1. Thanks for your replies, I ended up going for the MXR script as it took batteries, should the power cable become detached by accident.
2. Damn, If this was 6 months ago I would have brought this, but I've got a similar on order from Bravewood guitars.
3.
Do LaBellas have silk at both ends, I thought it was just the ball end?
Just checked my La Bellas, just silk at one end, you are correct.
4.
I can't make it but can anyone tell me if the folks that make the ear moulds are there and the name of the company at all please? I spoke with them last year about getting a pair made but completely forgot the name of the company.... Anyone able to help?
It was 1964.
5. I went Saturday (yesterday) expecting there to not be too many people. Timmo Status also hand a left-hander on their stand. I also wasn't that impressed with Doug Wimbish, he can certainly play, I got up. Mark king was OK. I must be getting old as I thought it was a but loud. Stu Hamm was great and a funny guy. I thought some of the mini demonstrations on the exhibitor were more entertaining to be honest. As someone else mentioned, some of the basses that had high reviews and praise from various sources, were a little disappointing in the flesh. They look great, but some just didn't feel as good to hold. I was also in the market looking for a phase pedal, the only one I saw which could reproduce the sound I was trying to re-create wasn't available until mid April, I need one for next week. Oh well. Roll on next year.
6. I have no idea about effects pedals, so I after some input from you guys. I need a phaser (to recreate and effect on a bass line from '76) and have been looking at the MXR range, then I stumbled on MOOER pedals, which are cheaper, but are they any good. Any unwanted noise from them etc. I'll be buying of the net so won't get a change to try them first. What are you experiences with these brands?
7. I've used powered and unpowered but completely different brands etc. Powered you just have to consider an extra power cable as well as signal lead.
8. I have another thread I just started trying to work out brands from the silk on the strings, I have la bella which have blue windings. Could be those.
9. I'm trying to work out a brand a strings from the colour of the silk winding at the ends. In this case it's blue (and from the 70's) I think probably La Bella. Do any of you guys know other manufacturers that use blue winding at the end.
10. I tried rotosound flats, they lasted one gig due to being such high tension. I also tried pyramid flats (as the band I'm in had is endorsed by them) they only lasted one gig as well. So I've stuck with La Bella's. Those of you that use TI's how is their tension compared to regular roundwounds? Are the similar or slightly tighter?
11. I'm sure some engineers just want to show of the subs with a heavy kick drum. I'm an a early '60's shadows type band, the lead guitarist has sometimes pulled the cable from the kick drum mic just so the engineer has to let the bass drive the band rather than a modern kick drum. Although no kick on some of these bigger systems probably leaves a massive hole in the mix.
12. There is a good shop in Hilversum, which is a one train (and a few stops) from Amsterdam. http://www.connectionbult.com/wp/
13. Just read quickly your book on reading. I just got modern reading by Louis Bellson. Also interesting you comments on not using the metronome. You must subscribe to the school of Jeff Berlin on that. I also think it interesting that you suggest sticking with one piece until you can play it well then moving on, which is what I thought best to do. It's how I learnt piano, so why not on bass too! What levels of reading can you help with?
14. This web site has some TAB, you have to pay for it though. If it's something you desperately want, it may be worth it. http://www.tabman.co.uk I've recently tried to write out (in music not TAB) some of Jets lines from the Cliff and Shadows live at Kingston CD. He is on fire on that.
15. I once tried to solider wire to a tweeter in a speaker, I proceeded to blow the tweeter by having the soldering iron on it for too long. At least that is what I was told. I never tried to solder any again after that.
16. I sold a guitar strap to Paul. Quick payment and easy to deal with.
17. Sold a '62 Jazz re-issue to Mario (NoLogic69). He was very helpful and good communication and quick payment.
18. I go to a local Jazz Jam. I make a note of the tracks they do, so I can go over them during the week. After a while the same tracks keep coming up. As a result I've got the standards, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Early Ray Charles, Count Basie (mentioned above), John Coltrane and Charlie Parker, Charlie Mingus (Mentioned above) collections. More to be added. Like you I've only just started getting into Jazz.
19. Sorry to re hash an old thread. I recently received books I'd ordered (which weren't available for kindle). The Jazz Bass book, which is 12 pages, 6 sheets of paper. Lots of info in there, but she doesn't tell you how to apply it. Also I ordered Jazz improv, which is a more sizable book. However, first page reads : Material Needed, Pro's Jazz Phrases, Standards 1 and Bass video course or Jazz bass Tape and guide (got that one). Wish I'd known when I ordered it, as you do need the pro phrases book to apply what she talks about in the book. Both books came with CDs. when you watch videos of her being interviewed, you know she knows the info, as mentioned, she doesn't put it in writing very well. Probably best just to transcribe stuff, with the chord charts so you can see how it fits over whats being played.
