Rather good and not what I was expecting to be honest. My mum saw them live in Birmingham at around the same time and regards it as a horrendous experience. Not the Beatle's fault, it was the constant deafening screaming and the lack of bladder control from some audience members stinking the place out. She didn't hear a note they played, though she did enjoy Chubby Checker's supporting set.

I had a Hondo strat a few years ago that had pretty much the same headstock shape, though I realise that's not exactly bullet proof evidence.

This is a stunning example of why Build Diaries is one of my favourite corners on Basschat. I have no technical skills and nothing to contribute but, my goodness, I like watching you guys work. If I ever win the lottery (unlikely as I've not bought a ticket in years) the first thing I'd do is commission an Andyjr1515 build.

I think what I'm after in terms of tone is a bit more bass. I've been playing a lot of slap over the last year and rightly or wrongly I've got it in my head that a PJ might sound a bit more punchy than my current set up. I've played a couple of Yamaha BB's recently and they seem to have the sound I've been looking for, on the other hand they're heavy and not particularly aesthetically pleasing whereas the G&L is a very good looking bass and looks like it might be a bit lighter. Cheers again for everyone's advice and I will definitely try a few G&Ls but at the moment I'm swaying towards a Yamaha.

That's a shame, though I think I'll still try to have a go on one. If nothing else it's a much prettier guitar than the Yamaha's, and most other PJ's I've seen for that matter.

[/quote] Thanks, a weak bridge pickup might be a deal breaker, although I'm aware that on a PJ the bridge pickup is often quieter than the P. I'm hoping to find something that gives a similar scooped tone to the Jazz, but with a bit more oomph, if that makes sense.

I generally play jazzes with everything flat out so I don't really use the tone at the moment, so there's a good chance I wouldn't miss it, I've just never owned a bass without one. I'm going to have to go out and try one to see if we get on.

How does the lack of a tone control work out on the SB2? Do you miss it? I'm buying myself a PJ for Christmas and I'm currently thinking of a Yamaha BB424x or BB1024x but the SB2 Tribute has also grabbed my attention. I guess that theoretically you can probably vary the tone by adjusting the volume between neck and bridge pickups, but it seems like it might be a bit fiddly?

If half the stories about Rossi & Parfitt's rock 'n' roll lifestyles back in the day are true then he's done well to get this far and deserves to enjoy his retirement.

Both times I saw them live in the early 90s he was swapping between 4 & 5 string Warwicks & I seem to recall a precision on a couple of tracks. No idea what he used on the records though.

I was listening to this the other day -has to be one of the outstanding bass albums of the 90s. Personally I think Jamiroquai lost it over time as they stopped being a band where everyone contributed and slowly morphed into JK's personal ego trip.

I suppose it's how you approach it. I've seen a guitar duo doing covers with backing tracks who didn't really sound 'live' at all, apart from the vocals. On the other hand I saw Carter USM a few times when they were a duo playing to backing tracks and they had superb energy every time.

He does seem like a prime candidate for operation Yew Tree. Perhaps those involved don't want to be subject to the further glare of publicity that pressing charges would bring.

Jaco's like the first man on the moon, there can never be another. There's no doubt that Mohini is very, very special, but I doubt she can have that kind of impact on the musical world.

[/quote] I suspect most of us do this to one extant or another. I've never really understood the 'count in'. I just start when I'm supposed to start. No conscious effort to count the beats at all. As to 'this is in F# minor' - it may well be, but beyond knowing where F# (or is it G Flat?) is on the fretboard I just play stuff that fits with what everybody else is playing. As long as it's not noticeably discordant with what the others are doing I reckon I'm winning.
