1. I have never ever bought a brand new bass in thirty years. Just ask questions through ebay and then the answers are on record if there are any problems. It's always preferable to see it in person but not always possible. I once bought a bass of ebay without asking the obvious (pics looked fine) but when it arrived the neck was like a banana. I was a bit p****d off initially as I should have asked the question 'is the neck straight' but all it needed was a truss rod adjustment and then it was a great bass. The other thing to look out for if you are not a smoker is if it has been owned by one, The equipment will smell of stale fags and is a nightmare to get rid of.
2. Fan noise solved! Just fitted this https://www.quietpc.com/na-ds-60 and it is perfect. Heads up to John at quiet PC for sorting me out. Had to modify the connector but entire job took twenty minutes and anybody can do it. I'm really happy now. No more hifi bass with a hairdryer as an accompaniment.
3. The company that sold me the super silent fan are sending me another brand to try (for free!) after I told them it sounded just as loud as the original one. I'll try that but am seriously considering getting an inline on/off switch for it so when I'm noodling at home I can turn it off. Obviously while keeping a very close eye on heat when it's not running.
4. I think the G string suffers most with lighter gauges. D'addario chromes with a .50 G sound and feel great imo.
5. Just got a used one of these and I thought the fan was loud so I replaced it (straight forward by the way) with a top of the line ultra quiet fan with added insulation/upgraded gasket etc. The difference? Minimal! I think the problem is that the fan is probably amplified by the casing itself. Not noticeable in a band situation obviously but just slightly annoying when wanting to practice at home. At least I have a new fan... The piezo is a different matter. WTF with the horrible hiss?! It seems this is a consistent issue and I've read that others have replaced it with a low cost alternative(£12?) that has removed the hiss. I wonder how this could have passed any quality control as it just sounds defective. It is easily disconnected if you don't need it and therefore no more hissing. The mixture of the fan and piezo was very distracting. Apart from that this is a fantastic sounding amp that is unbelievably light. If only the fan could run at a lower speed when cool it would be perfect.
6. I once played the Camden Palace with an 80 watt TE combo with an 8 inch speaker. Was it loud enough as a monitor? Not quite! But all the other smaller gigs I did with that combo were fine, though admittedly it was cranked. Drummer, two guitar players, one with an AC30 and the other a fender twin. All of us understood that having a reasonable stage volume was vital. I also used to have a selmer treble and bass 50 that I did many small gigs with, Great sound!.
7.
Went to a jam session last night and there were THREE saxophonists there queuing up to play all over someone else's solo or step in at a particularly inappropriate moment. They didn't disappoint
Blimey! So after reading all the replies it looks like my next wanted Ad will end with 'No guitarists or Sax players need apply. One armed keyboard players (right hand in tact) welcome.
8.
After a very attractive young lady jumped up on stage and started dancing around the band members, our sax player announced 'I don't think that we should encourage that sort of thing, after all people didn't come to see her. They came to watch ME!' That statement alone should tell you all you need to know about sax players and the state of their egos...
Exactly! 😄
9.
What's the background to this show? It's almost like a Sondheim thing. Very interesting.
This explains it http://thejazzline.com/events/2015/04/esperanza-spalding-emily-devolution-tour/
10.
Do you just have a problem with them in general or do they exist in your band..? If the former, you can always avoid that band,,if the latter, then sort it or leave.
Just in General. I'd be out of there within 5 minutes. Sax and guitar are the main culprits for musical diarrhea in my experience. Just meant as a fun observation from a bass point of view and maybe why different characters take up different instruments. Bassists seem to be quite happy playing one or two notes in a given section whereas the above mentioned seem want to play all of the notes all of the time. That's why I love Wayne Shorter.
11. I just find the characters involved in these crimes very funny (after I've torn my hair out of course.) Give me Larry Carlton and Wayne Shorter in a Joni Mitchell environment and I'll die a happy man.
12. I think what I'm saying is that these are two that suffer most from the inability to shut up.
13. Who wins this horrible pointless competition? Both drive me up the wall and round the bend!
14. All (most) of the above! Plus... Sarah Vaughn, Barbara Streisand, Tim Buckley, Robert Plant, Lisa Gerard, Gwen Dickey to name a few...
15.
Thats very cool. Check her out on a fretless Jazz Bass.
Great!
16. I just loved this. Brilliant effortless playing with some performance lunacy thrown in for good measure. Either way, what a talent!
17. This is nuts in all the right ways. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OL-aRjjyQpo
18.
Looking forward to having a listen to this when i get home. Saw Garbarek and Weber together a good few times over the years with their own bands. Can't help but have a wee tear in my eye to see him still playing with Rainer Bruninghaus too...but no Weber. Ah well time moves on i suppose .. Ian
Weber was/is unique. Silent feet still amazes me. I don't think Bruninghaus gets enough credit but that's for another post😄 The sound on this one is top drawer. A good one for the headphones.
19. The first track (life without balcony) is just stunning. Not only does Yuri Daniel have to replace Eberhard Weber, he actually manages to make a Warwick sound fantastic (only kidding Warickistas!). Completely different type of player but really fits in beautifully IMO. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e6FefQgro0E Enjoy!
20. Good call. This is worth an hour of anyone's time. No widdling, just great bass playing and with an antigua P bass... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wU0d4FtYRjs
21. Bargain! Not so fashionable these days but Jools' hootenany bass player (Dave Swift?) played one on this years show...
