1. Outdoor gig, just about to start first song and thought I'd have a a quick sip from my coke can. Wasp stings my lip. Show must go on etc. At the end it looked like a punter has taken a dislike to my bass skills and punched me in the mouth. 😨
2.
Just listen to the whole session. Really both the band and the bass player are worth a good listen. Thanks Jules Davo
Your welcome. I'm really getting into scandanavian jazz. There's some superb stuff out there.
3. Great example of the 'p-bass can do anything' mantra. In the right hands of course... In this case it's a guy called Audun Erlien. I don't even own p-bass but I'm a long term fan of what these great machines can do in the right hands. By the way this is just great bass playing: no widdling... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GQqo_TybfnU
4.
Aw, come on..! Joni Mitchell..? Hejira..? Shadows and Light..? Nah, it's as close to perfection as we're likely to get this side of Paradise, surely..? :rolleyes
I came across Joni while looking for jaco many moon(dances) ago. She is now my no.1 favourite artist and Jaco's best work is with her imo, playing songs supporting vocals and showing amazing restraint (for someone who could play anything) and playing with with great sensitivity. That's proof of a great musician.
5.
+1. And I love all of that Joni period. Have you got Don Juan? Apparently Charlie didn't like the job she'd done on his stuff.
All of that period is immense and I'm forever a joni evangelist. I came across this yesterday which is an amazing document of the period leading up to the mingus album http://www.deezer.com/album/10969184
6. Mingus by Joni Mitchell is one of my favourite albums but every time I try and convert someone they just won't have it. On the other foot I refuse to accept trout mask replica is anything other than nonsense. Great cover though!
7. Proof that amazing music can be made without 'high end' gear... 'It's all in the finger darling'
8. I'll offer this for starters... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KxBkmMOh0Uc
9. Larry Klein with Joni Mitchell. AWFUL!
10.
I love his playing on the McLaughlin album but have never heard anything else from him. The thing about the JM Trio is that they rehearsed for nine hours a day for two weeks before they toured. I think most of us would do our best playing under such circumstances!
I think my arms would fall off after nine hours!
11. Great bass from Kai Eckhardt on a track from the amazing fretless guitar player cenk erdogan. I first became aware of Kai on 'live at the Royal festival hall' with John Mclaughlin a long long time ago... and I think he's amazing. Anyway, Enjoy! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JlgYaD_HL68
12. Great song, great bass tone. Max Bennett on a P-bass https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ionRca6THE8
13. Great for two octave runs. Much easier with a five. I hardly ever use low b or c which is what I used to think was the reason for having a five. Makes low F less of a strain. It's much more than just having a few extra low notes.

15. I sent a neo soul band wanting a bassist a recording of me playing along to their you tube clip without revealing my age. They replied saying that my playing was 'sick'. I then revealed my age and received no reply. I can only assume that they assumed I was dead at my revealed age! It's a shame it's like this but I was the same when I was starting out. Middle age quality musicians should just get their own sh*t together play some great music. There's enough of us about it seems. :-)
16. Prince? He would have done a cracking headline show, including a band!
17. I always at some point in any given rehearsal even for just a tiny bit play the Jaws riff, Sweeney and The Professionals.
18. When bass was included! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NiooaSGLwc8
19. Songs for a tailor, Harmony Row and Out of the storm are masterpieces. Brilliant all round musician and superb singer.
20. 'lead' guitarists have given me many nightmares through the years. The best trait for any musician to have, no matter their ability is to have the capacity to listen, which is what he seems to be struggling with. It can't harm to point things out in a constructive way. good luck
21. Just bought a Zon off Ian and everything went really smoothly. Thanks.
22. No worries. I have the fretless and it's excellent.
