1. The Bohicas about a month a go at the Birmingham Institute. Very good young indie band. In an attempt to prove we're not past it me and a few friends try to see a live band in Brum or Coventry at least once a month. Who we go to see depends more on whoever happens to be playing on a date when we can all make it out rather than whether any of us have actually heard of the band. Still,we've seen some cracking young bands over the last few years.

3. My first bass was an Axe in around 1990. They used to advertise them on the back of Kerrang and Metal Hammer, I think the guitars went for £99 and the basses £125. It was fine to learn on, but, in hindsight it wasn't great build quality and the J pickup on mine managed to be really noisy (buzzing wise) and far too quiet at the same time, but I played my first gigs with it and it was perfectly usable.
4. The smartphone thing only deals with the problem of third parties reselling tickets for profit. Ticketmaster will still be able to keep back part of the ticket allocation for any given event to resell at a premium through one of its subsidiaries.
5. I enjoyed that, cheers.
6.
Damn that Banana song is catchy!
I'm pretty sure it's going to be my headsong for at least the rest of today. At least it's shunted out 'Entrance of the Gladiators' which I've been afflicted with all weekend.
7. I've seen a few Kaos Pad guitar demos along with some Matt Bellamy stuff and it seems a bit of a one trick pony. I can't really imagine how you'd use that trick on a bass unless you're in Royal Blood or some other band which required the bass to make brief bursts of unusual noises.
8. Might be useful if you suddenly need to dig an escape tunnel.
9.
It's an old topic, but remains a mystery to me. So many guys have written about how easy it is to be in more than one band. And I'm talking about being a member of a band not the independent that subs or deps as you guys call it. I think it can work with originals bands because over here originals bands don't gig very often so schedule conflicts are rare. But being in 2 busy cover bands. I say it can't work. What do you think? Blue
From what I've read from your previous posts the situation in the US is a bit different in that you've spoken about getting bookings on consecutive Fridays,Saturday's & Sunday's on what seems like almost a weekly basis. That's not really going to give you much of an opportunity to comit to other projects. In the UK that rarely happens for non touring bands, certainly not outside of the big cities. Also different band members tend to have different obligations and commitments. For me,personally, apart from a lack of demand for my skills,as long as I remember to feed the cat there's no reason why I couldn't be out gigging seven days a week with different bands (although I suspect eventually the day job would suffer), whereas my mates with young families feel guilty if they commit to more than one gig every couple of weeks.
10. There could also, perhaps, be a third category for instruments that have improved virtually beyond recognition for which I would nominate Squier as a shining example, although to be fair the entry level bass market as a whole is massively better than it was when I started playing 25 odd years ago.
11. Apparently it's based on a true story, although I've heard different versions of where the garment was lost.
12. In terms of current production models there really doesn't seem to be many manufacturers who offer a classic 8 string. I quite like the look of the old BC Rich Bitch 8 with the tuners at both ends, but it's a huge body shape and must weigh a ton. When I was browsing the Warmoth site the other day I did notice that they do an 8 string neck, so if you're a handy type you could put something together (maybe with a chambered or dinky body) that's more tailored to you, personally? Other than that, given the overwhelming positive feedback they've been getting here recently maybe try talking to Maruszczyk to see if it's something they might be able to do?
13. I kept expecting to see his knee caps go flying across the room or the floor to give out under the immense weight of that monster. Presumably he can't play it sitting down in case he severs a leg. Kudos to anyone who does the super extended range thing, but I find the prospect daunting, verging on downright intimidating.
14. Cheers Mykesbass, Interesting reading.
15.
This discussion kicked off on here a couple of months ago, and I worked out then that Spotify payments are actually quite good in comparison to radio plays per person listening to your track, The problem has arisen as artists are looking for streaming revenue to replace physical sales but there just isn't enough money being generated from streaming customers to make this happen. If Spotify put their prices up people would stop paying and go back to file swapping/sharing and then the writers and artists would get nothing.
Sorry, I didn't mean to retread old ground. I also think I probably got the title of the thread wrong. I was just a bit suprised that one of the biggest songs of the last few years had made so little for one it's co-writers via streaming. I think your points pretty much sum up the catch 22 that non-'name' musicians are finding themselves in with regards to streaming services.
16. I don't really know anything about the ins & outs of Spotify but presumably someone must have made some serious money. http://www.bbc.co.uk...om-178m-streams
17. I put on my raincoat to make it rain, and sure enough the skies opened up again. I dreamed of you as I walked to the shops, you were dancing with the wallies on Top of the Pops. Billy Bragg - Moving the Goalposts.
18. Harley Benton do an active 6 string progressive. I seem to recall Bilbo from this parish got a 7 string HB which he was pretty chuffed with. Other than that Thomann are doing the Ibanez GSR206B-WNF (catchy name) for £251.64 & I think I've seen Andertons selling them at a similar price. Its all pretty astonishing. When I started playing 25 odd years ago it was rare to see a six string this side of a grand.
19.
I've never been tempted to own one, but I've heard them on records and always thought.. meh and?.. so what?? 'Everybody' has them, and everyone sounds similar. Solid but 'safe' and not very inspiring.
On my best day I might be able to tell an active bass from a passive on a record, or whether its being played on the bridge or the neck pick up, but as to telling the actual brand of bass being used - no chance.
20.
Seconded, if we get one more person to agree we can pass the above as law, I think.....
Its been reviewed by both conservative & labour governments a couple of times, & they decided not to intervene for reasons unknown, which is slightly odd because when it comes to prestige sporting events the rules around ticket resales are much tighter.
21. I love Fenders. My only problem is that, like a lot of people I think the USA range is currently overpriced when you look at what else is available at that price point.. They're great instruments but I'm just not sure that they're £600-£1000 better than a made in Mexico.
22. Congratulations. That is a definite result.
23. They've just announced they're calling it a day, but Funeral for a Friend - Hours was a great album. Emo mainly passed me by but I saw them live about 10 years ago, bought the album & ended up loving it. Its somewhere between hair rock Bon Jovi & early Manic Street Preachers. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uX-kf3s_6DQ
24. Not going to be everybody's cup of tea, but I'm quite fond of By the time it finishes I've forgotten it's a novelty & been transported back to a dodgy club in the late 90s.
25. 1992 is mu favourite Carter album - I atill break it out for a listen every now & then. I'm not sure what qualifies as 'under rated' but my choices would be The Wedding Present 'Bizarro'. Maximo Park 'A Certain Trigger' Beastie Boys 'Ill Communication'.
