1. Every time i take look a this i have impure thoughts about selling my Fender US 75 reissue to fund it! Good luck with the sale and have a bumpoh!
2. I like Sausage! Temporary Phase is a great tune. I also really dig that stuff he did with Bernie Worrel (Lordy what a player!) from P Funk and oh KFC bucket bonce on the 6 string annoyance. I noted the earlier comments about who's the best player: Flea or Les, Gordon Brown, Tomato Ketchup etc etc... well for what its worth i believe theres no such thing as who is the best bassists...there is just bassists (I felt i had Yoda influencing my thouhgts momentarily, please excuse me)....oh and emo bassists perhaps. Funny enough I was once asked who is the best best basser?.....i confidently replied 'Michael Schumacher' of course
3. I stumbled across this thread, got hypnotised by a Bot, got the credit card apparently and ordered....don't remember funkin any of it until i saw the email from paypal just...strange things these bots...what about a RoboBootsybot...i could dig that.....or Rastabot (Red,Gold & Green)....could well put me back in that hypnotic state again!!!
4. Good luck with your 5er venture matey! I've played some 5ers and found the low B's to be a bit 'flappy' on some basses and odd sounding across the strings, my old cricket bat Hohner B2A 5 springs to mind and also a cheapy Korean Spector that I once owned was similar. Having tried the 35" scale things were a lot better and the notes were consistent sounding on all strings. I feel Lakland have nailed this having previously owned a 5502 & now a JO5. I also remember trying an Ibanez SR505 a few years back and I really liked that and still have the GAS for one now. Having the low B though, has also been a god send for the Dub reggae stuff I do...I'm currently backing an artist called Daddy Teacha and his b-lines were all done on synth and go very loooow...lower than a 4er anyhow. However I find slapping on a 5 hard...but then I'm not very good at that anyway!
5.
You don't know how jealous that pic makes me....
Not as jealous as me mate...thats not my DB!
6. Sounds good...xxl for phat moi!
7. I have to say i found my Jeff Berlin Markbass 15" +15" ext cab. a bit of a one trick pony for me. Its been superbly great for the majority reggae that i play but i have been doing a lot of funky stuff with another band lately (weekly/festival gigging) and i am struggling to get the sound i like... although i do very much appreciate the lightness of this rig. As MrT knows, I also have an Eden WT800A and it is a great sounding amp but it has been far too temperamental to consider to gig lately and it sadly seems to be getting worse so have retired to bedroom use only . I used to gig the Eden regularly with a 6x10 but theres no way I'm going back to lugging that kind of weight again (i interestingly noticed over a period of 6 months how all my band mates suddenly had physical & mental health issues when it came to carrying the 6x10 speaker up flights of stairs or across muddy festival fields)...but admittedly the sound was sweet as with that Eden/Warwick 6x10 rig and i only ever dialed in the enhance knob for instant sounds. With my current Markbass rig I've found after much e.q. tweaking the best way to cut through my other bands funky/rocky stuff is to cut the bass frequencies rather than add treble for more top end, its probably seems a no brainer using 2x15" but alas it seems to do the trick (ish) but I'm still not overly happy with my sound - maybe i need a 2x10 me thinks-but skint as usual After last nights gig I'm also beginning to wonder if my old Jazz PU's were better than the passive Bartolini's that i currently use...also I'm very disillusioned by the passive Varitone that i have added - may just go back to the simple pots again! I too was a bit piss'd off after the gig soundwise but i think i got manflu too so maybe its that, time of the month, had to drive and couldn't drink etc etc blah blah - Anyone got the Samaritans hotline number....
8. Got any pics of the Yamaha?
9. Well i guess this is me, on "L" plates on the DB - (Not my DB may i add) & another one from a typical Circus gig!
10. Hi Guys, thanks for your help-i'll give it a crack tonight and performing it live tomorrow (without rehersal!) It's gonna be in a kind of funky style rather than a slow jazz.
11. PM'd on a possible trade sir
12. Ello folks, i'm not particularly jazzy but have been asked to do Summertime this weekend in A...i think the verse groove i'm kinda doing is something around A, B then C and back to B (In a kind of Moondance vibe), however i have no idea for the chords on the 'Fish are jumpin bit' and the 'Hush little baby'...i basically need a blaggers guide to the chords if that makes sense...the rest i'll funk up! Any help always appreciated!
13. Sad to hear your selling mate, i love my JO5. I don't think love or money would get me to part-these are truly great jazz bass IMO! Does yours have the Lindy pick ups? I think Lindy's are great. Good luck with the sale.
14. I dig the Bad Plus, their version of Smells like Teen spirit is awesome....with notes/chords on the edge of wrongness makes it perfectly right-they were on Jools Holland a couple of years ago if i remember rightly. Anyone heard of Backdoor?
15.
L Which Prodigy song is it?
Out of Space, Prodigy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Di9OBlcCiDk But i prefer Max Romeo's live take & Lee Perry does an entertaining version too!
16. Thats exactly the same as my 75 USA reissue apart from the decal looking slightly different, i've had impure thoughts about selling it too so i could fund a Lakland JO4 or DJ4...hmmmm
17. Being in a reggae/ska band i find people most often dance to all our tunes (mainly on Sunny days though!) but tunes that command some hardcore dancefloor skankin' are: Monkey man & 54/46 & Pressure drop - Toots & the Maytals One step beyond - prince Buster/Madness, strangely i see lots of air sax players! Anything by Bob Marley, but Stir it up usually does well and it makes me love the reggae bass vibe when i see dem booties shakin. Oh, and old time classiques Like Message to you rudi, Ghost Town & the Liquidator...all a blast and easy fun on the 4 string spank machine And one i love is I chase the devil ( I'm gonna put on an Ironshirt)...i love it when people come and say i've never heard a reggae version of that Prodigiy song....cha bumbaclot! Talking of which, Tru steppaz live @ Annabels, Plymouth, By the seaside (Englands Jamaica...with shootings n all' ) Friday 26th June 9pm>>>...guranteed Punanny & riddim'
18. Near my old hometown of Bridgnorth! Will be up for 2010...looks superb!
19.
This link may help a bit. If you're unsure about any procedure, get on 'tinterweb and research it. Read all about it and get yourself well informed about not only how to make changes on an instrument but also what affect those change may have. There's nothing wrong with going in the deep end as long as you can swim
Cheers for the link, that was really helpful. After weeks of gently sanding my bridge and moving it to match with the F holes I've got a really good action that i am happy with. Thanks for all your help guys. Now i have to find where to learn these hand stretches/positions before i develop bad technique. I could do with getting some lessons so if anyone knows anyone Plymouth way let me know. Lee
20.
I could tell you lots of boring stuff about the Antoria brand - but I'll keep that to myself, unless you're actually interested!
thanks guys for the info, yes please do tell me about Antoria, i am interested! Thats great to see the picture in the catalog and yes mine is identical. I've been trying to roughly date mine but cannot find any serial numbers or anything however i have not taken the neck off as off yet. I guess its early 70's ? I have altered the action slightly now to get the intonation in and its still very low if not the same/better than my USA Fender 75 reissue. The Antoria wiring may well need looking at though because when both volume pots are full on it drops in volume and has a 'bridge only' jaco kind of sound. With the bridge pot rolled back though i get a very lovely warm jazz sound which my Fender does not make quite as good. The tone knob on the Antoria however doesn't seem to do a lot, only very slight change. Hey Jon, just checked out your myspace as i check out other B/Cer's music every now and then to enlighten my ears -i dig your vibes man! I'm a big Gong/Ozrics fan so love trippy prog vibes!
21.
Nice, I'm watching this one on ebay. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Antoria-Jazz-Bass---...617184004r32524 Doh!
i saw that earlier and thought is it worth upsetting the wife for ? I'm really diggin the Antoria.
22. Picked up a 1970's Antoria Jazz bass on eGay for £112 - fancied something cheap that i didn't mind leaving in the back off my camper at festi's and something for a bit of campfire jammin with a battery amp, lots of booze etc. Well....to be honest I'm totally blown away with how well it plays and feels, very warm vintage jazz sound and nice neck too......And according to the seller this bass has history too as it was frequently gigged by some known talented muso in the North UK who fled to a hippy commune in the USA-name unknown though. So failed again in finding a rat bass for parties but instead got a vintage fake that fakes it far too well and sounds to nice to trash, let alone the history and age! Anyone else know much about Antoria's or have played one/ play one? I heard they were made in Japan and copied Fender, Gibson etc.
