1.
Quote from Janek: I think he means here, so stiff upper lip, etc, and sort your sh*t out - I'm not having the Talkbass loonies being praised for their measured response
He also posted this, which I like 'If I lose a few "bass fans" along the way, I couldn't be happier. It's like people who are on your mailing list that are dead weight. They hang out and open one out of 50 emails you send out, and probably only arrived on the list to get something free in the first place. The more people like that I can trim away the better. People who call themselves "fans" just so they can hang out and make derogatory comments about what you do aren't really fans at the end of the day are they? People who focus too much on the instrument and not on the music generally come to shows and stand there motionless all night with their coat still on, and perhaps even a backpack with the latest copy of whatever industry magazine they just picked up, a set of strings or a pair of drumsticks. They don't buy drinks which pisses of the club or venue owner, and they certainly don't bring girls to the show which gets old after a while... and the worst part of all, they don't position themselves in a place of openness to enjoy the music because they're so wrapped up in how impossible it is to play as fast as Matt, Me, Hadrien or whoever. What they haven't realized is that if they really wanted to, they could play like that in 3 years. But there you come across yet another major issue with most people who are on this thought path or trajectory, they don't ever want to do the work. I really feel blessed to have such incredible fans that come out to shows and buy or download my music. They are loving, kind, and respectful, and I can do nothing but the same thing back to them. Long may this trend continue for my music. I will die a very happy person if this is the shape of things to come.'
 2.
Hmmm - needs more Rickenbacker...
Not anymore mate. Rickenbackers are banned on Basschat now.
 3. Excellent mate! I'll stand you a Creme de Menthe
 4. That's right, Monday. We are on at a sensible time too, about 9.45. I know you people do naff all on a Monday evening so no excuse
 5.
You obviously havnt been at a live performance of Beethoven's 9th symphony
I was only joking mate
 6.
Yep thanks for the link. Ordered. I understood from interviews that Rush wanted to go in and remix S&A
Maybe they should rewrite it at the same time.
 7.
Now there Nigel, that seems like an expression of contempt for your fellow musicians and members of the musical equipment trade, people who make up (whether you like it or not) part of your extended group of peers. You really do have to work out these self-hatred issues, they are only holding you back….. The reason that I mentioned the reaction at the trade show was to back up the point that Bilbo made in his post that his audience is only those who have an understanding of a pretty narrow part of the fusion / jazz cannon. If JG can’t get a favourable reaction out of the trade show crowd then he’s really f**ked if he ever has to face an audience made up of the general public! As it is, it seems that his target audience is predominantly made up of a section of people who frequent bass and certain jazz forums, including those who have been insulting each other on this thread! I find his music as dull as ditchwater (as I do the others he is being compared to here), but then my knowledge of this type of music is limited (but not non-existent). Even I can see that he is not close in terms of writing ability to the likes of Weather Report (for example) but that I can also accept that he is obviously a highly capable player who scores some highly prized gigs with guys who are extremely big names in the fusion world…..
Not at all, I am expressing contempt for those who appreciate style and skill over substance, which seems to me to be an increasingly common trait over the last 25 years.
 8.
Reasonably-priced pre-order with goodies here: http://www.classicro...-a-month-early/
Done! Thanks WoT
 9.
I have my favourite classical pieces but would never argue the merits of Bach over Beethoven because I don't know the genre well enough. I would always look to the experts for a considered view and develop a perspective that way. The trouble with the net is everyone is an expert, whatever their knowledge or experience. Each contributor is given equal weight without any qualification.
Bach and Beethoven are sh*t. Mahler's yer man, he shits all over Bach and Beethoven. If you don't agree you don't know sh*t, man. Seriously.
 10.
Good post All I could say about JG comes from a YouTube clip for TC Electronics at a trade show, where there was an audience that was definitely listening but looked, well slightly bored! The next clip was Uriah Duffy playing at the same event, thru the same amp and to exactly the same audience, who were all smiling and clearly interested in what he was playing. Needsless to say, Uriah Duffy received MUCH more applause then Janek did......
But they the worst audiences of them all, a bunch of happy-clapping helmets who have no musical appreciation whatsoever, standing around a little stand watching someone demonstrate some non-musical technique with the aim of selling some gear. Whatever I think of Janek's music, I have to agree with him that these people are a drain, a f***ing burden, on the musicians and the people who really enjoy music.
 11.
I don't think i'll be infringeing any copyrights by saying that I would sooner cut off my jacobs with a rusty penknife than buy a Rick product. I've never been a big fan of their stuff anyway, but now? Not if it was the last bass on the planet.
A mate of mine loves Ricks, has a few guitars all fairly new, and a 4001. He's had to send a couple of the guitars back to be replaced because of QC issues and poor finishing, he has a (360?) 12 string that has a tuning peg route that was totally messed up at the factory, and his 4001 had to have a new nut and full set up at the Gallery to stop the G falling off the side of the neck when played. The string mute adjuster keeps falling off too, awful bridge design. He still loves them but readily admits he's more often than not disappointed with the quality and quality control. He has to work had to get a good one, because they make so few of them. He's taken five years to get four that he's happy with, and even two of those needed work at his own expense I love the look of the 4001 basses, but I can't buy stuff from someone who behaves so pathetically, even if I wanted to, which I don't because they play so badly and are so poorly designed.
 12.
+1 - there's a definite lack of melodies on their latter-day albums.
And lack of sweetness. They could make major sound minor, 9/8 sound like 4/4 - there was instinct, romance and sensitivity in almost everything they did. It just seems like power-riffage and very unnatural time signatures now. I'm praying they have somehow reconnected with their inner truth or whathaveyou for this album.
 13.
That little fill Ged does at 00:26 sounds familiar... I'm tempted to say Bastille Day?
Exactly right I just hope geddy doesn't come in singing a no-melody melody a fifth above the tonic. It's getting really irritating that. Also Razcinulez had better leave the dynamics in there instead of that disgusting travesty of mastering on S&A. TBH, I'm more looking forward to the magazine interviews than the actual album
 14. BRX and Ed, totally know where you're coming from. And I would consider getting a powered monitor for stage. It was the digital versus analogue debate that started me off, I've heard far too many people dissing digital, claiming it sounds crap and whatever, which is complete bollocks, as we are aware.
 15.
I agree with everything except this. It's fun!! I have played gigs with no bass amp - just a bit of bass through the monitors. It sounds great out front through the PA but crap on stage. It's more fun when you have a great sound on stage. I used to carry around a rather large rig to gigs where the bass rig was shared, just because I wanted my own sound on stage, because it makes it more fun. Likewise at rehearsal - I need a bass rig, otherwise i'll have no fun
Ah, but all you need is a big monitor. An analogue bass rig is not the only way to have fun.
 16. Well, after nearly four years of using the POD X3 LIVE on stage and in the studio and two years after starting this thread, I am still perfectly delighted with it. I think my guitar and bass sounds are lovely and although I have been tempted to get a power amp and a Barefaced midget just for stage monitoring, I haven't and don't really see the need. I get serious thrills from my sounds, and I have no need nor desire to use anything else, unless Line 6 bring out the HD equivalent of the X3 Live. I also still believe that no-one can discern between digital and analogue and that digital modelling is the way forward. More flexibility, portability, reliability, power and control. I can't see any reason to be using such a limited and old fashioned artefact as an analogue bass or guitar amplifier and speaker cabinet either miced or DIed into the PA or recording device.
 17.
Hey guys, Here is that link for Talkbass http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f19/janeks-new-album-870390/ Check out the replies!
Mate, great thread! Janek's been totally cool about it too. Respect. We don't seem to have threads like that on BC. Why not?
 18.
No probs Nig nor need for apology, taste is a personal thing and yours is as valid as mine. I just like it for the innocent niceness of it.
Thanks Jake. I long for innocence in my cynical gnarled old head But I'm too far gone
 19. It's nice. Well sung, well played. But I'm afraid it's just a bit too one-dimensional for me. No allegory in the lyrics (unless it's about his dog or something), not enough interest in the arrangement, a bit too much playing to the folk-pop zeitgeist, all a bit bland for my tastes. But he does have a nice natural voice and I can imagine young girls swooning (unless he looks like a dog or something). Sorry Jake
 20.
I like it, but I like everything he's done. Each album is different which I think is cool and important. And Chris2112, no disrespect but I don't think you know what you're on about. You don't get Janek's level by being a pretender.
What level are you talking about? I just had a listen to five of the tracks off this album. Chris2112 is right. Janek has great bass skills and technical knowledge, but he really is better feeding off someone else's compositional creativity, he clearly doesn't have much wider compositional ability. This is elevator music really, it's ok, but ultimately unsatisfying, uninspiring, and derivative.
 21.
I think what we have here in this thread is the traditional British approach to masking emotionally awkward subjects by using humour.
Ahh, that must be it. Apologies for being so serious. After all, we didn't know the dead person so it's all fine.
 22.
I'm sure we're all mostly amused by the randomness of the thread rather than at the fact that someone has died...
Yes it's very amusing.
 23. That's really gorgeous!
