1. I've heard nothing but good reports on Messa Boogie gear too but have never tried one of their amps
2.
It seems I'm one of the few people on here who thinks the sound of a P bass on it's own is a thing of beauty...
I reckon you'd find more than a few mate. I LOVE the sound of the P bass. It's just got that sound that you hear on so many tracks that makes my boat get floated!
3. The bridge in your picture doesn't look like it's too bad. I reckon a good wipe with pledge would bring that up
4. That's the thing I suppose. Our PA is a pretty heavy duty EV set up and can easily handle everything going through it. As I said , everything is through it, but the volumes are generally not too high, so it's a good balance but not oppressive to the paying public!
5. I feel for you mate cos I have the most corrosive sweat ever. I need to change strings almost every gig and bridge pieces suffer too. Try wiping with a clean beer mat between songs. That will at least keep the damage to a minimum, but as I say once it's eating into the metal, your not gonna clean it up completely. I've tried cleaning it off and had no luck.
6. I think once corrosion sets in to metal, you are never going to get it back to the original. I would live with it. It gives your bass more character!

I actually came on looking for scantily clad young women!

Never heard of them before but I like it !
9.
How we have agreed to rehearse is to learn say 5 new songs ahead of a rehearsal, then get it tight when we are together. When everyone bothers to do it, it works well. What actually happens more often than not is: - The guitarist will give them a quick play through an hour before the rehearsal and apologise because he didn't have time to learn them properly (amazingly, he finds time to watch every football game that's been on!). Inevitably he'll insist we drop one he doesn't like... - The drummer will have a listen to them in the car on the way to rehearsal. - The vocalist will either sing it fabulously or need us to change the key. Apparently she can't tell if key is okay until she tries singing with the band - can never know when singing along with the record! Frustrates the life out of me.....
That sounds exactly like us apart from the fact that I do the singing!
10.
Yep. A quick google for data (based on assumption that 10,000 members are male) would suggest 100 members would have paedophile tendencies. Key question here is would they gravitate towards a P or J or are they only interested in their Stingrays?
I seen where you went with that
11.
You'd be surprised how much of your bass sound is sent to the tops by the crossover.
Yip, but it's not going to blow your speakers as long as they are half decent, the real low register is handled by the subs. As I said before, you don't need to be ear splitting loud through tops and subs. You can have a nice balance, but still be reasonably quiet.
12.
Grab that Barefaced S12v while it's still available. It will happily punch the kidneys out of a drummer, while still sounding meaty at normal volumes.
+100 for the Barefaced! I bought a 2 x 12 after having used Ampeg 4 x 10 and Genz 6x 10 and it's a beast. The bottom end coming from it is something that has to be heard to be believed. You will NEVER get that kind of bass from any Hartke gear. It's quite simply the only cab you will ever need. I'm sure I read somewhere that Alex was offering a try before you buy service or something like that. He is that sure you will like it!
13. Thing is the term pub can mean a lot of different things. The usual place we play is quite big with a big bar in the middle. We have to set up in front of the bar with the PA pointing down each side. The place gets very busy, so bands have to be loud to compete with the shouting. This is why we go through a PA . If I was to stay out, bass would be coming down one side and guitar down the other. I agree, in small venues where you are right in front of the punters, by all means use a PA for just vocs, but if you are using subs, then use subs properly and get a nice punch. It does not need to be really loud to sound good, just nicely balanced. We also don't have a FOH guy but we are all experienced enough to set the levels and get a good sound

I think the flying V is one of the most iconic, beautiful guitars ever, but on a bass? I'm sorry, I guess I'm just missing something. I don't wish to rain on your parade, it's just not for me. Good luck with it right enough, you've certainly made a good job
15. For that money mate, don't get Hartke gear. In my Humble opinion, it sucks! It's a unique sound that you will grow to hate! There's so much better out there if, as said before, you try out in local shops. Thomann are great, especially for people who live away from city centre shops, but go for better gear!
16.
Why take subs at all though if you are not putting bass through the PA?
Exactly!!!
17. I'd say if your going to be loud, then definitely play through the PA with a quieter back line . If it's a smaller gig, then possibly just use back line with only vocals through the PA . We always put everything through the PA to get a balanced punchy sound . If the bass alone is not in the subs, your getting a localised sound which is gonna lose the power of the subs
18. I can't really see a problem with neck dive as, when I'm standing with a strap on the guitar and I'm playing the neck, it's never been an issue. It's not as if you are having to struggle to hold the thing is it ? Maybe I haven't experienced enough Gibsons to qualify an opinion but I did used to have a thunderbird copy and never had an issue with it
19.
This is a general outline of my relationship with the Precision and Jazz bass- January - Yep, I am a definitely a P bass man. February - this Jazz is awesome, it's definitely my go to bass now. March - Aw man this P is amazing, flats and foam! April - Heavy Weather! What an album! Where's my Jazz bass?.... May - Sugar Copper Blue, wow! Now that is why the P bass is my favourite bass of all. June - I hear Evil by Interpol, that Jazz rocks! July - 'Whats Goin On' playing on Radio 2.... August - I just found some Smashing Pumpkins bass tracks on YouTube... September - Bobby Vega... October - Wow look! Bob Dylan with a Jazz bass! They really are aesthetically pleasing. November - I just rehearsed with the P bass and I heard every note of every song coming through the mix - P bass forever. December - Ooh look! That Jazz on basschat for sale is cool, I am having it... (Divorce lawyer on the horizon) Repeat year upon year upon year!
This is why I have both. There is no real winner in the P or J competition. They both do nice things and do simple things really, really well
20. Get yourself into music shops Ben. The guys will be happy to let you try different basses until you find one you like . It's all down to personal taste after all and what floats one persons boat , may not be to your liking. It's pretty hard to find a really horrible bass if you spend a bit right enough, so as is with everything else, you get what you pay for.
21. That sounds like a nice piece of wood you've got coming mate, I hope it's all you need
22. Thanks guys, yeah she is the best. I wish I'd met her years ago instead of all the ones who were out for themselves or would laugh at my guitar passion. Thing is, she has been brought up with guitars as her two brothers are both really good guitarists, so she knows what it means to be a musician. I'm gonna definitely stick with this one, but what the hell can I buy her now to match this ;(
23. Thanks man, yeah, I had never thought of a Les Paul bass before, but this thing is lovely to play. The neck is great and I love the sounds. I've always been a Fender guy, but this is a welcome change!
24. I used to love KISS. When I was a nipper, but I realise they are big business now, but how can you slag off Gene, when it's the stupid public that pay for it? KISS we're never about supreme musicianship, but they worked bloody hard to give one of the best rock acts ever. If they make a bit on the side, so what? Name one artist that does it purely for the music!
25. I just can't believe it. For my birthday, my girlfriend surprised me with this beauty . I was totally gob smacked and realise I have a one in a million!
