1.
That really is a poor show. However, I've known people to ring Sounds Live and ask for boxes and get a negative reply. Said caller, suspicious that the sales assistant didn't actually check the stock room crosses the road and goes to shop and gets a box! If you're going to cycle shops check Steel's Cycles in Gosforth or Edinburgh Cycles at the top of Shields Road, Byker, they're usually good for boxes!
Cheers. I agree. Soundslive didnt even go and look when I rang, they just said 'sorry no'. Ive been in before and got one though. Ive managed to make two massive mega boxes from 4 or 5 small thick boxes, and put extra padding on the corners etc. The basses are in hardcases and also the hardcase is covered in bubble wrap....then about 2 layers of thick card or more. I go a bit over the top! GuitarGuitar are never that helpful I find. The bigger they get the worse they become unfortunately....last year they seemed much more open and happy!
2. Ill give this some thought and get back to you
3.
I think my next weekend off is the first weekend in Nov, when I will be lying in bed eating chips
Best post ever!
4.
If you say so. Ironically, now I think you don't know what patronising is.
Haha, but you are still slightly insulting his intelligence now. Please dont get the nearest copy of the dictionary out! It does seem that you dont even realise you are doing it. Nay mind! Group hug?!
5.
If you post a lot of basses & guitars, supermarket fruit boxes are the business: Your local Lidl will be delighted to let you take away as many of these as you can carry (they have to dispose of hundreds every day), and four of these & a hot-melt glue gun will build you a bomb-proof bass box. These are extremely rigid, with reinforced corners - they're designed to be stacked while filled with fruit & veg so they have to be sturdy. You have to unstick a couple of ends to make them overlap, bubble-wrap the bass, pack the box out with newspaper/whatever to stop it moving about inside and glue the top on by undoing ends to make it overlap. Cover any holes (these often have perforations/carrying handles) with sticky tape. They're adaptable too - use fewer boxes for guitars or instruments posted with the neck off. They come in half-sizes too which are useful for different sized instruments. I'll do a photo tutorial next time I pack a bass! Jon.
Hi Jon Thanks....Ive used some of these before and their is a market right near me that uses these boxes. Ill go and ask them on the way home. Both basses are hardcased so its going to take a fair bit of work, but worth it. Cheers
6. Cheers, good idea!
7. Im packing two basses tonight. Ive got more than enough for one bass, and the padding/proper tape. I go overboard so it should be safe. Can anyone suggest anywhere I could go to get a few cheeky boxes? They dont have to be guitar or bass shapes as I normally cut them to shape, then cover them in tape and padding. Eg a TV box or anything like that....Id need a few obviously. Ideas? Im going to ring Soundslive in a bit. GuitarGuitar said they charge £5 for a used tatty box. No thanks. I might drop by Tesco / etc.

SOLD

Oh heck...nice....hmm! I need a cheaper bass for rough gigs. Ill have a think. Any issues?
9. Totally over the top perhaps, but the RH450 + a nice 112? Even their RS112? Ulitmate flexibility, warmth, and 'tube' like sound, but light and quiet.
10. Great service!
11. Can't believe this thread has spawned into 5 pages. Sometimes, it is good to get everything out in the open, discuss, and make sure we all have our own say as politely as possible. Hence the reason for a forum, to discuss. The reason I sometimes chime in with comments is that I have fallen foul of internet 'gear hype' on quite a few occasions, and I dont like how much it ends up costing me. Luckily, with the Metros, I got to test one fully. My girlfriend thinks they look incredibly well made, but could tell straight away by my face, it just wasnt for me. Thats fair I guess. If they are for you, thats fair as well! Talkbass and Basschat all have flavour of the month equipment. I always like looking at new gear, but im cautious now. I know what works for me, and the same is true with amps/cabs, (tried so many its unreal, and still havent found a neo cab for me). The next time a Sadowsky owner disses a P bass or a Stingray, im right in there! (Kidding). But seriously if you want a tone that cuts, nothing beats a Ray...ever.
12. After realising I really don’t need 1000 variations of a P or J bass (1 of each is enough) Im now back to where I was years ago. Eg, I love my Fenders and the sound they make, but EBMM basses still just work for me. I find I can even play them better, especially fingerstyle, (more than likely the string spacing and EQ available). Im bucking the trend I guess, but I think once you find a manufacturer that ticks all the boxes (eg consistent quality control, comfortable feel, great sound and aesthetically pleasing) then its sometimes best to stick with it. Ive flirted with Lakland, Warwick, tried a few Sadowsky Metros, tried a Rickenbacker 4003, and yet I still go ‘this isnt right, for me’. The Bongo. Never in my wildest dreams did I think Id want one. Odd design, silly amount of power on tap, and very modern. Ive been listening to demo and researching online about the pickups, the build, the history and the pricing. It seems whilst they are expensive, for what you get, they are stunning. Ive never been one to dare to step out of P/J/Ray shapes, but now its time I think to have at least one different bass! It seems to have held its head up for 7 or 8 years and its still popular, now even with a 6 string! So what are your thoughts on the Bongo? Im interested in a Bongo 5 HH. On the other side of the fence sits the EBMM Sterling 5 HS. But, that’s pretty close to my Stingray 5 HS I guess, except ceramic and with a slightly different body shape.
13. Nowt unfortunately...
14.
But by the same token, this is just mostly all banter but some some don't want to hear it..and some are getting rather defensive. oh well..
A little defensive and getting a little upset. People slag Ps all the time, I dont care! I hope people don't think I'm patronising them, but I DO feel like people are patronising me about the issue! Flavour of the month? Is it barefaced again? I dunno...
15. Uber babe
16. Tempted. Any issues?
17. Jees what venues are you playing? If its super loud, id just go all out doom and forget lightweight/micros. TUBES + 4x12sssss.
18.
That doesn't show on the link! Only £857! All the others have the special offer undeneath the price! And she's "only" 600W@4Ohms and the Supertwelve will go up tp 1000W@4Ohms... I'm still very leaned to Alex's cabs for a keeper. Oh!, just confirmed that the Promethean is only 250W... Thomann almost tricked me! That one is out of the list.
Im not saying dont get it, just make sure you are 100%. You will never need 1000W, and the Genz cabinet is excellently made, very road worthy but also pretty! http://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_sp..._Neox_Cabs.html £675 including shipping to the EU. Im just giving you options, that's all Please, don't just go on something through specs and power rating. That Genz cabinet is bomb proof and very desirable. If you ever tried to sell it, youd not lose a lot. Plus, the Shuttle 9.0 and 212T is a combination people have been using since the 9.0 came out over on Talkbass. Good reviews and matching manufacturer. Bloody hell I dont even have any Genz, so I dont know why im going on so much. If I didnt have the Aguilar and Markbass/TC, id have Genz gear.
19.
It's not that I don't like Sadowsky basses, as far as basses go they're alright. Solid, useable basses that get the job done in an unspectacular fashion, if you're looking for jazz bass or modern jazz bass sounds. A bass I don't like would be well, a Gibson or a P bass or something (so no, I doubt I'd like a Sadowsky P bass either, it is an inherently poor design IMO). As far as jazz basses go, they're not the best and they're not the worst. Although the Sandberg California J basses sounded and felt much better than the Sadowsky Metros through the same amp for considerably less; perhaps there is something to be said for A/B'ing these things!
Ive not played a Sandberg but I think the prices are VERY reasonable. What I dont understand with most high end makers, is that they just give you a bloody gig bag. Some gig bags are fantastic, although they wont beat the Mono one I invested in, (I hope not for the price!). Now, I understand their aim when its for city bass players, but I would NEVER heavily gig without a full case. If you are paying over £1k, id expect a proper case, or a discount on one.
20.
I've seen the Neox 212T, she's the kind of cab i would buy to keep but the Supertwelve T looks so much better and has better specs in every point for a fairly smaller price...
Supertwelve T £675 GB Neo x 212T - http://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_sp..._Neox_Cabs.html £655 on offer Id take the Neo X 212T
21.
I intend to do that but near where i live it's a bit hard to find top-end cabs, just the usual Ampeg-SWR-Warwick huge and heavy crap!
Ah I see. I would actually suggest, from the massive amount of good reviews, that you check out the Genz Benz Neo X 212T. Even the cab gurus on Talkbass like it! I would take one of those with the Shuttle 9.0 and keep it! Lightish, well regarded, and built well. Plus, well known manufacturer as you know. Dont make weight the ONLY factor in buying a cab unless you absolutely must IMO.
22.
@Musicman20 - A friend of mine who's opinon i trust just told me he tried the head with Aguilar and EBS cabs (didn't specify wich of them) at a store and got the impression they didn't sound so good with the GB as they're own amps. He tolled me to get a Bergantino for it.
The Berg AE212 would be great with it no doubt. It would cost a fair bit but be top end. Depends on tone goals I guess. Sorry I was trying to advise on cabs in general, not just for ones now. Id test what you can before you go ahead.
23. Personally, I would go and test before you buy it, if possible. My all time favourite cabinet so far is the Aguilar DB212. Its fairly large and not light, but it is a sonic powerhouse. It does come with casters, has great resale value, and looks stunning. Very well built and has that Aguilar quality to it. A 1x10 is worthless with that amp. Id go for an absolute minimum of a quality high end 2x12 (4 or 8 ohms). Or 2 x 112. Its a buyers market
