Ps i wish it had an input overload led to help set the input gain

A head arrived yesterday and had a great hour or two playing on my own. During band practise last night i seemed to spend ages getting the sound right. I've been using an rm800 recently, not for the 800W but cos i like the sound. I seeemed to fiddle with the katana a lot more to get it right. Might not have helped that the android app thought i had a Bluetooth connection but it didn't actually change the amp settings. I'll definitely keep it and continue to fiddle but not sure I'll gig with it for a while. Regarding needing footswitches to get all the patches that's a real pain, i often play crowded pub stages with not much space for my own feet let alone a foot pedal. Regarding volume, no probs at all would certainly do a pub gig with 4ohm cabs. Regarding list of fx there seems to be 2 differt menues one a lot more comprehensive than the other. A bit confusing. Early days and good fun at home for sure. I hope to get confidence for gigs as i like a hpf compressor and a bit of drive in one box. Suspect I'll end up using it on panel mode mostly.

With you on the big screen but that maybe due shaky hands and old eyes!

I go for a straight ethernet connection to an old laptop that i don't use for anything else. Had too many near misses with the wifi, though quite get if you're using a tablet it's unavoidable. Really recommend spending time playing with it before gigging. I've got caught out a few times getting a setting wrong setting up for sound checks. There's a lot of pressure at that point in the proceedings. Having said all that I'd deff go for the xr18 for all the reasons given. Thomann do a nice custom flight case for them which I'd recommend.

Fender replacement necks - any alternatives?
Jo.gwillim replied to DF Shortscale's topic in Bass Guitars
I have a vox humana fretless jazz neck. It plays really well. From the Netherlands so there's post brexit duties to pay I'm sure unless you buy it over there and stuff it down your trouser leg. -
I've had a similar experience. Playing in a busy covers band everything felt just right when i switched my P to flats. The same bass in the more acoustic band i play with needed so much eq tweaking i switched to a jazz with rounds, all happy again. I'm sure either bass would do either job but it's much easier if the bass (and the strings of course) just slot in.

Equipment failures - always the worst time!

Bet that came to a sticky end -
That is such a good joke!

The only thing that's let me down gigging is loose cable screws in speakon connectors. Checked all my speaker leads afterwards, lots of loose screws. Worth a quarterly check. I usually put 2 leads from the amp to the cab now. Non gigging faults have been gk legacy 800 and bergantino forte hp. Both ice power module faults 😕 -
Pat metheny's amazing too. Yes jaco is at his best playing with Joni. Some bassists make me think maybe i could do that if I practised hard. Jaco makes me think no way could i ever. Totally awe inspiring. I remeber walking into our local record shop about 30 years ago. Refuge of the roads was playing, i instantly burst into tears.

I do belive that they still enduro, though my old knees would greatly protest! A small thought experiment 2 magnets a small vertical slug of alnico the size of a pole piece and a girt slab of alnico the size of a tombstone. Put a field strenght meter right up against them both and they might both read the same. Now move the meter probe 5mm to the right on the first one. I think the field would be much less. Move the probe 5mm to the right on the second and i doubt if you'd see any difference. It's the string changing the field that produces a signal. If the string is moving into a weaker part of the field the signal will be different. Now i admit that ceramic pickups often have pole pieces which will change the picture yet again. One rainy day i might investigate further!
-
Totally agree but it must be determined by the shape of the magnet which is quite different for ceramic and alnico.
-
Sorry, i must admit i skim reading all the comments. Yes of course you are right. The main thrust of what i saying was the effect that magnet shape has on the shape of the magnetic field and in turn the effect that had on the sound quality. Especially in terms of harmonic content and perhaps sustain.
-
How about the shape of the magnetic field? As the string moves the field strength changes. This change in field strength is what's picked up by the coil and turned into a voltage. As the string moves closer/father away from a magnet the field from magnet is going to vary, so the output from the coil will vary. As ceramic and alloy magnets have very different shapes i would expect the way the field strenth changes in the area of the string vibration to be quite different. I could imagine this would affect the output waveform considerably.

Yep, I get that, i didn't want to buy another big thing that I'd only use occasionally. Power pack with inverter, small bass amp and barefaced midget works for me. I hope you find something that suits you, it must be a very common problem.

I'm more often than not playing through the house pa DI'd from my head with a BF cab as a monitor. Best stage sound deffo from 10inch cabs, but i can never be sure that the sound bod eq's to give a similar sound FOH. So still deciding for tonight's gig between the ten inch 210 or the 12 inch midget.

Always keen to natter to a bass chatter who's passin!

I learnt bass on a fretless, i gigged fearlessly with bad intonation for a few years , but then changed bands and went fretted when my new band mates winced. I love my fretless bass but have lost my gigging nerve. Would a ponytail help?

How was Your rehearsal last morning or night ?
Jo.gwillim replied to nilorius's topic in General Discussion
We've 2 more gigs to go before the band in its current form at least packs up. It's been ten great years, i think about 170 gigs, with time out for Covid. Last night we were so busy trying to nail a chrismas song for the gig tomorrow none of us stopped to realise it's the end of an era. Something else will take its place i know but i shall miss the old gang. We've had 4 big family deaths, cancers, niggles, more laughs on and off stage than i can possibly remeber for all of us it's been the band that has helped us through it all. What a privilege to be part of it. -

That old problem of missing notes when playing
Jo.gwillim replied to FretsOnFire's topic in General Discussion
Really hard isn't it. Concentrate too hard and i sound robotic. Not enough and make mistakes. Start enjoying the moment too much and forget where you are in the song, get too critical about the last mistake and play too safe. Very subtle balance that like you said nobody will really notice anyway! -
I did a gig on Friday in a big old Welsh tabernacle with a 210 with an rm800 on top. Had the chance to hear another band from the stalls they used my rig. It sounded lovely. The sound guy switched off the pa feed.
