1. I bought a Bass Collection about 25 years ago for £250. Around the same time i also bought a 1970s Fender Jazz for £400. Nowadays the Bass Collection would go for less than what it cost all those years ago and would be considered now a cheap bass while the Fender would probably be 5 times what it was bought for.
 2. This is a strange thread because it seems that the basses are being judged on what is considered cheap at the moment rather than their cost when they were sold sometimes many years ago. For example i was recently looking at prices of basses in 1990 and of the basses listed one was only worth 10% of one of the others. It's not only quality that has to be taken into consideration when deciding on 'cheap' basses but also fashion which is always so important.
 3.
Roberta Flack - guess which track?
Was it a cover version of this? http://youtu.be/WxY47jh9owA
 4.
The sound of Jazz Bass is known as before and after Jaco.
Well that's news to me.
 5.
This track has one of my fav Jazz Bass sounds, (lots of compression too!)
.......lots of George Clinton in that too.
 6.
Funny term, funk, probably like every musical label, means a lot of different things to different people. For me, the defining funk band is The Meters, and The New Mastersounds, while allegedly a Meters-inspired band, to me don't groove like the Meters at all.
You're probably right that Funk means different things to different people. It's probably an age thing but Funk to me is James Brown to George Clinton's Funkadelic/Parliament plus a lot in between. The Meters were definitely funky but i don't hear a lot of funk in The New Mastersounds. Craig Charles seems to have an endless supply of groups playing live on his programme on 6 Radio. Great musicians but 'devoid o' funk' as Mr Clinton might say. Perhaps there should be a new (if there isn't already) term, Smooth Funk. I just prefer my Funk a little rougher around the edges.
 7.
So have I, but was a long time ago and in a girls bedroom. Dont remember much.
I played one last year and it wasn't in a girls bedroom. I remember everything.
 8. How cool is Rick Laird in this classic Mahavishnu Orchestra clip? http://youtu.be/LcQKjffxIOY
 9.
Anyone see one or played one?
Yes i've played one. Do i get a prize?
 10.
It's gotta be funky, and the UK is producing some great funk / groove bands like the new master sounds
I've never heard of them until recently. When i hear that something is 'funky' i'm just glad i was around when there really were some funky bands around.
 11.
Can't for the life of me afford one mind
Don't worry, the way prices are going it won't be long.
 12.
I saw Billy with Mahavishnu back in the day - truly awesome!
I loved the combination of Cobham and Rick Laird in that first Mahavishnu Orchestra. I've never played with a group let alone drummer but solid as a rock Laird seemed to me to be a perfect foil for Cobham's style of playing.
 13.
I haven't read back through the whole thread (I could be here for some time) so apologies if posted before but I had to throw in some Dave Holland Quintet. Fantastic musicians and so tight. Love the DB solo intro on this one, the amazing inter-play between Billy Kilson on drums and Robin Eubanks on the T'bone and awesome soloing as ever from Chris Potter (tho I do prefer him on tenor). Mentioned everyone else so must mention Steve Nelson's vibes - not everyones cup of tea but adds a different dimension. Great stuff. Hope the link works!!
One the greats. I've seen Dave Holland a few times and was fortunate to see this line-up live.
 14.
Thanks for clearing that up, I was worrying that Miles Davis was only 4'10".
15. Mike Westbrook Orchestra with the great John Surman from 1974. If you can put up with the crackles this is an absolute gem with Surman on top form. http://youtu.be/oymM0UHiJYo
 16.
Lovely but I am tempted by the question 'how tall is Ron Carter?'.
Very tall. Let's have more of Ron............ http://youtu.be/Z53ytYBJ5m4
 17. This is great. Just great. This quintet is just what Miles Davis needed at that time. Herbie Hancock was 24, Tony Williams 18 and with Wayne Shorter trying to shake off the Coltrane disciple tag and it's all anchored by the great Ron Carter. Wow, what a Quintet!!!!!!! Oh, and Miles isn't bad either. http://youtu.be/K0PAhPjieVg
 18.
Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra. Just seen this doing the rounds (I have not heard this for ages) The playing goes without saying, but the arrangements are just fantastic.
To keep a four decade Monday night residency at the Village Vanguard you've got to be a good band and that were more than that. Great orchestra.
 19. If it was a Stingray instead of a Fender V i reckon this thread would be well over 300 posts by now.
 20.
I like U2 so this is quite a nice surprise. I have downloaded the album from the Mysterious Magic Cloud to my Mac, but I have just bought a fistful of CDs, so U2 will have to get in line behind Steve Earle, Bo Diddley, Robert Plant, Merle Travis, Bob Wills, and Freddy Fender [no relation].
I'd take 'I Love My Rancho Grande' over any U2 toon any day.
 21. I always buy furniture from shops with a big sign outside that says 'Closing Down Today.......Everything Must Go!!!!' I've found some good bargains and if if does fall apart you can always buy some more there the next week.
 22. These guys are from England and who gives a **** Ooh that takes me back a few years.
 23.
Simon bloody Cowell has a lot to do with it. He's trying to finish what Stock, Aitken and Waterman started - the removal of musical talent from fame.
That started a long time before any of those were in the music business.
