1. I think strings are relevant to how low you can get your action. Also fingerboard radius plays a part. As does having a well cut nut / level frets / neck relief etc... But I digress.... I like my strings to be low tension, I use 45-105 Dunlop Super Bright Nickels. Mine are usually set to the Fender spec of 6/64" for the E/A and 5/64 for the D/G. I can get more like 5/64 for the E/A and 4/64 for the D/G on my 2015 American Elite Precision and maybe even a bit lower on my Yamaha Attitude ltd 3. 6/64 = 2.4mm 5/64 = 2.0mm 4/64 = 1.6mm
2. Did some recording for my band's new album over the weekend, took 4 Basses with me, my '78 precision, '75 Jazz, Yamaha Attitude LTD3 and my Fender American Elite Precision (pic below) Thought it best to have a 'pure' Jazz and Precision at hand, and then have the modern Basses as alternatives, should the need arise. We tried them all, and ended up using the Elite Precision for everything we did. The engineer loved it, described it as a great recording Bass. The only change necessary for different sounds / feels we wanted involved moving the pickup blend to various points between the P and J. Active always on with a little push on the mids, rolled off a little treble when the blend was fully on the P pickup. We put it through a valve pre and recorded it direct. Great punchy loveliness whatever we did. Don't get me wrong, I know that it obviously made the engineer's job easier to only be using the one Bass, but I'm strong minded enough to have insisted on using something else if I felt it was necessary, but I felt exactly the same as him, it just wasn't.. A Fun and rewarding weekend (if somewhat tiring), it's not every day (for me anyway) that I get to play and be surrounded by 'Bassness' for that long!
3. Right, no more bumps (after this one). Been up for 5 weeks and hasn't gone so I'll leave the post active but no more bumps for now... May put something else up and see how that does instead, hmmmm....
4.
Not an update as such as no purchase made, but I played a JV Squier P (actually a bitsa P with a JV neck) in Some Neck Guitars in Dublin yesterday. Yum. That neck is as close as I've felt to my friend's 60's P, maybe a fraction narrower. Certainly a nicer neck than my '08 USA P. Also had my first positive Ricky encounter... but I'd never EVER buy one, just to spite Mr. Ricky (wouldn't even waste my time looking up his actual name).
Just had a look at their website, that JV bitsa is veerrrryyy nice indeed!
5. Hmmmm, to withdraw or not to withdraw? that is very much the question! Got it out last night and had a noodle for 5 mins, really is a great bass!
6.
Sound tech are no longer representing EBS in the UK...
Not surprised by this, they made a right pigs ear of my EBS Billy Sheehan deluxe pedal. I had one of the early batches which had the issue of needing the clean volume at max to achieve unity (rather than unity at 12 o'clock). They had it for over 2 weeks and it came back exactly as it went, apart from having one of the nuts missing under one of the knobs. Knocked a couple of emails back and fore with Dan Veall (dood on here) and fixed it myself in about 10mins. I let EBS know about Sound Technology's failure to correct my pedal. I wonder how many other complaints they had... Worked out OK for me in the end, as after talking to EBS directly, they sent me a replacement pedal and a t-shirt. Winner.
7. Seems to me that Basses 'speak' to me through their neck dimensions. Anything too small and it just feels wrong to me. It's not just about nut width either, the only Jazz bass I've retained is my 1975. Obviously it has the 1.5" nut, but having the U shape neck makes it feel substantial in the hand, so it works for me. I've also got wider nut Basses, which have deep necks (Yamaha Attitudes), and shallower necks (Fender RW Precision). Seems as long as the neck has enough wood, then I'm happy.
8. My giddy aunt. Now, where’s my 75 Jazz Bass?!?
9.
P Bass?
For shame Kev, We'll have a good talk about the virtues of Precision Basses the next time we meet up for a deal.
10. Go on then, one more bump.
11. Saw one of these in the flesh in Bass Direct today. Stunning instrument.
12. Yep - I had a similar experience with them, excellent customer service.
13. Secured a TC RH750 today, so amps have been removed from possible trade / px options.
14. 'May possibly be the last bump, It doesn't seem to be getting a lot of love, so I may very well withdraw and keep it'..type of Bump!
15.
........Volume was really poor overload light flashing even with Gain and Drive at zero (7 o clock) a really distorted sound when pushing the amp for more output.......
I think this pretty much sums it up, serious issue with that amp.
16. I'm in, long time to wait though!
17. Come on folks, serious bit of kit here and it's available for a decent price! Someone also asked if I would courier this, which I can. Insured shipping UPS next day via interparcel came out at about £65.
18. Cheers Kev, I’m drawn to P bass widths these days as you know, it’s a beauty though!
19. What's the nut width on this particular one? 38.5mm?
20. Yep, you can probably get a graphtec nut for that which has pre-cut string slots. May still need a little fettling, which is best left to someone who's done it before.
21. Very Very nice..............
22. I also read on that facebook posts that they plan to make the modification available as a kit, like they have by selling dedicated 4/12ohm looms for those wishing to change their cabs impedance. They just need to work out how best to make it easily DIY'able for current two10 owners. I know I'll be interested when they do make it available in kit form.
23. Welcome Amy! There's more than a few South Wales folks on here, myself included, so you're in good company, enjoy!
