1.
Self consciousness is the biggest barrier to most peoples vocal efforts. I sing BVs and have occasionally done lead, I don't rate my voice but can put on a 'proper singing voice' to get a job done. I'd give anything for a major set of pipes... and a great sound, would swap it for my bass playing abilities anyday. I sing flat often, so have that to work against, it helps to know where you're at in technical terms as it gives you something to aim for. PS a good teacher will help for sure, but really good teachers in anything are hard to find....
That's an interesting point! So would I. But there's little one can do if the tone of one's voice is not beautiful.
 2. Singing can mean an awful lot of things. You don't even have to be a good singer to be a frontperson, but you DO have to have the required personality to carry it off. I actually think most people can learn to sing, except Stephen Fry, but it depends what you intend to do with your voice. I can sing reasonably well, have quite a range at over two octaves and a nice-ish falsetto, and can sing harmony with little effort, but I don't dig the sound of my singing voice and I am not comfortable singing with a fake voice. I had some lessons and they were useful, but mostly for technique and good practice. I am a decent backing vocalist, but not a character vocalist. Most people can imitate Elvis right? But you can't disconnect your voice from your personality, and whatever you sing in earnest will have a much more emotional effect on you than what you play on an instrument, leading to everything from great pleasure and confidence, to scrotum-shrivelling embarrassment. There is often more unlearning than learning at the beginning, and finding out the best questions to ask. For instance I always thought one had to sing loudly (having been a rock fan most of my life), but singing at, or just above, your speaking level is usually fine for most things, certainly you get a richer and more controlled tone that way. So I reckon their are two elements to singing lessons, learning technique and breathing, and liberating your vocal personality and character.
 3.
Seeing as this is now in the public domain I guess it's best you see this - no idea what it means for the likes of me - I'm curious to see how BGM now re-surfaces: http://www.mi-pro.co...y-formed/016347
Sorry to hear this, Mike.
 4.
Probably just as well they didn't take me up on my offer... That's a pity about Guitar Buyer - a couple of years ago it was by far the best of the guitar magazines IMO.
Totally agree.
 5. Jon Shuker made one for me to my design. He did a lovely job.
 6. Yep, POD X3 LIVE, unless they make something better, which they will, then I'll upgrade. Until then ..
 7.
There's a lot of people like yourself who list the gear they use in the signatures so a browse through a selection of threads in this forum and the general Bass Guitars forum should reveal plenty. However I have something which IMO is far important in my sig - a link to my music.
Another +1
 8. http://basschat.co.uk/forum/4-gear-porn/ It's all in here mate, see you in a couple of months
This is more a curiosity question than anything. I don't know, I just enjoy hearing about what equipment different players, and why they use it. So yeah, fire away, what equipment do you use? Amps, guitars, effects, anything! If anyone actually cares, here's my bass and my amp.
9.
Guitar Buyer is no longer being printed.
The OysterHouse Norovirus killed them?! Well I know it's a serious infection, but blimey! I'm sure I saw an issue in WH sh*t recently.
 10.
Exactly . Cant see the mag lasting much longer than 2 years or so.
Thing is, I don't think this is Ben's fault. He introduced a few new good things. I think it's Oysterhouse's fault, they seem to have infected all their magazines with norovirus. Have you seen Guitar Buyer since they took it over? A shadow of its former self. Athough with things like this, it's hard to lay your finger on tangible differences and explain why it's changed. And you have to examine yourself to see if it's your own attitude to musician's magazines that's changed too.
 11.
I got one last week. Dunno if it's the current one for yous we're usually a month behind when I can find it. Isit just me or has the quality of the paper went downhill too. It seemed to be cheap nasty stuff more akin to what the freebie included would be made off.
I actually prefer the new lightweight recycled paper, it fits better with the content.
 12.
Funny I've been doing this (simple setup - bog standard P-bass, amp, cab) for a while and am now heading the other direction with a fancy 5 string, collection of pedals, etc. I still have the simple setup for when I'd rather do that though. The (somewhat depressing) question is, will anyone in the audience notice the difference? I think we all know the answer to that...
They may notice how good the band sounds, it's a subliminal thing most of the time. They are not interested in your gear or that you boosted 370Hz with a low Q. But they'll notice if you play with a sh*t sound that makes the band sound poor.
 13. I don't read it anymore. Ben seems to have great intentions, but sadly, it's not a quality mag really. Just seems like Metro for bassists, except I think there are way more typos and errors in BGM.
 14. I tried this a few months ago. It fell dead on its arse. Maybe it's me :/ http://basschat.co.uk/topic/162394-venue-review-wiki-whats-your-next-gig-going-to-be-like/page__p__1486230__hl__venue__fromsearch__1#entry1486230
 15. Sorry fella, I know where you're coming from, but it all depends on the application doesn't it. One thing I learned quickly is that when you create your patches, you should always tweak the final eq while playing over music. Quite often, my lovely sounds are sh*t when soloed, but fit nicely into the overall mix. I'll get an amp (for stage monitoring) when I get a rodie In the meantime, I stick with my amazingly versatile, highly portable, wonderfully sounding POD X3 LIVE.
 16. Clarky, this is brilliant news! I just had a listen on SC, it's really great! Lovely voices and accomplished playing and writing. I really like it! Reminded me of a few things but without sounding like any, that's a good thing in my book. Have a splendid gig at the Hoots, nice venue, especially for this. I can't make it, but I will try to get to another gig. Congratulations mate!
 17.
Yes but he wants £220. See above I have a 93 Cij jazz - I was quite interested in a genuine cij precision also, not least as an investment . Less keen on a parts model, and an expensive one at that
Go for a really good non-export Japan Precision then, but please don't think of it as an investment. You won't make much if anything on it (unless it was way below normal prices), they are not going to appreciate anything like an old USA Fender which are wreathed in mojo, superstition and general bullshit. Keep checking far east guitars, John's a top bloke with contacts in Japan and gets a few over from time to time. They are always lovely examples. I had a gorgeous Jazz of him. This is the only bass he has in at the moment, a beautiful non-export B&B '75 RI Jazz http://www.fareastguitars.co.uk/usedbasses.htm
 18.
Ok - being asked for 220 pounds. It has a graphite nut. Anyone else agree with d Lloyd ?
I'm with d. I might go to £180 depending on condition, and if the body is a decent one, neck fits tightly and squarely, etc.
 19.
That looks pretty good. However, several things immediately strike me as being poorly thought out from my PoV. 1. I don't like two-tier pedal units. I find that in the heat of performance I nearly always accidentally hit the lower tier buttons when going for an upper tier one. Unless the iPad app you are using has hundreds of patch locations so you can continually step up each time you change patch I would want both the program up and program down buttons on the lower tier. 2. There doesn't appear to be a display to show the patch number on the pedal 3. The dock needs a rack mount adaptor that allows it to be stored flat for transport and then pulled out and rotated upright when in use. 4. Not at all convinced of the suitability of using ethernet cables and RJ45 connectors in gigging situations. These cables are designed for static installations - not constantly unplugged and coiled up every evening. Neither the cable or the connectors are robust enough. I'm already on my fourth cable for my Pod and Shortboard. The specialised multiway DIN cables that I had for my previous Peavey and Roland systems were much more gig-worthy and robust.
Have just looked into it a bit more, I think you're absolutely right. I can't really think what advantages there are over my POD X3 which is pretty robust. The only negative is that I can't check my email on stage with the POD, which is a total bummer isn't it.
 20.
if you say so.
I do. Let's leave it at that shall we, since it's a waste of my time, and not helping the OP.
 21.
Does look quite good. Whether you would want it in a sweaty smelly urine soaked pub though is a different matter. What price is an iPad these days anyway?
It depends, but around £600 I believe.
 22.
Something like http://www.gear4musi...or-for-iPad/IMM
Ohh, cheers mate! That looks ace!
 23.
You didn't upset me... I just think your approach is wrong in terms of what the OP is asking. Time and tempo is all important... I wasn't the one who was talking about kick drums and lock-ins exclusively, but I maintain, if you start on 90 bpm and deviate much more from that because it might suit the flow and concept I'd be thinking that time the keeping was awful. as in the groove isn't working, lets speed it up.. Why not get the groove in the first place unless the players aren't upto it...?? I think the OP coming back to this after this side-track is to his credit and also that there are standards to perform to even if your units don't. And to move this onto the reasons why, go to any recording thread and any click thread. I'd offer that most units would benefit in the long term playing to a click, but it is easy not to insist
Um, this is that part I don't get, and it's a bit annoying, because you are implying my bands are in some way unskilled, and that I don't care about tempo and timing. Why do you think my 'units' don't have standards? I have made it perfectly clear that timing and tempo is extremely important. Timing discipline is absolutely critical in Indian classical traditions in terms of raag structures. Raags start slowly, and the tempos increase throughout the piece until the end, where they are usually very fast. The tempo is led by the sitarist, the tabla player and the other musicians have to react very quickly and seamlessly to these changes. It takes a great amout of training and discipline. Please don't imply this is a trainwreck or pure luck or uncaring of the audience, that is deeply unfair, and simply wrong.
 24. Say I get an iPad to use as my live rig, running amplitube for example, is there a floor board available that I can control patches with, maybe with an expression pedal? Sorry, new to this iPad lark. Thanks.
 25.
Guessing export as it has no binding . It's not a 62 or anything like that
That's not a reliable test mate, many non-exports look like standard instruments. Have a look at the rear of the headstock, non-exports usually have full sized bass-plates for the tuners, exports usually have smaller plates. In any case, exports in good nick go for £400 - £450, maybe more for a minter. Non-exports can fetch up to £650 or more, they usually have USA pickups, alder bodies, generally much higher spec.
