This thread is completely mental. The essay question has nothing to do with 'authenticity', it is much more related to developing and maintaining artistic INTEGRITY, whatever that may mean. Just sounds like another music college ripping off their students with this bullshit instead of teaching them MUSIC, and letting them form their own philosophical approaches. FFS
but if your personality/spirit/character is created from an assembly of ideas and concepts that have already been 'processed' by others, what does that mean for authenticity ?
Therein lies a wonderful argument I actually feel like a pointless assemblage. No authenticity here.
Sorry only just got back to this and not had chance to read through yet. With the nature of the argument it's very hard to actually define authenticity, I posted a couple definitions on the first pages. I guess in its simplest terms, undeniable credibility.
The definitions you give are not what I would consider to be the root of the question. Are you sure these are the definitions given by your assignment? What is the actual question in your assignment? I posted a definition of philosophical 'authenticity' earlier. That makes much more sense to me. Authenticity is a technical term in existentialist philosophy, and is also used in the philosophy of art and psychology. In philosophy, the conscious self is seen as coming to terms with being in a material world and with encountering external forces, pressures and influences which are very different from, and other than, itself. Authenticity is the degree to which one is true to one's own personality, spirit, or character, despite these pressures. Different types of existentialist philosophers see this process in different ways. A lack of authenticity is considered to be bad faith.
Hey guys, i'm in the middle of doing some research in Authenticity in popular music for an assignment at uni. I thought i'd open the discussions with you lot. What are your feelings on the matter, what makes for example Led Zeppelin more authentic than lets say, Jedward etc... You can see where i'm going with this So what is your take on authenticity in music. What makes it authentic and what doesn't.
PLEASE DEFINE 'AUTHENTICITY' !! I think most of this thread is barking up the wrong small shrub.
If that was me, it would be gone the day after I saw it. Get it before its too late. You may not play another one like it.
Yep, that's it. Flog your gear and get it. That sh*t rarely happens. I got rid of all my basses for my current perfection.
Thanks for that Pete- in the minority here but I thought it was great. His feel AND sound are incredible in the solo sections. Incredibly supportive. Is that his new lineup? I found the drummer's take refreshing- Poogie is a monster no doubt but it's good to hear him with different musos. Some of the previous posts are a bit embarrassing if I'm honest- just imagine if Jaco was around today and a member on here. He wouldn't (and doesn't usually) stand a f***ing chance.
How can a solo be supportive? Confused of Ealing.
Much as I personally don't like the heavily manufactured modern day Opportunity Knocks stuff, this type of arguement can quickly become meaningless. Who are we to say that Guy Chambers' songwriting isn't 'authentic' for god's sake!
Well quite. But the object is not determinism, but self examination. I think.

A new mate of mine called Matt, he plays Harmonica like a demon!

Oh well, maybe you need to be on FB. It was amazing anyway. Johnston, you can be my friend anytime mate -
Actually, you could say that Led Zep were authentically following in the tradition of their blues forebearers by stealing earlier songs and making them their own! I mean, who wrote 'Dust My Broom', Elmore James or Robert Johnson?? Answer, neither - Johnson adapted the song from some earlier bluesman (and who's to say that that guy didn't get it from someone else) and adapted it just as Elmore James adapted RJ's version! This has always happened throughout the history of music.....
I have a feeling the assignment is based on THIS definition http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Authenticity_(philosophy) In which case I think it is far too wide a question. Probably more interesting to get into specifics like is Guy Chambers' songwriting 'authentic'?
WTF has 'authenticity' to do with music FFS?! If this question has been set by your 'educational' establishment I will not be able to sleep tonight for anger and disillusion with our educational establishment. What a ridiculous f***ing question.
OK, so maybe I am wrong about this and maybe it's questioning the reflection of the 'self', or otherwise, through popular music, rather than exploitation of the masses through musical hymns.
Unlike MM's tone, which sounds like Robocop taking a cheese grater to his genitalia! Painful. Clanky. Mindless. Totally unnecessary.
Well, it suits him. I just don't like what he does.
-
Best. Quote. Ever.
Really? As much as I like Rhys, it's one of those phrases that elicits the same response to it that I think MM's tone does. I actually like to think my tones ARE the donkey's bollocks - big, sturdy, durable, and can survive pounding the sands of chav towns day in and day out, even if I am a slave in a stupid hat.
-
You are making great sense Gaf. Also, I think his 'tone' (which I found to be the utmost in clinical and ugly), is designe to make him audible, and not to make the music sound nice as a whole. Horrid bass tone to my ears, dry as a year-old sponge cake and just as tasteless.

Great technique use to impress me when I was young because I aspired to be able to be technically excellent. I worked quite hard in a misguided way to try to get great facility on my instrument. However, the older I get, the less use I have for it. Now my tools are all about intelligent composition and expression, and the sensitivity you acquire when you have some control over your instrument. I am still a musical baby, but I would like to think that I can express my personality a bit. This video seems to exploit the infancy of the aspirant musician, and allow the players to show off their skills. To me that is not what represents the essence of what the ART of music 'should' be about. But we are all different, we all express ourselves differently. I found the video a bit childlike, and therefore completely uninspiring, style over substance. Sorry Pete.
On a sustainer equipped instrument: Roland GK3/piezo bridge -> Graphtec Ghost Hexpander MIDI pre -> Axon AX100 -> Synth module
How do the GK and the Sustainer interact? I would have thought the GK is what drives the synth and the other pickups don't get a look in.
Was excellent, well done to the lot of you, great gig! The felines were very well behaved too (once I made it clear that my shoe laces were not for their amusement)
Thanks Si So glad you could be there! Nx

Have a superb first gig Clarky! Sorry I can't be there mate.

Wal 5-string. Disgusting horrible musicianly-looking elephantitis-afflicted mank. Then I tried Happy Jack's. Now I want one.
-
Thank you mate! Just a matter of finding someone who will do it properly now I've wanted one of these for a long time, but only now do I have a proper application for it, and my style evolved to the degree that I can use it properly and express myself, rather than pissing about. Thanks again.
-
I really want to do this but how do you get all those electronics into the Strat and still keep the original in there? I love the sound of my USA Deluxe Strat so I would ideally like to run the Sustainer as a separate set of tronics, but do I need to? Not bothered about keeping the Fender TBX tone circuit though. Anyone done this? I would take it to a pro to fit everything, just want to know the possibilities. Cheers.

Quite often it's like Jake says, a confidence thing. Maybe the OP would like to post a sample of his singing so we can give an honest and constructive appraisal?
