1. I understand Buddy's point. Not my style of motivation, but Buddy probably faced that himself at some point and I don't doubt it helped make him the best. He was driven by perfection, and when playing to that standard, perfectly, in an ensemble, and your bandmates let you down, when you trade under your own name and people come to see that perfection, if your bandmates let you down, you'd be mad too. Whiplash is a fantastic film, and while you hate JK Simmons' character and side with Miles Teller, you see how it spurred him to become great. At that level, a bandleader seeks that reaction. Separate the men from the boys. It's kinda like "If you want it badly enough, you'll make sure you improve. If you cry, if you fold under that pressure, sling your hook and I"ll get someone in who can do it right." All that mattered to Buddy was the music, and being the best. Hugs won't always get it done. Was it over the top? Yes? Was it needed? I don't know. I'd like to think not. Have I lost any respect for Buddy Rich? Nope. Would I mind being spoken to like that? Definitely! FWIW, I would've quit
2. I've tried to do what Bobby does, and it sounds cool, but absolutely nowhere near as cool as Bobby's playing. He's amazing. Just a monster, monster, monster player. Cody Wright has a similar thing going, and he's fab, but Bobby is the daddy of pickstyle grooves.
3.
I do love it when he starts chugging with a pick and his legs join in - the epitome of groove.
There's a video of him on youtube doing a clinic, and he starts talking about Tower Of Power. He plays the bassline to 'What Is Hip?' Bobby Vega style, and the legs start going. Cracked me up so much I rewound it about twenty times!
4.
my trans red 02'
Niiiiiiice.
5.
EBMM finishes are great - a quick polish and they will certainly produce a mirror finish - especially the darker coloured ones. Talking of famous Musicman artists, it appears Timmy C has started to use Stingrays again - including a red one. http://forums.ernieball.com/ernie-ball-music-man-basses/62672-timmy-c-back-ray.html
Excellent. His sound on the first Rage album was stonking - really mean and aggressive. The intro to Take The Power Back still gets me every time.
6.
Is this what you seek? http://andybaxterbass.com/details.php?id=1008
Nearly, but not quite. Look at how glossy and contoured the one is in the OP. I want that.
7. Wow! Nice! Some of the Tokais were really, really good and this looks like one of them. Great condition, too. GLWTS.
8.
Not quite what you're after....... but a lot cheaper. The SUB Ray4 in trans red;
It is gorgeous, I almost bought one of these but I had already fallen in love with the Trans Blue. The difference is that I like the Sub Ray, so I wanted to experience the daddy, and that colour with the contours on the body just blew me away.
9. I think they're a weird company, tbh. Guitarists can have a signature model, but bassists cannot? And now they only offer basses in a choice of what is it four or five colours? Pfff.
10. It was a Trace Elliot Super Tramp. Think it was an 80w. Beefed it up tremendously.
11. I've never tried one, but they have a kind of Ibanez Talman look about them. They look as if they'd be bad for neck dive!
12.
And curiously Hoppus played a Ray before being signed up to Fender!
I did not know that!
13. With regard to Flea and MusicMan - what actually happened there? Did Modulus approach him? Was there a falling out with EBMM? Or was it something as simple as a weight issue as he got older? I was really disappointed when he switched, the Stingray sound was a huge part of the Chilis' sound and for me, it kinda coincided with the decline in the band's music. I understand Flea started using Wals in the studio, round about the time of Californication, too - is that right? Flea is the bassist I associate with the Stingray more than any other, even Bernard, and while he obviously doesn't consider my opinion when he's choosing an instrument, I really am not a fan of the Modulus sound - I feel that, by comparison, it lacks the weight and the grunt of the Ray and sounds almost tinny and light by comparison. I do think he should go back to EBMM, and if anyone has done anything for sales of the Ray since the early 1990s, it's Flea, and he should have a signature model. In an age where Fender give Mark freakin' Hoppus a signature model, surely there should be a Ray designed by Flea to Flea's specifications?
14. Thanks guys. I had a look at both, lovely, but I'm looking for rosewood board and contoured top, in A1 condition. I think it's going to be one of those ones where I could look at a dozen Trans Red Stingrays before I see "the one"! Fussy? Me?? Wee bit....
15.
Well when we recorded our album the producer got me to use a Sansamp. Now previously I`d had them and was never really happy with them. I used to try and get my sound from the eq on the pedal, with the amp set flat. The producers advice was get my sound from the amp, then add in the Sansamp set flat. I was dubious but we`d hired him based upon recordings we`d heard for other bands, so I went with it and the night after the recording I went and bought one, was that chuffed with it used that way. First gig we did with me using it another bassist, whose band we gig with regularly commented on it saying my bass was much meatier and more chest thudding than before. Only thing changed was the addition of the Sansamp. It really adds in a depth to the sound.
Thanks for this, most interesting. Back when I dabbled in guitar, I had a Sansamp GT-2 pedal which I found fattened up my sound. It had a different effect from a mere boost, it made the sound really full and warm. Any particular Sansamp you would recommend for this task?
16.
How about a heft acronym competition? I'll start. Habitually Expressed Facile Technophilia.
Hair-Elevating Frequency Trauma.
17.
Interesting views so far. From my own perspective, the only amps I`ve used recently that have that real "slam the sound into you" feeling have been an Ampeg SVT2, SVT3-PRO, and an Ashdown ABM (think 500 or 600). There was just a solidity to the sound that although I can get close with my Tonehammer 500 and Sansamp, it`s still not quite there, though the addition of the Sansamp has brought it much closer.
Without asking you to share your settings, would you mind telling me/us how the Sansamp helps with heft? This has got me extremely curious.
18. I would definitely say it's Trans Red, and definitely reckon you're right about the photo saturation being altered. Stunning looking bass IMO, jaw-dropping.
19. No no, I'm all about that bass. I have to have it, in that colour.
20. I'm glad I asked! Never seen that body on a Ray before (really!) What's the RRP on something like this?
21. I love this bass. I want it. The Facebook moderator for MM tells me ir's Cherry Red, but googling Cherry Red yields a bass of a sunburst colour. There's a Black Cherry Burst on the MM site, but it's significantly darker than this. Also, it looks like it has a carved top, or is contoured in some way and aren't Rays usually flat? Can't find anything that looks remotely like it on the MM site, and Cherry Red isn't an option among the colours on any of the Rays. Can anyone help identify this sexy beast?
22.
I bought the light gauge ones for my P Bass as I like clanky.
How does one get rid of clank? I have a Jazz Bass strung with .045-.105 DR Pure Blues nickelwound strings and it clanketh like Iron Man having a seizure. Is it the strings, does the action need raised a tad, or something else?
23. But bear in mind guys these are designed with slap players in mind, and as such they are the best strings for slap I've used in my albeit short time playing bass. But as I said on the DR thread, not so great for plucking. You need a featherlite touch or else things get clanky, and we don't like clanky.
24.
I had my vaccinations against heft many years ago.Thankfully, they have never failed me to date.
Heft B or Heft C?
