Tube power stage vs Class-D (effective power)
Jo.gwillim replied to Paddy Morris's topic in Amps and Cabs
I just wonder, given you don't want a valve sound, and at low power you've got the class D sound you want, how much more class D power would do the trick. I'd be tempted to temporarily try slaving another amp/cab off your existing one just to see. Another thought is your 800W amp 800W at 4ohms and you actually have an 8ohm cab? I'm wondering if that is the case whether a 4ohm cab or 2x 8ohm cabs would give you more headroom? Good luck! -
Thomann have them for sale at £435 at the moment.

I'm always amazed at the caring thoughtful comments people make on bc. When I'm not learning songs to play with bands i just play whatever comes into my head. Often diliberately playing as badly as i can to see what happens. After 15 minutes of not going anywhere something new and interesting usually emerges. Something that often tells me how I'm feeling that day. Good brain therapy. I hope the chemo works.

The complication of all the presets hasn't really gone for me, so i use it as it came out of the box, i don't use effects much at all so one of effects I've turned into a 100hz bump control using the parametric eq fx. It really works well with the barefaced 12 inch cabs. Another thing i love is the bluetooth audio, with a super midget cab i can play along with band rehearsal recordings beamed from my phone. I've learned a lot about what eq settings work in the mix, something i never have time to do during rehearsals.

AMPEG B15 '64 ish mains transformer question .
Jo.gwillim replied to Chimike's topic in Repairs and Technical
I couldn't make out the pics very well but i suspect the thing is a NTC thermistor. They are used to limit the big surge current as the capacitors are charged at initial switch on. Leaving it out might mean the mains fuse blows on switch on. If this happens you could try anti surge fuse. PS they are designed to run hot, so don't panic! -
Thanks for that really good explanation. I think it would work for me, i wouldn't be adjusting monitor mixes mid song!
-
How do you set the monitor mixes. With the xr18 you get a different set of faders for each mix, guess you won't get that with the l20 unless they're motorised faders?
-
Ah, i havent tried my eub yet.
-
how do you eq on the fly, on the bass or on the panel? Doing it on the panel if you've set a preset what you see on the knobs isn't what you're actully getting. Now whilst gigging i would be far too confused!
-
Have got rather confused with all the presets and options available so have just decided to use it straight as it comes. An amp with a nice compressor, drive, 3 effects built in and a blooming on off switch on the front, not often seen these days! Got it for £350 from bass bros. Well pleased! First gig on Saturday.

Is there a modern bass head or combo with integrated reverb?
Jo.gwillim replied to Hellzero's topic in Amps and Cabs
I'd love to hear a comparison of the darkglass v boss -
The graphics eq is in the System settings section. Does that mean it's a global setting for all presets?
-
Too true but the foh will lose the fx eq etc. Fingers crossed a firmware upgrade will allow a bit more control of the hpf routing.

getting the hang of it now. dissappointed that the high pass filter knob affects the DI output AND the cabinet. I use the HPF to stop the stage boom but want the FOH sound bod to apply or not apply HPF to suit.

Thx for the tip.

Ps i wish it had an input overload led to help set the input gain

A head arrived yesterday and had a great hour or two playing on my own. During band practise last night i seemed to spend ages getting the sound right. I've been using an rm800 recently, not for the 800W but cos i like the sound. I seeemed to fiddle with the katana a lot more to get it right. Might not have helped that the android app thought i had a Bluetooth connection but it didn't actually change the amp settings. I'll definitely keep it and continue to fiddle but not sure I'll gig with it for a while. Regarding needing footswitches to get all the patches that's a real pain, i often play crowded pub stages with not much space for my own feet let alone a foot pedal. Regarding volume, no probs at all would certainly do a pub gig with 4ohm cabs. Regarding list of fx there seems to be 2 differt menues one a lot more comprehensive than the other. A bit confusing. Early days and good fun at home for sure. I hope to get confidence for gigs as i like a hpf compressor and a bit of drive in one box. Suspect I'll end up using it on panel mode mostly.

With you on the big screen but that maybe due shaky hands and old eyes!

I go for a straight ethernet connection to an old laptop that i don't use for anything else. Had too many near misses with the wifi, though quite get if you're using a tablet it's unavoidable. Really recommend spending time playing with it before gigging. I've got caught out a few times getting a setting wrong setting up for sound checks. There's a lot of pressure at that point in the proceedings. Having said all that I'd deff go for the xr18 for all the reasons given. Thomann do a nice custom flight case for them which I'd recommend.

Fender replacement necks - any alternatives?
Jo.gwillim replied to DF Shortscale's topic in Bass Guitars
I have a vox humana fretless jazz neck. It plays really well. From the Netherlands so there's post brexit duties to pay I'm sure unless you buy it over there and stuff it down your trouser leg. -
I've had a similar experience. Playing in a busy covers band everything felt just right when i switched my P to flats. The same bass in the more acoustic band i play with needed so much eq tweaking i switched to a jazz with rounds, all happy again. I'm sure either bass would do either job but it's much easier if the bass (and the strings of course) just slot in.

Equipment failures - always the worst time!

Bet that came to a sticky end
