1. Ello folks, i'm not particularly jazzy but have been asked to do Summertime this weekend in A...i think the verse groove i'm kinda doing is something around A, B then C and back to B (In a kind of Moondance vibe), however i have no idea for the chords on the 'Fish are jumpin bit' and the 'Hush little baby'...i basically need a blaggers guide to the chords if that makes sense...the rest i'll funk up! Any help always appreciated!
2. Sad to hear your selling mate, i love my JO5. I don't think love or money would get me to part-these are truly great jazz bass IMO! Does yours have the Lindy pick ups? I think Lindy's are great. Good luck with the sale.
3. I dig the Bad Plus, their version of Smells like Teen spirit is awesome....with notes/chords on the edge of wrongness makes it perfectly right-they were on Jools Holland a couple of years ago if i remember rightly. Anyone heard of Backdoor?
4.
L Which Prodigy song is it?
Out of Space, Prodigy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Di9OBlcCiDk But i prefer Max Romeo's live take & Lee Perry does an entertaining version too!
5. Thats exactly the same as my 75 USA reissue apart from the decal looking slightly different, i've had impure thoughts about selling it too so i could fund a Lakland JO4 or DJ4...hmmmm
6. Being in a reggae/ska band i find people most often dance to all our tunes (mainly on Sunny days though!) but tunes that command some hardcore dancefloor skankin' are: Monkey man & 54/46 & Pressure drop - Toots & the Maytals One step beyond - prince Buster/Madness, strangely i see lots of air sax players! Anything by Bob Marley, but Stir it up usually does well and it makes me love the reggae bass vibe when i see dem booties shakin. Oh, and old time classiques Like Message to you rudi, Ghost Town & the Liquidator...all a blast and easy fun on the 4 string spank machine And one i love is I chase the devil ( I'm gonna put on an Ironshirt)...i love it when people come and say i've never heard a reggae version of that Prodigiy song....cha bumbaclot! Talking of which, Tru steppaz live @ Annabels, Plymouth, By the seaside (Englands Jamaica...with shootings n all' ) Friday 26th June 9pm>>>...guranteed Punanny & riddim'
7. Near my old hometown of Bridgnorth! Will be up for 2010...looks superb!
8.
This link may help a bit. If you're unsure about any procedure, get on 'tinterweb and research it. Read all about it and get yourself well informed about not only how to make changes on an instrument but also what affect those change may have. There's nothing wrong with going in the deep end as long as you can swim
Cheers for the link, that was really helpful. After weeks of gently sanding my bridge and moving it to match with the F holes I've got a really good action that i am happy with. Thanks for all your help guys. Now i have to find where to learn these hand stretches/positions before i develop bad technique. I could do with getting some lessons so if anyone knows anyone Plymouth way let me know. Lee
9.
I could tell you lots of boring stuff about the Antoria brand - but I'll keep that to myself, unless you're actually interested!
thanks guys for the info, yes please do tell me about Antoria, i am interested! Thats great to see the picture in the catalog and yes mine is identical. I've been trying to roughly date mine but cannot find any serial numbers or anything however i have not taken the neck off as off yet. I guess its early 70's ? I have altered the action slightly now to get the intonation in and its still very low if not the same/better than my USA Fender 75 reissue. The Antoria wiring may well need looking at though because when both volume pots are full on it drops in volume and has a 'bridge only' jaco kind of sound. With the bridge pot rolled back though i get a very lovely warm jazz sound which my Fender does not make quite as good. The tone knob on the Antoria however doesn't seem to do a lot, only very slight change. Hey Jon, just checked out your myspace as i check out other B/Cer's music every now and then to enlighten my ears -i dig your vibes man! I'm a big Gong/Ozrics fan so love trippy prog vibes!
10.
Nice, I'm watching this one on ebay. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Antoria-Jazz-Bass---...617184004r32524 Doh!
i saw that earlier and thought is it worth upsetting the wife for ? I'm really diggin the Antoria.
11. Picked up a 1970's Antoria Jazz bass on eGay for £112 - fancied something cheap that i didn't mind leaving in the back off my camper at festi's and something for a bit of campfire jammin with a battery amp, lots of booze etc. Well....to be honest I'm totally blown away with how well it plays and feels, very warm vintage jazz sound and nice neck too......And according to the seller this bass has history too as it was frequently gigged by some known talented muso in the North UK who fled to a hippy commune in the USA-name unknown though. So failed again in finding a rat bass for parties but instead got a vintage fake that fakes it far too well and sounds to nice to trash, let alone the history and age! Anyone else know much about Antoria's or have played one/ play one? I heard they were made in Japan and copied Fender, Gibson etc.
12. lol...what a fun thread: Back in the day-Bootsy Collins (Rubber Funk) or Fred Wesley & the Horney horns albums with Bootsy on! Familyman in Dub - Aston Familyman Barret (heavy bass dub reggae) or as said earlier Babylon by bus (Bob Marley) Marcus Miller Live+1 (Jazzfunk) Wingful of eyes (Mike Howlett from Gong...beautiful music) or Gongs 'You' album Victor Wooten & Dennis chambers and some guitar guy, Geoff Howe i think...thats got some good bass going, bit technical for my standards though. Highlight tribe (Techno with Live bass) Backdoor ...if you can find an album (Drums, bass & Sax mashup) Squarepusher..Drum n bass with live & sampled bass bits. Any Culture or Burning Spear album...great reggae Ozric tentacles 'Pungent Effulgent' think i've spelt it wrong, timeless space rockdubstergroovers-any 90's Ozrics is a good place for melodic bass playing And finally any Kooks bass lines because when i listen to them i don't feel too bad on the bass. My good friend Max Rafferty lol...love ya Max (Booyaka)
13. Thanks for your helpful reply jonny-lad, really appreciated mate . Is the soundpost and bridge the same thing...i'm a bit confused there?...forgive my dumbness on the subject. My DB is a 1/2 size, when you refer to scale length do you mean the neck length? cheers
14. Hello DB'ers, I've recently sold my Stagg and tuck the plunge in buying a wooden bass, albeit a grade B cheapish Gear4music double bass that needs fixing up. I've got the bits and put it together now but not sure which way the middle wooden bridge goes?...it seems to slope down more on one side...would that be the E or the G side. I've also broken the E & A string upon tuning, i think the strings were weak crap quality ones so am ordering some better ones, they had been bent too!!!. Also does moving the bridge allow for lower action, my action seems really high...or do i file the bridge or similar? some of you old timers are probably cringing at my Q's but i literrally do not have a clue ...also if anyone know anyone who does set ups near south Devon let me know. Thanks in anticipation for your responses.
15. I had one of these on my Steinberger Spirit that i sold. There is a user on here called steinbergerguitars from the USA, he got it for me which was great of him, but it didn't come cheap! With the postage etc it cost around £50...a lot of dosh for a little metal hook - maybe a local metal worker could make you something up cheaper??? btw, got a Synapse soft case up for grabs if anyone wants to make an offer?
16.
Superstition intro... only the first 36 seconds, would have been nice if it was a bit longer but as I was playing I had no say in this.. anyway enjoy.. Mal
Great tune, i used to play this in a funk band and used to use an envelope filter or sometimes synth effect on the bass (even both at times)...was a really funky take on the tune in a Bootsy esq kind of way!

18. I don't usually do the big ups but someone buy this bass! I accuired a JO5 in a 3 way trade and i have to say it's quite possibly the best bass i've ever player (and i've played a few from taking the Mrs on vacations to music shops )-those Lindy's are superb...good luck with the sale, someone out there will be one happy bunny!
19.
Dammit, I wish I lived in Norwich, that sounds like one of my ideal gigs!
+1
20. I found jammin to a Funkadelic album helped me improvise...not that i'm great at it but i can jam-most of the time i wasn't bothering in learning the Funkadelic line note for note but rather something that i can groove along with the track. As George Clinton says "Free you mind and your ass will follow"....having said that most of the open mic nights i've been to involves self indulgence funkin around E pentatonic ...give me the dub anyday
21.
Also, we're always looking for gigs if anyone fancies a reggae party.............
Ites, Gwan blaze de fyah,.
