Nah I didn't play 5s back then, but the general comparison points still stand. Maybe I'm misguided but I'd expect to a 12" to deliver an equally good if not better low B than a 10"; and you're really looking at a 210 if you're going head to head with a BF SC, BB2 or F112. In terms of quality, price and portability in the round, I'm not sure I'm going to find a 210 that will out do these three.
-
Didn't say I liked it, but it would certainly pad out the price for the VT Bass DI...
-
Ah gotcha (I think!). I was trying to articulate what the opposite of "B string snap" might be and I came up with "woolly". I had a VK210 MNT which is a really good cab, but I found it a little painfully toppy and replaced it with the more rounded VK 210 LNT. I did find the original MNT more musical than the 'flatter' BB2 (which I am coming back full circle to) when I A/Bd them at the Bass Gallery a couple of years back. The Fearless F112 and my previous 212s (Berg and Mesa PH 212) trumped the VK 210 LNT for clarity / articulation. So l've had a bit of experience with VK 210s in arriving at my preference for 12" and the VKs are excellent cabs.

Decent quality 1x12 (or 212) cabs are not woolly in my experience. BF is a little lighter on mids in comparison to Fearless, but nothing that an active bass or decent amp EQ can't sort; whilst the BF SC peaks out at 4kHz, which is its key limitation for me, but that's not an issue for the BB2 (or F112). I'm a fan of the 1x12 for compact cabs and I'd personally take one over a 210 (and no question over a 110) - it's the best balance between tight response and full low end for my ears. I'm a little more into scooping now that I'm becoming more of a comic / slapstick performer and I've loved some of tones from some of the more recent Tech 21 pedals; but the VT Bass DI sill seems to come out top for many Tech 21 afficiandos, so I thought I'd give it a spin. If it doesn't work out Dave has kindly offered to take it off my hands for £50. I might just get him to throw a Fender amp head in whilst he's at it...

I totally agree - no point in binge buying, but being on the wagon for a decent period of time can actually be really helpful for some of us in not constantly getting distracted by the next shiny thing out there. You've clearly understood the psychology of this in a forensic manner and not had to self-isolate! Besides, when kit comes up at prices you're not expecting (e.g. that VT DI pedal - which has since gone up by nearly 20% at the retailer I've just taken delivery from), or because they don't come up very often (e.g. a mint BB2) sometimes you have to jump... and you know what a sucker I am for a bass bargain!
-
That really is a very good price.
-
That sounds really good, you got a link to the one you went for? Not that I need one right now, but it's always good to know about decent gig bags! My Gator is fine but I'd prefer a tougher outer layer.
-
Good job Andertons are currently doing 25% off the Sire bags currently isn't it? Or 50% off if you ask nicely when you're buying a Sire bass off them 😉 Slim is always good (provided they are well padded - particularly at the base) - will nicely offset my lack thereof.
-
That would be a bit obvious though wouldn't it? 😁 If the Sire gig bag is as good as you say it is, a couple of my gig bags could be finding themselves out on the street (well not literally)...
-
Good job I've kept that oversized Gator then...

Fuzz pedal with envelope filter - suggestions please

FWIW, I had the Mastotron and loved it. Great pedal. But it didn't survive the arrival of the Red Ripper on my board. -
Black or silver replacement pots on that finish - what would you go for?
-
You do realise you're easily one of the top contributors to this thread already, don't you? Other than tempt us with your gear over the next 12 days are we going to get you to sign up for a period of purdah for the rest of the year or is your bass build going to scupper that? How's that coming along?
-
These look good thanks! I think I'm correct I'll need to get two stacked pots (they're actually £13.90 a piece) plus two pairs of single pots (currently £5.90) a pair = just under £40 in total? Was possibly thinking replacement black, but silver to match the bridge and offset by the dark tort PG could work very well too. Hmmm... decisions, decisions! All I do know is that they won't be pink, like Dave's knobs 😂 I managed to get Andertons to discount their current list price for an Alder P7 5 v2 and gigbag by a little over £40 after a bit of arm twisting, so it's clear that discount is pretty much going to pot then 😁

It's inversely proportional to the brick shi*house build of the bass player 😁

You could well do far worse than the Red Ripper which I can happily vouch for, if that's what you get lumbered with. The Prunes'n'Custard has a devoted following (not had one myself) - supposedly less versatile than the Ripper but nails what it does even better from comments I've heard. @lee650knows his way around this area as well as most methinks. -
Oooh good question about pups. Strings are definitely OK we're all agreed. Cases to protect basses are fine, boards and PSUs to organise and get the most out of your pedals, just dandy. But a decent pup, well that's a BIG part of a bass's sound isn't it? Whereas a set of lightweight replacement tuners are not. So we should probably draw the line with pups. Easy solution, get them ordered before Mar 25th and you're good to go! Totally with you about the portability of single 12" cabs. I'm just about to get my third as it happens, but I still can't bring myself to part with that lightweight bundle of barefaced cheek I bought from you a while back and has done me proud. Do you still want to sign up? It looks like it's could save you well in excess of £1k if it stops you getting an amp and a (Sadowsky!) bass, so we'll worth the £5 if you do slip up!
-
Luverly! See - emotionally you already have that in your herd. Look forward to hearing how it plays when it finally arrives.
-
You're getting the idea! And £45 should just about cover it 'cos they can't be that great if you keep moving yours on? Or you can pay me in kind with one of your 487 spare amps...
-
Yeah, this is gear abstinence made easy (other than it will cost you a £fiver when you fail). It's basically an excuse for me to climb back on the wagon, having spectacularly failed, this week. If I don't, I'm going to go the way of et @cetera and end up with a gazillion basses (all likely to be different shades of the same Spector model). But OBVIOUSLY I didn't fail anywhere nearly as spectacularly as @FinnDave whose spectacularly-ness of wagon-falling-off was wondrous to behold and will be sung around camp fires in the vicinity of bouncy castles for eons to come. The fact that you've put the deposit down already on your tasty custom bass is all good. The matter has been fully disclosed to the tax authorities, as far as I'm concerned. Er hmm - @dave_bass5 I think we've found the loop hole for your VT Bass DI itch. Just bung me a £fiver by way of deposit and if I don't sell it to you then we can put towards something more liquid. That seems to have all basses covered. You've been duly added to the wall of shame.

So, just how many basses do you own ????

Yes, maybe, but that doesn't change the fact that I'm still overweight 😁
