  1. Ever considered going half way and getting a Stagg 3/4 EUB? Don't cost the earth and are a lot of fun. And there is just something uber cool about playing walking bass on an upright! Does mean standing up to practice, though...
  2. @hiram.k.hackenbacker meant to say, well done on getting your bass away - always nice when that happens. If it has been a 5er I would have been very very tempted myself!
  3. btw @ead, whilst I'm being cheeky, is your full name 'eadg' or 'bead'? 😁
  4. What else have you said that about over the years then? 😁 Look forward to you revealing all (about the bass)!
  5. LSD (yeah they chose their name deliberately!) were simply outstanding. Their double bassist wrote a fair chunk of their material and provides a pretty decent BV to boot!
  6. Oooh you little sneak! (Ok pot and kettle...tbf so did I, arrived on Tuesday 😁). What did you get? Pics please!
  7. Damn! Those gals can play!!
  8. Well you could get 4 of these basses for that money. I just got the one, oh and the BF cab in the picture and maybe a VT Bass DI pedal as well at the start of this week. Fortunately @bassfan hasn't noticed so, I've not been marked absent yet 😁
  9. Well if you're a BJ tribute band then I guess you should emulate their live set by doing both back to back eh 😉 I suspect it would go down a storm...hmmm wonder if I can persuade my crew to include in our set!
  10. I often find myself thinking that certain songs are very close in some or a lot of aspects to others I've heard. I couldn't help but think that the Keep the Faith had a lot of similarities in the bass line / rhythm section to the Stones "Sympathy for the Devil". Did a search a while back and turns out that Bon Jovi were in full agreement!
  11. What is nicely showy on that one is including the second half of the bass solo riff an octave up at the dusty end part way through the solo. 24 fret basses definitely help!
  12. I used to regularly get some bit of Sweet Child wrong, perhaps 'cos it was our encore number and after 2 hours late at night with a pub full of drunken air guitarists, I (mostly) got away with it - although very little escapes the attention of our drummer! Recently the guitarist got the intro muddled and it was very much an "at last it's not me" moment!! Two tracks I kinda enjoyed but found very demanding were Keep the Faith by Bon Jovi and Higher and Higher - Jackie Wilson. Certainly the Wilson riff wasn't particularly technically difficult but maintaining just one riff metronomically precise for 4 mins was quite a challenge, for me anyway! We've not played them live yet but I think Muse's Hysteria, Duran Duran Rio and quite a few Jamiroquoi numbers will require a fair bit of work to nail.
  13. You know the one that you always used to (or still!) dread before it came up each time in the set and still have a huge sense of relief when you've got through it and not balls'ed it up? Full disclosure: ulterior motive is that I'm sure this thread will give me and anyone else "grounded" at home by this bloo*dy virus a chance to work on some challenging new material with some of the extra time we have on our hands. If you want to post a clip of you playing it or the actual original track then please do! [Edit] Been some interesting themes coming up so far, so if you don't fancy scrolling through the entire thread (which let's be honest is actually more than half the fun, right?) then here's a summary: BC's hall of difficult to play bass lines [TO FOLLOW SHORTLY...]
  14. Doesn't get any more God-lyke than this does it?
  15. Funny thing is the DHL driver didn't even realise he had to collect the V7 in exchange for the P7 so I could now have been the proud owner of both!
  16. I always did think that RTFM was over-rated, just shortens the shelf-life of kit. Ignorance is bliss, right? 😁
  17. And then you get bored and sell it 😁
  18. Ouch!! That's gutting.
  19. Were you guys playing at Glasto?! What's the band?
  20. Part of me completely agrees with what you're saying. But it doesn't have to be either or does it? Alex Claber was a bass player before he started making Barefaced Cabs so was Doug at Darkglass and the list goes on... Bass is our passion and making great music has gotta be right at the top of what's great about it. Many folk simply drive cars, but car enthusiasts often love understanding the intricacies of what makes a car engine tick. And similarly getting into the detail of sound, frequencies, power, how it all comes to be produced and interacts in making for great tone even if it's only us bassists who can hear it or care about it and even then sometimes only at home and not in a band mix with ear plugs in! If someone finds enjoyment in taking electronic measurements and getting a deeper understanding of their kit that way, it's certainly not for me to tell them that their time could be better spent playing. Why seek to limit how far any of us take our passion for bass and what direction that might take?
  21. Interesting. How so in terms of the difference in tone? I must admit I wouldn't have expected a great deal of difference. If there is, I suspect that any difference in the pups are going to make a bigger difference to tone than the wood treatment. But the bigger factor, if anything, is likely to be wood and construction - you have a solid alder body in the 434/5 but alder /maple/alder laminate in the higher end models. Can't believe you found a 435 which you loved, for just £399 new, and which weighed in at just 9 lbs and have returned it!
  22. They do sound great. The pups are indeed close but not quite the same - a little higher end in the more expensive basses. YGD V5 (Alnico V) in the 434/5 YGD V7 (Alnico V) in the 734A/5A & P34/5
  23. Thanks Stew - not quite identical to the HB Iso5 Pro, which I'm using, which has all its outputs on one side and greater flexibility on voltages but with fewer outputs overall. The one you have listed is, however, definitely a clone of the HB Iso1 Pro. However if that Ammoon hits the spot (and my instinct is that I would only be able to use one set of outputs if I had it under my board and I was fine with just 5 outputs overall which the Iso5 provides for my mini board) then there's an even cheaper one on eBay
  24. That is serious praise indeed. I sensed that these gen 2 Sires were punching well above their price point and that comment certainly confirms it!
  25. Hardly a thread hijack. More like a good point! Only hesitation is aren't you going to knock a chunk of value off by making the mod, purely from the aesthetics, or will judicious use of PGs provide 'cover' should you wish to resale (obviously whilst not hiding the fact from a purchaser). Or is this a non point 'cos you're not planning on selling the bass ever 'cos it's such a good one. 2 days in I'm still liking mine - lol!
