I use the voice memo app on my iPhone 4s, works perfectly. Taking a video with it picks up bass well too.
Bloody Hell, xilddx and discreet agreeing with me. I must kill myself before I wake up
Eh mate? Do I not agree with you often then? Most of those basses you dribble over in Basses For Sale are the exact ones I would have chosen. You have great taste in bass aesthetics.
+1. Tort should only be used - if at all - on sunburst or olympic white only. That is all.
I don't even like it on SB, but on OW or faded white they look gorgeous. Of course that must be brown tort, red tort looks like day-old placenta.
Hmmm...
That's the one! I find tort on black looks disgusting and I can't understand why so many people think it looks nice.

What groove is better from these magicians of bass?
xilddx replied to bubinga5's topic in General Discussion
Neither for me. I don't think either are grooving hard. I find the timing issues and the horrible bass tone in the Meshell vid too much to bear. Love Tamas' tone but the groove is not syncopated and I found it boring, but as he said it's just a sound clip. I know this is a well known vid, but if you want a wonderful thrilling groove and thrilling playing .. But it's also a nice tune with rich harmony, both the vids in the OP have neither. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pATcvr3zAhg -
I have to agree with you there very strongly…! To cross-reference with another thread, it certainly true that a lot of your tone is in your fingers but, when it comes down to it, a hell of a lot of it is down to EQ. Hence the huge difference in sound between Chris Squire and Mr Shakespeare…
If I played Tempus Fugit with RS's tone, the whole song would sound completely different. Same as if I played Pull Up To The Bumper with CS's tone. The bass tone affects the music quite substantially.
-
It all sounds the same anyway, in a mix, or out in the crowd.
I don't agree with that mate. Otherwise Chris Squire would sound the same as Robbie Shakespeare.
I'm happy with my gear! I've never really been too fussy with tonal minutiae, so the kit that I've got gets me the sounds I need. However, im not 100% happy with my technique, which in my opinion is much more important to what I sound like than where the tone stack on my amp has been set.
Brain > Body > Equipment > Music
Funnily enough, I have a completely different approach to you but I don't think that is really the issue here! I basically use the same tone for every occasion and would never use a pod or similar if I could help it. But the main thing is to have the basic tone in your head, know how to use the EQ to get there and not be too anal about it…
But the outcome is the same I imagine. Great tone that pleases you and works with the music. It's all in your bonce init.
People can get way too hung up on this subject…! There are hundreds of great bass tones out there and even more bad ones! Pick a good tone that you like and works with the music that you play, then get a decent amp that can deliver what you have in your head and learn how to EQ it. All you need then is a good playable bass that is compatible with that sound and forget about it and concentrate on playing…! The chances are that you will have to compromise many times (use different amps, etc.), but if you have a decent technique and know how to use the EQ on an amp, you should pretty much get a decent sound that is something close to the tone that you want…
Exactly.

One of a few old songs I wrote and recorded at home on a cassette 8 track at the turn of the century. This one is about being so completely in love with someone that you become a tabula rasa, a blank canvas - they can sculpt you in any way you want and you only realise when it's too late and you realise your brain is f***ing with you. It's a bit naive I suppose but I still like it. https://soundcloud.com/silddx/white-boy

I'm almost always delighted with my bass tones. I make them with my POD X3 while playing along to my bands' tracks on KRK headphones with no bass in the song mix. I set the level of the bass against the music like it is on the released version, and get on with eqing the sort of tone that pleases me and suits the style of music. Then I copy it to other patches and programme other versions of the tone with different effects and volume levels. They usually sound sh*t on their own so I have a few patches that please me if I'm just playing without any accompaniment. I don't use amps, and on a gig I'll probably change eq and level for the room or if the FoH engineer gives me any comments. Sometimes I will start all over again if I get excited about an idea or a sound I want, I change my idea of a pleasing tone quite often.

Tone is all in your attitude. It's what you are, not what you do.
MB1. I prefer my Straplocks Schaller ...Not a Dunlop type of guy.
Me too.

I like a bit of fret buzz too. It feels more lively. I set my bass up so that it's clean when I play gently, and buzzes a bit when I play hard. I've also been dialling in more dirt for my amplified sounds, which sounds very unpleasant on it's own, but when it's with the band it sounds so warm, whatever that means, but I've had three people tell me how warm my tone is recently, so it must mean something. Some buzz and dirt lends a bit of character I reckon.

Great stuff Debs, it's a really great recording!

What a fantastic programme! Thanks for posting it! -
Popular with me. I had the opportunity to look through some Zappa scores from the RNCM a couple of years ago. "Dog Breath Variations" - fascinating and scary stuff. God I miss Frank.
Yeah me too, it feel like the musical world has a massive void without him. Can't believe there are so few, if any, others who could fill that void.
Gold on black looks the biz.
It really does, and white/black/gold. Funny init, so many people love their spalted burl flame birdseye roasted-neck sh*t, but a sniff of gold hardware and they get all previous on yer.

I always assume the sort of musicians who post on Basschat would love Zappa, and his amazing bassists and drummers. I wonder if this thread will be popular.
Hoping to get along to this, as I believe is Nige/xilldx. Any other BC'ers fancy hooking up?
Yeah I am, looking forward!
I'm going to chime in quickly to say that when I upgraded from a BBoT on a Precision bass to a 'no-name' (well made) high mass bridge, it was easy to hear the improvement, even in recordings. Don't get me wrong here, it wasn't Nigel Tufnell sustain or whatever. You could however tell that the notes had more depth and a stronger note definition. So, I stand by *decent* bridge upgrades if a 'no-name' can sound better. Who knows - maybe my BBoT was a sub standard part to start with. But that's very unlikely.
And yet Scott Thunes said he swapped the original BBoT for a Badass on his '65 P-Bass and swapped them straight back, said the Badass was a piece of sh*t. Maybe it's down to what you're used to and what you expect.
haha i knew you'd be along soon yes twas I - but i dodnt lend them i gave them - feel free to pass on freely
Super! I wasn't sure and it's really been pissing me off. Thank you so much for them! I haven't even started reading them yet, I'm so busy. I will indeed pass them on through BC when I've read them mate.
