Yesterday I was in Ghost Town Sound studio in north London with The Royal Blues.
We were in to do 3 songs, but just to get the bass and drums down. Vox and guitar were booked for another session.
My plan was to use 2 basses to get a Nashville tic tac type sound, with one of my Shuker's and my Rob Allen Mouse. But as there was a bass in the studio and I was using public transport I just took the Mouse.
The studio bass was a nice looking vintage Fender P, pics at the bottom. There was a bit of adjustment using a 34", as my basses are either mid or short scale, but the problem was an action you could drive a bus under, and that is not the angle of the pic, the string alignment is out. It sounded great, but perhaps not suitable for the tic tac, I'll see how much of my doubling ends up in the mix.
The session did not start well. The drummer was having difficulty and it took 4 hours to get enough drums to be able to compile a full take. After a food break we did another song, which was recorded quite quick, then we went back to the first song and he nailed it.
After that the last song was done in plenty of time. I DI'd in to the desk, and my bass parts were done after a couple of run throughs.
Pub after. Good day 😁
btw I asked permission to post pics of the bass. It's what he used when he was in Echobelly.
