1.
Yeah i much prefer a good bassline than a bass solo/shred unless its a well composed solo. some bassists can go fast and still sound good though like john paul jones, flea, Jaco and Others
when I was teaching I would encourage learning a bit of slap, pop, and tap. I think a bit of flashy playing can aid development of technique, and be an introduction to new styles. Obviously application of technique is important, and should only be used where appropriate - such as to keep the gig moving if the guitarist breaks a srting/strap/lead etc, step forward the bassist and entertain But mainly because it can be fun.
 2.
Having said that, these days most popular music still seems to be played on 60 year old Fender and Ampeg designs, so what do I know!!
if it ain't broke, don't fix it!
 3. Here's a form, write the answer or score 1-10 What I purchased: MXR Bass DI Arrived in how many days: a couple - problem was at my end NOT his! Packaging score: 10/10 Quality score: 10/10

 5.
Welcome, 3 fingers all the way mate! Get some funny looks when you keep up with a galloping guitar whilst NOT using a pick! I can't do 16th notes your way though as they always sound like broken triplets due to the accent. For 16ths I go: r-m-i-m r-m-i-m Works better on the brain. That's forwards and backwards. Opens up a whole new world this eh? Yeah man, you can span them over 3 strings as well instead of 2 now! Eh? My ring finger is longer than my index...erm...what is normal? But it certainly whallops the strings if you ain't careful!
I can't do them your way! Leading from the -i- is something I need to work on. I've noticed that for straight forward pedalling i tend to use i-r-i-r- etc. For me it sounds more consistent, perhaps because my i and r, are closer in length?
 6.
What I did find rather strange was that only half a dozen of us made the effort to attend this so lets hope for a few more if Nick is good enough to invite us down again.
would love to have come, but being without a car at the moment didn't help
 7.
Sorry, no. Sold pending the usual. If the sale falls through i'll let you know
ok.
 8. I would probably go for the worlds most expensive bass. The $250,000 bass guitar, The Ritter Royal Flora Aurum, was built by Jens Ritter, a luthier, or stringed instrument maker, from Germany. This luxurious bass has a body carved from a rare, solid piece of maple while the nut is carved from 10,000-year-old mammoth ivory. The fingerboard is decorated with a floral inlay pattern made of 24-karat gold. There’s even a black diamond set in platinum decorating each leaf. The bridge, tuner buttons and knobs are cast in gold. The knobs hold an additional embellishment: they are both topped with brilliant-cut diamonds (3.3 carats).
 9.
A few years ago I was looking for a nice s/h Musicman Stingray 5. After a long time trawling the shops and ebay, I finally gave up. Then one day I happened to go into a local small shop and spotted the perfect one - 1997 vintage sunburst. maple board, played like a dream, absolute mint condition. I got a great deal on it. I couldn't believe it. Then about 12 months later, in a fit of total madness, I sold it to buy an orange Bongo 5, which I kept for 5 minutes. I've regretted this ever since. Why do we do these stupid things? Anyone else done this, or simply bought something because it looked a bit 'different'?
no, but I was once on a promise that I turned down because I had a rehearsal. I regret that now
 10. was unable to get a lift, so am at work instead. Maybe next year...
 11. I own the combo he used at the Albert Hall
 12. The Bitch on Bass - Rockbitch - played a fretless, and slapped it too! Amazing player.
 13. So great customer service, but poor quality control?
 14.
If you pass it on, please give me first dibs
2nd dibs if Cetera passes!
 15.
Just going to bump this to ask a quick question. If you play with three fingers, do you always run 4,3,2,4,3,2,4,3,2 etc. (or is that 3,2,1 - can never remember whether the thumb is counted on bass) or 4,3,2,3,4,3,2,3.4 etc.? I tend to use a kind of floating thumb technique for muting (in the sense that I'm trying ) Cheers.
as the OP r-m-i-r-m-i-r-m-i but i'm trying to i-m-r. I also play a lot of i-r as the main fingers.
 16. The Musicians Union has plenty of advice on this, and advice for members including an agreement with airlines for it's members.

 20.
Or possibly Paul Gray as in 'Eddie and the Hotrods', 'UFO' and 'The Damned' - not 100% sure about the damned, but he defintely toured with Captain Sensible's band. Awesome Gibson Thunderbird tone and WHAT A PLAYER!
yep, he was in the Damned between The Hotrods and UFO. He replaced Algy Ward after Machine Gun Etiquette. I think he does a column in BGM.
 21. Was it Eden who on their website had the amp that had been through a house fire? IIRC it was scorched and the nobs had melted away but it still worked fine.
 22. I don't think anyone would be posting on this thread if they didn't care. We all want a great Bass mag.
 23.
In an age of modern amps, cabs and bass electronics, why do some players just play with fingers?
because they can.
In an age of DAW and sequencers, why do you bother playing bass at all?
hasn't harmed Def Leppard.
It is a bit of an old chestnut, this. The answer is simple. "Bassists" who use plectrums are not true bassists - they are failed guitarist scum and it is the duty of every right-thinking real bassist to seek them out and smash their hands with a hammer, so they do not cheapen & degrade the purity & skill of proper bass playing with this abominable perversion of theirs. Praise The Lord. Easy, really. Jon.
what he said
