1.
Tony Franklin Fretless Precision following the NBD somebody posted on here
It is a sexy bass.
2. About three P basses - Carvin PB4 (or 5) G&L LB100 and a D Lakin Bob Glaub. Markbass SWR Seriously jonesing for a good Precision-type bass though.
3. https://www.hobgoblin.com/local/sales/products/HO56023/revelation-p-bass-guitar-metallic-red/#BrandDivLink I think that is bloody lovely! Wish I could hear soundclips. Nothing on YouTube other than a demo of a Revelation Jazz. But what a lovely looking bass.
4. Probably like hen's teeth, but I'd be looking around for a used Carvin PB-4 at that price point. Failing that, the Squier CV range is, by all accounts, fabulous. I particularly like the blue one .
5. Oh God no, I didn't mean it like that! I said "nosey parker" as a punctuation, most definitely not an insult. I'm 39 and kinda poor. I'm not proud of it. I have no wish to be cheeky to anyone on the forum!
6. I'm going new simply so I can put a head and cab package together and pay it up monthly. I don't have a great amount of disposable income but I have a steady wage. Nosey parker.
7. And that's the ceiling. Ideally under £300. I'm looking for a nice, light 2x10 cab, new rather than used, to pair with a Markbass Little Mark head. I'm new to separates, always rocked combos. What can people recommend within those parameters? Thanks
8. This still here? I thought this would've gone, rapid. Somebody gon' get themselves a bargain. Step right up!
9.
Youtube these days is full of players with spring loaded thumbs and fingers like a threshing machine.
That's fantastic!
10. Just to reiterate...Paul Turner is a proper, proper good bassist. I watched the video of him with Rob 'Arris and Derrick McKenzie and Daniel Pearce, when they had Shuffler on the go...jeez....blistering, flawless rendition of Rhythm Stick segueing into Alphabet Street. ....just upsettingly good. They also did a sweet version of Cee Lo Green's 'Forget You' which is well worth a listen. I'd cut off one of my nuts to be able to feel and fill like PT. So so tasteful and musical.
11. Paul normally uses Aguilars, but I think he could run his '66 Jazz bass through a mouldy old sock and still sound incredible. Delicious tone. Incredible groove bassist, too. One of my very favourites, no doubt. His line on Jamiroquai's 'All Good In The Hood' floors me, the tone is spectacular.
12.
I've four kids to boot.
That's shocking. Discipline gone too far.
13. Ah, but green basses have been scientifically proven to sound better, on these very pages no less Wish I could find that thread, 'twas fascinating, although very much tongue in cheek. I happen to think some green basses look sexual, but to each his own. Not a fan of white, m'self, unless it's a JB with a tort guard. All other white basses give me the heebs.
14. I had a Squier Troy Sanders Jaguar and it sounded killer, was a beautiful silverburst finish, too. But it looked like a piece of stood-on chewing gum. It had to go. Someone on this very forum said "your bass should look so good that every time you go to walk past it, you want to pick it up and play it." (Words to that effect) I have a PINK Jim Deacon Precision copy, and I want to pick it up and have a slap at it every time I pass. That's a Jim Deacon! Looks VERY much matter to me. Playability is important, hell yes, but your eye is the first thing to be tempted, isn't it? The aesthetics of the instrument are where the desire lies. This is why so many of us drool over pictures of basses online! The Flea Jazz bass thread is a case in point.
15.
Have you tried Fodera nickels ? Not unlike the Sunbeams.
I haven't, mainly because I've never seen anyone endorse them. Any good?
16. Damn I want this. Bad timing for me. Sorry mate, would love to take this off you.
17.
If all you own is a Hofner Violin bass and a vox amp , you'll never sound like Chris Squire. Gear is extremely important to tone. To suggest otherwise is absurd.
Amen, brother. CONTROL is all in the fingers. The fingers are definitely integral, I ain't disputing that - they create certain nuances that undoubtedly shape the end result. But the old adage that "tone is all in the fingers" has always seemed crazy to me.
18.
I also chased that sound down and found the answer in a Sandberg Basic (single sweet spot MM pickup, slight treble cut, slight bass boost, big mid boost... but actually sounds fine in passive mode too) with TI Flats (which I believe were also used on the track) into an Orange Terror Bass! The OTB has just the right amount of wool/compression/dirt to make that bassline bounce.
Flats!! D'oh! Of course it is! *facepalm* Could I get close by firing a piece of foam under the bridge? Hmmm..... Thanks for all of this, it will help immensely. What does one mean by the right amount of wool? Makes me think of a muffled sound.
19. I know a lot of the tightness is down to his fantastic muting and control, but it sounds really fat and punchy too!
20. The comments on that video are ace!!
21. https://youtu.be/yKg_3kyIhHc (With apologies to Horizontalste for "borrowing" his concept) Vulfpeck's Joe Dart - love the guy but info on him is slightly thin on the ground. His bass tone on this track is wicked, I love it. I don't know what he uses other than Fender P and J basses, but some digging has led me to learn that this track features a cheap MM copy! So the question is....settings. How is it so beefy and tight sounding? Ton of compression? Any help would be appreciated guys, cheers.
22.
Derek Forbes - Simple Minds/Propaganda - Brilliant work with Simple Minds from the bands first 6 albums, both fretted and fretless - lovely rolling lines with some slapping thrown in.
Great shout. Always has a great tone, too.
