt much better, ( in fact it's the nicest neck, for me, I've ever owned /played), and the finish was a bit better too, can't fault it at all. The pickups are a bit weaker than my Yamaha BB, but the BBs are notoriously hot, so no big surprise, they sound o.k to me. Balances perfectly, nice weight, great workhorse instrument IMO, got mine in a promotional weekend at PMT, good deal. -
Gigging bassists... how many basses do you own?
sykilz replied to The-Ox's topic in General Discussion
Two.....Yamaha BB414 for actual gigging, a Mex Fender Jazz for noodling at home. Seriously, for a pub rock cover band, what more do you need...???!!!!! Oh, and my old Washburn 5 string that I used for years exclusively in my originals metal band, got new in 1991, barely a mark on it....mojo indeed!!! -
Hair metal , or death metal?

My generation ( I'm 45 😫) may recognise the name Mark King ( Level 42) as he did a lot of t.v back in the mid eighties, and was the one well known bass player from the era. Doubt they'd recognise him in a photo though...!!

Got Steve Vai's plectrum flicked into crowd at the gig filmed for Live at the Astoria dvd. Saw him throw it and just put my hand in the air and it hit me straight in the palm, great shot as well as a great axe player...!!!!

TC Electronic BH250 , which has the toneprint facility so you can play around with different effects at no cost to see what wotks best.....? I don't have one so can't offer more advice, but looks like it would fit the bill.

I briefly had one on a Warwick Corvette, and it was a hell of a faf to tune, once I managed to get the E in tune, the D would drift out, and vice versa. Realised I'd never trust it and have to keep checking it, and if you're doing that, you may as well just manually drop tune. Or could be I'm a twat. Others seem to love them!

Mine did the flashing light thing when left uncovered in the freezing cold car overnight and getting a lot of condensation damp inside when taken into a hot sweaty pub, had to wait it out for about twenty minutes but eventually came back to life in time for gig. Lesson learned though!

The ' proper' singing in Bowies 'Sound and Vision' comes in at 1.29 in a 3.00 song, although there's a bit of sighing going on before then. For a pop song it seems like forever though!,

On the ipad it gives you a little box under the title box that says price, but when i put in £39 it said enter price, so put in 39....( without the "£" sign) and it accepted that, maybe that?

Sorry for the thread revival, but I have a couple of spare tickets for the Satch Southend gig if anyone fancies them? Posted in the for sale section too.....

Me and a mate saw Steve Harris of Iron Maiden ,oh, must have been 20 years ago, in Lakeside shopping centre with the Mrs having a sandwich, and we asked him to sign a hastily purchased Maiden calendar and I told him his style had massively influenced me ( he was basically my music idol!) and he was kind enough to grin and say " nice one " before diving back into his lunch!

We played at a Dagenham pub a few months back, and a local lad was on the underbill at a boxing match at the 02 which was live on Sky tv, so we played ( by prior arrangement) until he came on, stopped and had our break while the fight happened, then carried on after. Worked out o.k , even though he lost after looking like he was going to win for the first 8 rounds.... We went with the...Oh bad luck mate, lets all drown our sorrows....approach!

Did you try angling the pickups a bit, i.e having the E lower than the A, which angles the pickup relative to the strings? Also, you can have one of the saddle screws a bit lower than the other, thus moving the string either direction a small amount, I find this is usually enough. To be honest, never noticed any audible difference whether the string goes straight over the poles or not! Bizarrely, when I got the jazz the choice was between it and a P identical to yours, I just preferred the jazz neck and it was slightly nicer balanced. My first ever bass, back in '85 was a Squier P in white and maple!!!

Last year I got your new guitars cousin.... Also from PMT, also a MIM. Great bass.

Always have something going on, mostly background radio music, but due to several reasons my rock covers band has been on a couple of months break, and I've really got back into actually listening to and (more importantly) ENJOYING music again. I'm dreading starting gigging again this weekend in case it's the band that was spoiling my enjoyment!!
