  1. Gonna need that on a T-Shirt before too long ha ha!
  2. Compared to what I used to pay for magazines, I'd say it's very reasonable - oh and you get to read my column every month too!
  3. Yes, yes, yes, it's that time again! This time, and, my next John Deacon build is firmly seated at the more budget end of the scale whilst still keeping to a reasonable likeness of John Deacon's late 60's sunburst precision bass. His main instrument that had its finish taken back to natural for a long period of time before getting a complete refinish around 1985 in gloss black with gold Schaller hardware. My last Magic Era precision, on reflection I should have probably kept hold of, but I am pleased to say that it is owned by fine bass chatter @Frusty. It's in safe hands! This time I have neither have a fabulous Fender bass to use or the like-for-like hardware, so instead sourced a very cheap original Tokai Hard Puncher from Japan and a bag full of gold hardware from some nice chap on Facebook that I bought before covid was a thing! Yes, the bass needs some TLC before I go at it with the new toys, but out of the box (after a 3 month trip on the boat) the HP bass plays incredibly well for a 42 year old all original bass. Of interested is the really resonant Sen body (Japanese Ash) which is of an acceptable weight and the insanely thin finish, which could even be nitro, by the way it seems to be crazing. Probably not though, I just like that it's real thin. Oh and the "law suit era" copy headstock to finish the Fender look. (Yes I know there wasn't actually a Fender law suit). I've also a superb EMG GZR Geezer Butler signature split P bass pickup for the install, though I have to say the original pickup is very good! This project is just a little bit of fun, but given how close these Tokai HP's are to "the real thing" it might just end up being a keeper, who knows!
  4. I've got a Modern 4 here now that I am editing a review video for as we speak. Super nice! I've asked for the five string to be sent through as soon as it's ready too.
  5. I've recently started recording all my own review videos for Bass Gear Magazine based in Ohio. Yes, I still write for Bass Player Magazine as I have been every month for the last (nearly) two and a half years, but I would love for you to follow this magazine and YouTube channel too!

  7. Ahh yes, thank you! I forgot all about the four knob version! I'm actually even tempted to trade my Spectracomp and HG Mini in for the full size four knob HG! *I just went to TC's website for a gander... OMG! Who did the website refresh? It's Ghastly!
  8. I'd love to own the roadworn version of the Fender Mike Dirnt bass, in the same colour scheme as your example above. I've played the rosewood fretboard version and really rated it. The maple board would be my choice though. I love the combination! Of course, Billy Sheehan's own "The Wife" bass is a 70's precision with a '68 "telebass" neck on it. Hmm, maybe my next, next DIY build should be a P with a tele neck! - But I've another bass to put together first when I have the spare pennies.
  9. Absolutely agree! Enthusiasm for all things bass rocks my world!
  10. I've not reviewed it yet either! I do have three Cort basses here I am shooting video for, they'll be live in coming weeks I hope, then, maybe I should track down Schecter's distribution for a word!
  11. The Helix and B|Amp are a wonderful pairing! I gigged with either or both many times! I've moved to the Neural DSP QuadCortex and am even planning on profiling my Bergantino cabinets in to the QC for when I won't be using backline. Technology is so much fun these days! I won't ever sell B|Amp. Maybe if I had an opportunity to get the MKII model, but really, right now, there's no need. I wouldn't mind an attitude bass eventually though!
  12. The Darkglass Hyper Luminal also has LED indicators as does the Empress Bass Compressor. Some have an LED that changes in brightness depending on "the amount of compression" too. I like the Trondheim Audio SkarBass which uses a three colour LED approach.
  13. I also really liked the Seymour Duncan Studio Bass and the Darkglass Hyper Luminal. Both very good compressors. An interesting contender is the compressor on the EBS Billy Sheehan Deluxe pedal. Another reason why I keep one, even though it's better known for being a drive pedal. A nice squishy "opto-alike" compression to fatten up the sound a bit.
  14. My mate Cici has just reviewed one:
  15. As far as single pedals go, I really rate the Spectracomp and the three knob compressor, Hyper Gravity for their multiband and parallel functionality. There are very few amplifiers (even effects units) on the market that can come even close to what the Spectracomp has under the bonnet when accessing the editor software. That said, there's just one amplifier that does compression the way that I need and thats the Bergantino B|Amp. It offered (blendable) parallel or series compression along with it's 4 band parametric EQ, HPF and LPF filters - and custom drive circuits. It would be my recommendation every time. Sounds superb!
  16. Thank you! Yes, I still have one, I'm keeping my slightly battered one! That's staying right here. Nice to see the SD Studio Bass in there too. That's a great comp!
  17. (Also has brand new strings fitted and the action is set low!)
  18. Specifications are like the newer model: https://www.cortguitars.com/product/item.php?ca_id=103020&it_id=194&page=1 but I am pretty sure that the fretboard is Rosewood on my model and the neck could be Wenge and Maple. Either way, I think a better combination. Ahha! Here: https://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_specialists/Cort_A6_Plus_OPN.html •CONSTRUCTION: Neck-thru •CUTAWAY: Double Cutaway •BODY: Figured Maple Top on Mahogany Body •NECK: 5pc Maple & Wenge, 1F 20.5mm, 12F 22mm •BINDING: N/A •FRETBOARD: Rosewood, 15 3/4" Radius (400mm) •FRETS: 24 / Large (2.7mm) •SCALE: 34" (864mm) •INLAY: Abalone Dot with Black Circle •TUNERS: Hipshot Ultralight Tuners •BRIDGE: Hipshot Trans Tone Bridge (6) •PICKUPS: Bartolini MK1-6/F & MK1-6/R •ELECTRONICS: Bartolini MK-1 EQ / 1v, 1blend, 3band, EQ on-off switch •HARDWARE: PT (Platinum) •STRINGS: D'addario EXL 170-6(XL 032~130) LONG SCALE 5ST • •COLORS: •A6 OPN - Open Pore Natural The bass is used and unlike my usual sales, it has dips and dings over it, especially on the leg cutaway but nothing that actual impedes playing. There are obvious patches where the instrument finish has become shiny through having been played but it has no mechanical issues. Electronics are also fine as I type. From a distance it still looks fine and its not as if you're going out gigging with an ugly instrument, but do not expect it to be perfect. Collection only UNLESS you arrange your own courier and insurance. I do have a decent shipping box to send it in, but shipping is your responsibility entirely.
  19. https://ebssweden.com/content2/new-ebs-billy-sheehan-signature-drive-deluxe/ I'm pretty sure you'll know all about this one. It's my favourite drive pedal. This particular example is my spare and thus has never been used. It's still in the bag, in the box with the included Y cable. I'd absolutely keep it if it weren't for rising debts forcing me to let some of my favourite gear go. Shipping is probably going to be around £8 Special Delivery mainland England delivery which I will absorb, anything higher will need to be added on - i.e. shipping further afield. Price reflects condition. (Lowest web prices ~£170 for this model, £215 for the Ultimate). Payment by bank transfer.
  20. My years of chasing a channel strip style signal path in my own bass gear has lead me to my fave amp, the Bergantino B|Amp. The parametric EQ, parallel compression and bendable drive elements alone are worth the saving of rack space. I must find a picture of my old "touring" behemoth with it's 10u rack! The whole lot fits in my gig bag now! If the B|Amp didn't exist, I think I'd be trying to get the Scheps Omni Channel Plugin from Waves or the UniChannel (which is excellent) from United Plugins working on hardware!
  21. EMG's PHZ is a passive P pickup with covers. I think I have a set somewhere but I have earmarked the Geezer set for an incoming project. >>> https://www.emgpickups.com/bass/phz.html <<<< Look at the Dimarzio Will Power P pickups too. They have tons of mid range and sound pretty good too. For something a little sexy looking and passive, Billy Sheehan's new Dimarzio Relentless pickups with curved ramped tops. https://www.dimarzio.com/pickups/standard-bass/relentless-middle
  22. Stereo Chorus following at least one high gain distortion pedal. On a restricted budget I'd say go for one of the little Zoom pedals and you'll be able to get a sound similar to this. Even the Zoom B1 and Zoom B1X models are good.
  23. Inspired by @niceguyhomerpost that was recently resurrected in to Zombie Thread status, I'm responding to this post simply because it was the oldest post I could find on BassChat. Childish I know, but I wonder what Basschatters will say looking back on their own posts in 2007!
  24. I've just been for a scroll through too and similarly reminded of some names I've not seen in there 'ere parts more recently!
