1. What's the quality and finish of that jazz neck like? I'm jonesin after a P bass with a maple block inlay neck and thinking about it, one of these parted out could be a good cheap way of getting there. Do these necks fit fender/Squier bodies? Is the finish light enough that I could spray some vintage tint on?
2. I feel a bit dirty. Just played my first rehearsal with a P bass. Now, I play a Jazz usually, a nice 97 MIJ 75 reissue. I love it, have had it from new and it's never getting sold as I love it to bits - we've been through a lot together! I fitted a J Retro and a BadAss II and it's lovely. Now, a month back I spent the princely sum of 25 quid on a new "deko" Harley Benton short scale P bass. I set it up, and because I like tinkering, I put in some Entwistle PBX pickups. My lord. Eyes opened tonight. I'm converted. I get it. The P bass thump. Jeebus. Going to need to buy a real one now I think... Can't believe I've gone all these years thinking a P bass is a bit of a one trick pony. Maybe it is, but it's a GREAT trick...!
3.
A single inline pickup, like a jazz bass pickup, usually tends to be single coil. A split Precision pickup is a humbucker, albeit one wired in series rather than the more usual parallel. I think the split thing was also done to help emphasise the higher frequencies on the top two strings as well.
Oooh interesting. Ta. So it'd make no difference which way around the pickups fitted, but presumably one of them gets better tone from being slightly closer to the neck etc?
4. Hi all. Not managed to find a good explanation of this online. Why are P bass pickups split into 2 units as opposed to a single inline one? Are the two pieces location sensitive, I.e. could you swap them over without any impact to the sound? Cheers
5. It's an interesting idea but at that price? Similar to the "buttkicker" home AV piston drivers you can get. In fact I'd be tempted to try the buttkicker at a fraction of the price: http://www.buttkickergear.com/buttkicker_transducers_s/81.htm
6. As someone who plays a Fender jazz, has serious GAS and has read a lot of reviews on this (!) the general consensus I've read is a fast, jazz profile. Nice and slim. If Sire ever do a P bass, I'm grabbing one.
7. Must...resist... My first proper bass was an ash one of these and it was brilliant. Sustained for days and sounded great, I remember putting it through a huge PA with subs under the stage at Band on the Wall in Manchester and thinking I'd gone to heaven. Have a free bump.
8. I just get it from CPC or Maplin. Maplin's Van Damme instrument cable is very good and cheap, too: http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/van-damme-pro-grade-classic-xke-instrument-cable-black-priced-per-metre-n98jt
9. With drums, it's not just time to mic, it's bulk. If you have 3 bands on and 3 kits to fit on stage and then also 3x however many channels you're using on the kit, it takes an age and most small venues don't have the space. Probably not fair on drummers, but them's the breaks...
10. Holy thread revival. Google searching for the same thing for myself brought me here. Did you find one?
11. right-angled neutrik connectors and decent cable are as good as they get as far as I'm concerned. If you solder your own you know they're done right...
12. The CV for sale in the classifieds has a link to some tonerider information...
13. Hi all. Anyone know where I can get a neck pickup cover in chrome for a MIJ Jazz? Screw spacing on pick guard is 110mm rather than the usual size. I don't want to make any more holes! Cheers
14. Took me ages to realise the centre detent on my J retro's bass pot was not "flat" and that flat was actually all the way off...!
15. Depends. If it's better than mine out massively inconvenient to use my own, probably. If it's awful, I'll use mine. If I'm supporting not headlining and I want an early exit, I'll leave mine behind so I don't have to hang around till the end of the gig...
16. "I don't come round to your place of work and slap the sailor's c*cks out of your mouth, do I? Let me do my job"
17. <EDIT> Bingo! 30 seconds masking up with tape, sprinkle a little baking soda in, drop of superglue, sprinkle little more over the top. Wait 2 mins, remove tape and blow away excess and it's set like rock. Filed it flat and it's fixed! Legend, that's a great tip. Worked like a charm and I'm up and running with no more nasty buzzing!
18. Hi All, What's the best way to restore a little material to a (white plastic) nut if I've filed off a bit too much? Cheers
19. Cocktail stick and wood glue?
20. if you *really* want to keep it turned up, you could get a marshall powerbrake or similar. Think it'd be easier to use a single cab and lower the volume tho!
21. That's why it was a Deco. They accidentally fitted an extra string!
22. I'm in Florida next month. Musiciansfriend has the lovely lovely Squier CV 7s with those block inlays I'm so keen on for 260 dollars! Tempted if I can get them to ship to my apartment!
23. Fender MIM or a Squier Classic Vibe would be my suggestion.
