1. This is worth buying if you're into Country / Americana: http://www.amazon.com/STUDIO-BASS-MASTERS-W-CD/dp/0879305584
2. Love the bass part in this - Ewan Vernal with the original Deacon Blue line up: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cIc_Bz-Seu0
3.
I had one just a couple of weeks ago. I won tickets to see the Tedeschi Trucks Band at the Prudential Bluesfest, of whom I'd never heard. When I found out that were "blues/rock" my heart sank... probably having heard too many versions of Mustang Sally et al at too many jam nights. But I struck lucky, and when the second number started in 7/4 I knew that this was something more that plodding 12-bars. In fact I don't think they played a single 12-bar song. I bought their current album the next day and it's the first thing in a while for which I've burnt a CD for the car. Thank you, Prudential!
You won a watch there - Tedeschi / Trucks Band are one of the few bands I'd love to see live!
4. Last "name" gig I went to was Nik Kershaw at the 02 Academy in Oxford in 2012. I'm off to see these guys Saturday in Guildford: http://www.rufusstreet.co.uk
5. Have been reliving the past watching episodes of the Jimmy Nail drama series "Spender" from the early 1990's on YT. Apart from enjoying the show, I always liked the music played over the closing credits - I know Tony McAnaney (who played music shop owner Keith Moreland) composed the music, I always wondered who the bass player was who played on it. I think my money's on Guy Pratt as he played on Jimmy Nail's hit "Ain't No Doubt", but does anyone on here know if was him or possibly someone else?
6. It doesn't hurt to be able to read the dots - that would open some doors up professionally for you (Theatre / Cruise Ship / TV & Film scores). Learning to read can be a slow process, but it would be worth it in the long run (definitely something you have to do every day).
7. Just seen a post on FB that Tower of Power are playing at Koko on November 29th. Can't go as I've got a busy day that day and have to be up for work early on the Monday morning, but if anyone goes - have a ball watching FRP and that blinding horn section!
8.
Pastorius is great in that he divides opinion. At least you won't sit on the fence after hearing him.
True - if there's one thing JP wasn't, was mediocre..
9. I joined the SBL Academy a few months back, and it's re-ignited my playing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KcnXcU-lEog There'll be a link somewhere in this video that will take you to his website, and you can join it from there. Lots of bass type goodness in there .
10.
I bought Ed friedlands complete bass method he covers reading from the beginning and I've found it great. I would recommend trying to read daily even if only for 10 mins.
+1
11.
Hi All, The time has come, after ignoring the fact i cant read music for years I've finally decided i want to learn. Can anyone recommend a book or site i can look for to get me started. I've seen a few people mention the Stuart Clayton books for beginners but i cant seem to find anywhere that stocks them other than for a Kindle (which i don't own) Any help is greatly appreciated Thanks Alex
You can get Stuart's books direct from here in ringbound form: www.basslinepublishing.com Good books - part of the way through book 2!
12.
Yamaha basses have been solidly good for as long as I have been playing. Having said that, pretty much everything made by them from instruments to motorbikes and everything in between are spot on.
+2
13. I like the extra range a 5 gives you, and I probably spend most of my time playing in the middle of the neck rather than down on frets 1-4. Loads of guys sounding good on a 4 though - Pino, Scott Devine, Marcus Miller, Tal Wilkenfield, Will Lee as well as all the legends.
14. Thanks for your input guys, I'll be paying a visit to Maplins next weekend to pick this stuff up!
15.
Looks like that mixer has 4 stereo inputs all on 1/4-inch jack. One of those would be ideal for your PC. What you need is a stereo lead which is 3.5mm jack to 2 x 1/4-inch jacks. These are difficult to find so an alternative is a 3.5mm stereo to 2 x phono lead and a pair of phono to 1/4-inch jack adaptors
Ok, that's cool - I'll look into that and pay a visit to my local Maplins. Thanks to everyone who's replied
16.
Which mixer do you have Louis?
Hi Dave, it's the Xenyx 1002 model.
17. Hi all, Apologies if this has been covered in a previous topic, just not sure how to word it so here goes... I want to be able to link up my notebook to a two channel Behringer mixer so I can play along with a recording on Youtube. Main reason for this is that I want to be able to do everything through headphones as I don't want to upset everyone in the house or the neighbours? I've successfully been able to play my bass and use my drum machine through the mixer so I can practice through headphones, but I would like to be able to add the above option if it's possible? If it is, and anyone out there knows how to do it, that would be cool - if you can explain it like you would to a child, even better as I'm a bit slow at this type of thing . Mods - if this is in the wrong part of the forum, please move..
18. Scott Devine covers this topic in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ilh4uMAdss8 Hope this helps?
19. I signed up for the SBL Academy a few weeks back, and have to say it's well worth the money. I also signed up for the Groove Formula series, and I'll echo the OP's comments above. You only get out of this bass playing lark what you put into it, and he (Scott Devine) is doing a great job at teaching all this stuff online to anyone who's willing to make their bass playing that little bit better.
20.
I turned off when I saw two chavs standing by a laptop, one of them shouting.... I switched back a few minutes later to see some "band" called The Young Fathers.... I lasted about 3 seconds before I switched off and went to bed!
+1 Wasn't impressed!
21.
Determined to have a proper go at it this time after a few half-arsed attempts in the past. I know where the notes are on the stave / fretboard, understand key sigs, time sigs and note / rest values etc. but my sight reading skills are non existent and it's something I really would like to be able to do so I've started my way thorugh this; First couple of chapters down and not finding it too difficult to sight read through the exercises although I expect it gets much harder! Must stick with it and actually learn this time...
You've chosen a good book to start with! It's a very good introduction to reading, well laid out and user friendly. I'm part way through the Intermediate Book, but have hit a brick wall with the second chapter on semiquavers (16th notes). 30 mins a day should see you alright .
22. This is worth a look: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aZZS327EZ94
23. Like all of Ed's books, it's very good. He knows how to put a good bass tuition book together . Main things it focuses on are time/groove, palm muting, ear training, navigating chord charts, "gig survival", doubling on electric and DB. There's a lot of good info, and I'd probably say the split between text and examples is about 60/40. Well worth buying IMO...
24. Good idea, IMO you should put in a cut-off date for everyone to vote otherwise this could go on for a very long time! . Pino Palladino gets my nomination: Apart from the fact that he's one of the most tasteful bass players on the planet, he's also probably one of the most recorded bassists of the last 30 years.
25. Another favourite when I was a kid: http://www.youtube....h?v=QtvTE3m5jpM Y'all come back now ya hear??
