1. A couple of places worth looking at http://epiphonewiki.com/index.php?title=Main_Page and http://www.epiphone.com/History.aspx I think I've seen the information you're after on one but can't remember exactly - I'll update if I find it
  2. I finished my first bash at one of these on the cheap as follows: a couple of coats of Colron staining wax, a couple more coats of Lord Sheraton's Beeswax, and a polish with Gibson guitar polish The results are here http://basschat.co.uk/topic/43330-first-time-build/page
  3.
Hand sanded? Bleeding hell!! Truckstop

lol yea took me about 3-4 hours!
Respect - took me about 3-4 weeks to hand sand the body I had
  4.
From what I remember. . . . The body was drawn up by Peter, Explorer shape and sized to keep everything in scale, so it doesn't match up exactly with any other Explorer shaped bass. It had a raised centre section, as per a Thunderbird, used Thunderbird electrics and bridge and of course the P neck and tuners. From memory, the body was made from Mahogany. There are various makers around the world "Who" have done this before, many times, so it will be interesting to see how the project moves forward. Good luck. Cheers.
Thanks again, those who have carried out this build before would probably be best averting their eyes once this is under way
  5.
Surely an Explorer-bird would be a cross between a Thunderbird and an Explorer, whereas what you are planning to make is a cross between an Explorer and a Fender... ...Fexplorer? ...Expender?
It appears in the Bass Culture book as a Fender Explorer-Bird (Fender neck\Explorer body\Thunderbird pickups and hardware) - I'm not going to get too hung up on the etymology though.
  6.
Mmmm, Interesting. . . . . .
I thought you might be interested, I nearly dropped you a PM with a request for info seeing how you'd met the builder of the original. Thanks to everyone for the supportive comments by the way. Spec wise, I've not quite made my mind up yet whether or not to go for a close aesthetic copy or a 'homage'. I'm currently inclined towards the former. Having had a closer look at the bass in the Bass Culture book this morning a couple of things come to mind: Hardware, looks like earlier Thunderbird electrics and bridge - not sure how I'll replicate this, originals will be out of budget Body, not sure what type of Explorer body was used, it looks to me as if some remodelling of the lower horn had taken place to allow fret access but I've not completed the research yet
  7. This has all the makings of a disaster - you have been warned. I'm about to embark on Project No. 2, this will be an attempt at the Entwistle Fender Explorer-Bird as seen on the Who Are You video (see photo) Could be a long haul this one

    SOLD

The stuff of teenage dreams this one. I used to stand outside Sounds Great gawping at a white one of these when I was a lad.
  10.
That was a wonderful bass which I sold because it didn't fit the vibe of my then-punk band. I'd have it back in a heartbeat too, now
Yup, between us we should have kept that one in the fold
  11. It always pains me to think about these three: Alembic Spoiler, bought off Clarky but in the end I had to sell. Many thanks to George Osborne for that one, never mind I suppose my gold-plated pension will let me buy a new one. Prosebass Humbucker Fretless, inexcusably sold - still no idea why Beedsters '73 Telecaster Restoration Project, no pictures for this one. Sold in a moment of financial panic after buying a new amp
  12.
Slaughter and The Dogs - Where have all the bootboys gone?
Blimey, I'd forgotten about Slaughter, their live album was 'the' album to have round our way back in the day.

  14. My favourite thing on this part of the forum. I enjoyed every bit of that.
  15.
Great to hear you are up and gigging John after that ocular nastiness
Many thanks Clarky, thankfully the Arts Centre stage is big enough to accommodate a (temporarily) one-eyed bass player and his blundering
  16. This month's Altar Club features The Intercepteurs on the bill. Good line up for this one including the following: Karl Phillips And The Midnight Ramblers [i]"With a critically acclaimed album under their belt, Karl Phillips and the Midnight Ramblers produce their crossover sound, where dubstep, hip-hop and rock meet. 17.
Did you know Bag End is a literal translation of the French 'cul de sac'? Did you care?
I didn't and I do. I feel slightly better for knowing that now, cheers.
  18.
I could have put money on the main contributors to this thread... I've only got Barrie to chip in and I'll have the 'full house' that I predicted!
Oddly enough the two, possibly three, basses that I'd buy back again were all purchased off the two 'main contributors' here. Mrs Deaver has just chipped in to say why don't we organise it like an art club where you swap the paintings around every so often.
  19. When I hear something I've recorded and think that it sounds like a proper bass player rather than me. When I get to the end of a gig and get that rush from having got through it and done a good job. When a new song comes together properly for the first time.
  20.
Are you allowed to put a disclaimer in the ad to not sell it if it doesnt make enough money? Truckstop
Yes, as long as you put it in very small writing
  21.
Deaver,That's not you, is it. You tricked me. grrrrrrrrr
It is (or was) me. Who did you think I was?
  22. Found this yesterday, bit dated but gives a clear idea of my previous existence
  23. Funnily enough I think I know which one "the one" is. That said I'm quite happy fooling around with others until I decide finally to settle down. Any metaphorical resemblance to my own life is absolute.
  24. Nice that. I'm currently trying to play my "I've been such a brave boy recently" card with Mrs D so I can buy this, Doubt I'll have much luck, all the best with the sale
