The Short Scale Bass Appreciation Society!
spyder replied to Baloney Balderdash's topic in Bass Guitars
I think I've seen the light and have been converted.... I've been very happy with the sound, playability and feel of my Musicman SR5. It has been my main bass for sometime now being used every weekend at church and while rehearsing for a new band. Now that I'm gigging again with 20 shows until the end of year I wanted to lighten the load on my back and maybe at the same time try a generally smaller bass. Sam a fellow Basschatter who lives near me has an Acinonyx bass strung with Labella low tension flats. He very kindly hosted me one afternoon while I had a go on his bass to see if I liked it. Well to say I was impressed was an understatement. The smile on my face was ear to ear. It is small, very light weight, packs a punch and the 17mm string spacing made it so easy to play. The next day I put an order in with the most excellent guys at Bass Direct and the next day arrived a fantastic Acinonyx bass in Lake Placid Blue. I've also ordered a set of Newtone Shorties strings to see if they suit the Acinonyx. Has anyone tried them? Two gigs, church and 2 rehearsals later I'm a convert. So much so the SR5 has gone to Bass Bros and I'm looking around for more shorties. 🤠 -
Added a small Becos compressor to gently smooth out my live sound. Works really well and great value at £150. Shout out to Joe's Pedals for a fantastic buying experience. https://joespedals.com/

I will echo the others who have commented in saying the sound was old school and it weighed a ton. It was almost impossible to pickup so I installed wheels to the 12" version which made it easier to transport. I think it lasted 2 gigs before I sold it on.

After many goes at building a big pedal board with lots of Juicy expensive effects I've finally given up and gone small, compact and functional. Bass - Caveman BP1 Compact - amp. GR Bass preamp in the effect loop of the BP1 compact and used for drive / fuzz only.

Depends on what kind of cheese 🧀

I've come to the conclusion that just not a pedal board freak so all effect pedals have gone and I've simplified everything to a small board. New pedal is the most excellent Caveman BP1 Compact.

I'm currently using a 1993 Musicman SR5 for all my gigs because I love the punchy Stingray sound. However the weigh at 4.75kg is starting to take its toll. I did own 2 Maruszczyk basses over 10 years ago and wasn't very impressed by their standard hardware. The bridge and tuners were made of cheese. The grub screws just fell apart. On visiting the Maruszczyk pages I started to configure a light weigh 32" scale chambered body Jake with light weight branded hardware. What do you think? Mermaid or Gold finish?

Just checked out Pinegrove. They look really fantastic and a great price too. The heavyweight strap in green relic looks like a winner. https://www.pinegroveleather.com/bass-guitar-straps/bs66-wide-bass-guitar-strap-green-relic-1
