Heft - from heavy amp, or from lightweight amp & pedals?
Funky Dunky replied to Lozz196's topic in Amps and Cabs
Yeah the Rootmaster is a peach but a tad heavy. But you have to compromise somewhere, I guess. -
Heft - from heavy amp, or from lightweight amp & pedals?
Funky Dunky replied to Lozz196's topic in Amps and Cabs
This is very interesting for me right now as I'm about ready to buy an amp, and I know the tones I like - Mark Bass, Genz Benz, Ashdown, Aguilar, SWR - but I'm very aware of the whole Heft issue. I want a fairly light amp that I can carry without breaking my back....but I do not want something which has a thin tone - I contemplated a Rumble V3 but they seem a little thin. So here's the question - if I have a budget of £500 and I don't care if it's combo or separates, don't care if it's new or used (I imagine it would be used given my budget) I want 250-300w of oomph......what should I buy? Not looking to hijack the thread, so if the mods want me to start a separate thread for this, I happily shall. -
What a difference a string makes. DR Fat Beams.
Funky Dunky replied to bubinga5's topic in General Discussion
I used Dunlop Super Brights for about 18 months and loved them, they're amazing for slap and mine lasted me for ages (nickels) but found them too low in tension to dig in when plucking. I then made the jump to DR Sun Beams, and I love them for plucking but I actually found they go dead insanely quickly (three weeks or so). Thinking of coming away from nickels and going back to steel and may stay with DR - everyone talks about how long they last, but I found the Sun Beams a let down in that department. Maybe I"ll give Fat Beams a go. -
Hey guys, lighter fluid did the job. Really impressed with how well it removed all residue/stickiness and the bass is now smoother than Vader's helmet.

It's a corker of a riff and sounds great with a pick or fingers. As for speeding it up, the only way is to practice slowly and increase the speed incrementally. Look at the transitions - which finger are you using to shift, ie take off and landing? Look at your left hand and right hand in detail, get those transitions down slowly and work up to speed. I'm not really the one to offer great advice as I'm only an internediate myself, but that's how I tackled it.

Ooooh I like that!

Indoctrinating the nation's 5 year olds in funk and disco...
Funky Dunky replied to TrevorR's topic in General Discussion
I hadn't heard this, my 5 year old is more into Cartoonito and Nick Jr at the minute, but he does like the musical stylings of Jamiroquai, so he'd probably dig the theme tune to this, and the programme itself. -
Aye, big Jeffrey knows what he's doing. Great album.

What are you listening to right now?
Funky Dunky replied to Sarah5string's topic in General Discussion
Vulfpeck, and Jamiroquai. -
The intro smacks of a lazy rehash of Can't Stop. Great musicians, but I have no clue why they ever decided to persevere with the talentless, one-dimensional and lyrically constipated Anthony Kiedis. If 1991 Chilis could see what they would become musically, I think they might top themselves. I loved their music up until Californication. After that, with the exception of a couple of songs, they disappeared up their own bums a bit. The band just seems devoid of ideas these days.

Amazing! How do you rate it? Pros and Cons?

Incoming: Sterling SB14 bass - EBMM Sterling import... views?
Funky Dunky replied to goonieman's topic in Bass Guitars
I watched a video a few months back on YouTube of a guy playing a Ray strung with flats. Sounded pretty cool. -
Couldn't agree more. And got a gallery with your 16 Fenders? I'd love to see them!
I'll second that request!

Incoming: Sterling SB14 bass - EBMM Sterling import... views?
Funky Dunky replied to goonieman's topic in Bass Guitars
For me, Stingrays sound amazing but are just too darn heavy and chunky of neck. I'd take a Sterling though, no problem. -
All of these suggestions will be worth a shot if I can ever get the main body of the stickers off! I can't even get a corner to lift

Incoming: Sterling SB14 bass - EBMM Sterling import... views?
Funky Dunky replied to goonieman's topic in Bass Guitars
I really really really wanted an SB14 after seeing that very Ed Friedland review. The smaller body appealed to me, but I couldn't get a hold of one and ended up buying a SUB Ray4 instead, which has turned out to be a bargain. Still fancy picking up a SB14 at some point though, cracking basses, dunno why they didn't sell more. -
Thou shall not comment on Barefaced threads unless you; A-add something positive. B-Own and gig a BF cab. If you do not meet the above criteria you are; A-jelous. B-trolling. C-wrong. D-using it incorrectly. E-have the wrong amp for the cab. F-have the wrong amp for your chosen genre. G-have the wrong cab for the genre. :-D
All of this is true!

I play with a pick because sometimes the music calls for that attack. Otherwise, I use my fingerinos. Love the whole Bobby Vega/Cody Wright muted picking on bass.

https://m.thomann.de/gb/harley_benton_mini_looper.htm?o=0&ref=mrl_a_0&search=1462097480 Sitting at £42 with the current exchange rate. I'm torn between this, the TC Ditto and the Digitech JamMan Express XT. The Ditto appeals on the account of the Analog dry-through and the undo/redo, but the JamMan has a function light to tell you at a glance what mode you're in. Unfortunately three pedals I've mentioned only have one switch and I would much prefer two. What I really want is the Ditto X2, but I can't justify the spend.

ScrumpyMike - congrats, she's a beauty! Has a sort of Alembic look to it. Very nice
I did my homework on this one a while back since I loved that tone so much! Turns out it's a Carlo Robelli, which is the cheap entry level in-house brand from American music store Long & McQuade - probably on the same level as Harley Benton and Jack & Danny: I heard on a podcast it was strung with TI flats, and from a Reddit AMA the bass belongs to drummer / band leader Jack Stratton, as Joe only owns a Fender Jazz! I have a Sandberg Basic, which with the mids boosted and played into my Orange Terror Bass does a great impression of that sound. A 2-band Stingray would do the trick as well I reckon. There was a Tobias Growler for sale around here recently that had my interest that has an MM pickup in the sweet spot and a very similar body shape too!
GREAT post, thanks for this info. Wow, it's a cheapo? It's a cracking looking, great-sounding bass. I should be able to get a reasonable approximation of that tone with my Sterling. Unfortunately I don't have Mr Dart's hands, but I'll do my best with my own! Pity Vulfpeck are only doing London - had they come as far North as Manchester I would've travelled down from Scotland for it, but London's just a bit too far for a gig for me.

Some cracking tips here, thanks to all who chimed in. As for a cloth - any tips? Is a dry sponge with a frugal amount of cleansing agent okay? Better do this while I'm sober. Don't want to get confused and put WD40 on my sandwich by accident.

That was the clincher. I always watch SD's new videos and when I saw that I figured I reeeally need to check this Dart chappie out. Glad I did!! What bass is he wielding in the It Gets Funkier video?

Got the latest catalogue from Thomann through the door this morning, and to my delight, Harley Benton have made a loop pedal which appears to compete with the TC Electronic Ditto. Unfortunately, info is thin on the ground and there's no demo on YouTube as yet. It has true bypass, it has ten minutes of looping time with unlimited overdubs and can be connected to your laptop via USB to store your loops. Best of all, it retails for £44. Only problem is, I don't know if it has an undo-redo like the Ditto. Anyone know anything? I may have to buy one of these little blighters!

What is heft, though? Depth? Oomph? Weightiness of sound?
