They seemed very pleased - and especially chuffed that I managed the gig despite jetlag! Their FB page mentions the "excellent new bassist"
Well bloody done mate! That must have been really satisfying!

Shame it's a bit distorted but I can hear what's going on, and it sounds excellent mate! And you look great! How was the feedback from the band on your first gig with them?

Join Sheema Mukherjee (sitar & vocals), Mittal Purohit (tabla), Hamilton Lee (drums), Nigel Dale (guitar), and Larry Whelan (keyboard & sax) for music that will get you dancing on Saturday evening. This performance will feature a variety of genres, with many raag based tracks, including two new arrangements of Tagore’s songs. This Dartington show is with a full band.

I'm playing a rare gig with Transglobal Underground fronted by Ingrid Webster to celebrate the music of the Zulu singer and actress who we played with until her untimely death, the fabulous Doreen Thobekile. Ingrid is Doreen's daughter and was a singer in Soul II Soul among others. She is a great performer. The last time we did this was at The Roundhouse a couple of years ago. It would be lovely to see some of you there for this one. Cheers, Nx Friday 11 May at 8pm Mau Mau Bar - 265 Portobello Road, W11 1LR London https://www.facebook.com/events/294074347333207/
I always thought i was a Northerner? Seems I was a Southerner all along ? Base ? I say PAH to base PS: Mind you there are some strange regional variations. I remember being in Sheffield at the swimming baths there, the one with the three high diving boards. I went up to the top one, and was wavering a bit at the end. One of the local lads behind me says "whats tha matter. Its only watter" (rhyming water with matter) Which i though highly amusing.
Yeah I got that all f***ed up and meant to type 'bAss' guitar. It doesn't matter though really, it's one of those threads that has no significance, I don't even know why I wasted my time replying
Is this therefore "inauthentic"? If so, "authenticity" is a worthless concept.
This I also believe and why I think this is the correct conclusion to the OP's assignment question.

Northerners do some f***ing strange things, but I've never heard one say Base Guitar before.
in discussing the music. IMO the music is authentic when written by an artist/ band for the purpose of expressing themselves rather than writing it to make money or having it restricted/adapted to fit in with an outsiders view of what a single should be. Unfortunately most pop music is manufactured and rarely written by the artist. This view is based on what i am taught and research, so could be inaccurate.
That's my view of this too.

How did that happen - "I've got blisters on my fingers "
do you find the skinny strings on guitars cause more probs than bass strings though? - bass strings is fine with me but as soon as i start noodling around on my old 6string acoustic it does start to take its toll in very little time at all
Absolutely! Same pressure concentrated into a tiny surface area. -

I've got good callouses, but I have been practising sitar lines on my acoustic guitar for some forthcoming gigs, and my fretting hand fingertips started hurting after ten minutes, even two days later they are still very tender. They will be hard as hammers in a week. I can deal with the pain, I have learned to enjoy it up to a point. -
It all down to personalities. If you think he, G A, can take it, tell him, it's always best to be open and up front. I would probably tell him anyway, there will always be something to upset him in the future if he can't understand your position. I'm afraid the art is what you have to serve in the end, you can't compromise it.
No time for a round of golf then? My main concern about that is that two of the guys in my current band are pro musicians too and they rely on live work as a part of their income. I would feel a bit uncomfortable if I have to turn down a gig because of double bookings with the other band and they lose out financially whilst I won't. They both used to split their time with a couple of other bands too, but now just focus on this one because its a good earner for them. I really don't want it to come down to a first come first served policy with either band, but if my current band was busier I wouldn't need to take this step.
I have time, but I would never use it for golf! I go fishing, I am quite obsessive about it! On your second paragraph, my regular gigger is looking for a deal, but my other three bands are full-on professional musicians with successful careers. I do fewer than 10 gigs per year with them all in total (used to be more) but everything is planned quite far in advance so any clashes are resolved early on and I've never had any upset or issues, ever. You also have the option of the occasional dep if there is an unresolvable clash.

I play in four bands and have a demanding day job and other responsonibilities. It all works fine as only one of them is a regular gigger. I agree with Charic too. As long as they are decent people they will understand. It's really down to being organised and making sure your bands are too. You'll only know if it's practical once you do it and see the patterns, but it is most definitely doable.
Of course, I am old and cynical so I listen to music for its own sake. I worked out a long time ago that musicians are on the whole just dudes doing a job. However, they tell me that those young people really care about stuff like this. They need to *identify* with their musical heroes. Well, possibly...
What a terribly sad indictment of the artist. I'm so glad I'm not like that.
You see, that is actually one of the arguments. The Auteur vs. Reproducer. The auteur is the man thats signing about poverty because he's in it. The reproducer is the man thats singing about what the other man's going through. Why is the Auteur generally classed as being authentic while the latter is not. It's never ending circles of arguments.
I unerringly disagree with that surmise. Writing about something that generates pain within you, whether its direct pain, or pain through empathy with another's, is not reproducing. All that matters is that it has integrity.
a poor person singing about poverty isn't singing solely about their poverty if they've heard any other music about poverty, or any other music for that matter. they'll be referencing all the other songs they've heard, even if they don't realise it. so, you could argue, their songs are as inauthentic as a rich person singing about poverty as they're not singing about themselves.
I would hope they are refering to their own feelings about poverty, not other songs about poverty.
-
Maybe but, correct me if I'm wrong, this is the argument that if you are a millionaire superstar musician you can't sing about poverty. It just seems like a pointless argument to me but perhaps that's the argument in itself.
I always found that argument to be bullshit too. If you are rich, why would that stop you singing about OTHER PEOPLE's poverty and the injustice and pain, etc. Unless the artist is a dumb f***ing sh*t with no empathy or soul.
Oh no, we get taught MUSIC. This lesson is just an hour a week of what i consider admin work to give the government some written work to look at.
Crap innit £9k a year to get asked 34 hours worth of complete bollocks. I hope the music teaching is better quality.
