Now relisted at £575 - that isn't going to help you!

Rob is the very best kind of Basschatter. He invited me over to try his Moollon P-bass a year ago when it arrived from Korea, and A-B it against my JV. Then when he came to sell it just now he couldn't have been more obliging, putting it on hold until I could give it another whirl (with beer) and then bringing it into town to save me the journey out to his place again once I'd done the transfer. A top bloke and highly recommended for any gear dealings in future.

What ever happened to that Randy HOPE Taylor Moon bass.?
edpirie replied to bubinga5's topic in Bass Guitars
If it's the one from the inlay on Incognito's 100 degrees that you're thinking about... I owned it for a few months back in the early 2000's. Bought it from the Bass Gallery and sold it on through them. It didn't have the best low B, compared to a Ken Smith anyway. No idea where it is now so not much use to you I'm afraid. -
No need to introduce this - a great bit of kit which many on here will testify to if you search the forums. Probably the cleanest headphone amp around and a high quality DA convertor for recording into your DAW - I've been using this with Logic and it sounds awesome. This comes boxed with leads. I thought there might be an issue with the mini-USB at one point but it just needed crimping slightly - when I spoke to PJB about it they sent me a replacement miniUSB connector just in case which I'll put in the box. Price firm including shipping in the UK.

***SOLD*** This pair was taken out of a JV by The Gallery 3 months ago and been sat in their box since. Pole pieces look slightly tarnished which I hadn't noticed at the time so will probably rub out. A great set of Jazz pups, a bit darker than the standard Fralins and I almost didn't swap them out but had a hankering to try some EMGs which suit the stuff I'm doing at the moment. Were £150 new from Bass Direct. Price is firm and includes shipping in the UK.
I'd say the difference in gauge (FL=43-60-82-104 versus FS=45-65-85-105) belies a rather more significant difference in tension than one might expect.
Yes, agree with this. I had the FS and they had great old school thump but were too high tension for me. The FL are different enough to be significant, somewhere between the FS and TI flats which I love but are a bit too floppy for my way of playing when it comes to faster funk fingerstyle. Well worth a try.

I picked up a domestic JV Jazz in sea foam green the other day, and had been wanting to give the classic EMG J-set a go for a while to try something a bit more modern. So off to the Gallery who obliged with the wiring and I have to say I was underwhelmed to say the least. It wasn't sterile (which is the usual gripe), more just weak and thin which is the last thing I expected. Anyway I was about to take it back to get the stock pickups refitted when I remembered I had a set of TI flats knocking about. Put them on and it was a night and day difference - fat and punchy but with a nice bit of growl - just what I had been after. Plus they allowed the action to be a bit lower with a nice bit of fret buzz when you dig in. Just goes to show how much strings can make a difference - not a combo I would have thought of, but it's doing the trick so far.

If I make it, could bring a 3Leaf Enabler, but it's DI only, no O/D.

Yup, another thumbs up for Wunjo's from me. If you get to go in when it's relatively quiet they're super genuine guys to have a chat with about all things bass, and very easy about trying out basses with no pressure to buy.

I've been using my BigHead happily for a few months but the micro USB connector has suddenly become unreliable and glitches on and off. It wobbles around in the socket on the BigHead which I guess is breaking the connection. Have tried a couple of different cables, there's no dust or lint inside. Any ideas or similar experiences? Seems like a very poor compromise on an otherwise decent bit of kit.

Bottom end thump: difference between E and A strings
edpirie replied to ingmar808's topic in Bass Guitars
Closer than 20, 15, 25 and it's the last of these that's relevant to the OP's question -
Premium for ex-Pino? The Gallery had a Lakland of his last year up for £2,500 (I think it was) which was only about £200-300 more than it would have been with a nameless prior owner. Lovely bass it was too - best 5-er neck I've every tried.

No matter what the theory tells you, I've not found a passive bass through preamp to sound like an active bass. Probably a result of active basses using different pickups e.g. Sadowsky J sounds different to Fender J through Sadowsky pre. The only thing you can do is try a few out but I'd say if you want a more modern sound go for an active bass. That's a very amateur opinion but one born from a similar quest to yours.

Tentative Trade Feeler: Sadowsky MV4 (Sunburst/Tort)

Phil Jones BigHead is another option. Very clean headphone amp and it's added feature is a decent USB interface in case you get to do some recording. Also charges from USB which is pretty neat. I had the Pandora and it's great, but the BigHead will improve you because there's no colouration to playing - what you play is what you hear.

Rats, that looks absolutely beautiful, not helping my GAS for one of these! Congrats on a fine new bass
You'll have to pop over for a noodle when it arrives
Thanks for the offer, I'd love to, and if you decide you don't like it...

Ah, so you took the plunge – good on you! I’ve been getting pretty close myself but just don’t have the funds to hand at the moment. Nothing I’ve read suggests it will be anything other than a great buy, and I agree that this is the perfect colour combo.

Recommend me a London/Surrey based luthier for sorting out action
edpirie replied to mingsta's topic in Bass Guitars
You can't beat The Bass Gallery for all thing luthier including spot on set-ups and general trouble shooting. Beware though, you're liable to come out with at least one new bass as well. -
I don't think there's any way to shortcut trying them for yourself, and with the particular bass you have. I have a set on my JV Precision and they really suit it, but in a very particular way, emphasising all the woodiness - tons of character in the mid-range. Not as much thump as LaBellas though, and so I'm going to have to get another P-bass to string with them for more straight up funk/house type stuff.
