1.
The Tonerider TRP1 is supposed to be exactly the same as the pickups fitted to the Squier Classic Vibe P basses https://www.amazon.co.uk/Tonerider-TRP1-Precision-Plus-Pickup/dp/B0050YRJXW
I've written to them twice and asked them to make a demo vid with this pickup but they're totally blanking me. They only have videos of the guitar pickups. The pickup in the CV Precision sounds reeeeally good - the general consensus is that the Squier CV Precison is a fabulous bass and the demos of that bass certainly back that up. It sounds better than some Fenders! I can't get verification that it is the Tonerider pup, but yes, that pickup is on my shortlist. It's crazy cheap.
2.
Ask Kiogon for a solderless kit and you can just screw the pickup and bridge earth in place without having to solder a thing!
I swear I don't even have the ability to do this without ruining something I've just learned that I'm receiving a tidy sum in vouchers for the music store of my choice. I will use these towards getting the work done. Looks like I'm going with Wilkinson bridge and tuners, the pickup is still very much up in the air. I fancied a Bareknuckle but I just heard Andy Irvine's 1976 Stagg P with a Nordstrand in it and wet my pants. Unfortunately that would put me over budget, so it's back to the drawing board in a bid to find a vintage sounding Precision pickup under £80. New or used doesn't matter...
3. A simple groove, but a peach of a groove. Love the bassist's tone. http://youtu.be/mhJRpI4sscc
4. I'm a member! I've only been a member for five minutes, though. And only because I followed the link you posted! Thanks, this looks right up my street. Andy Irvine is a great player, has some really nice funk techniques, and loads of enthusiasm for bass.
5. Ex was supportive, encouraging, let me practice unplugged when we watched TV and never once complained. I think she liked it. She never once said stop or "go and play your bass" - she would say "go and get your bass". Asked questions, too, like "Did you just make that riff up on the spot?" Current partner doesn't say much but lets me keep my amp in the living room, hasn't complained yet and even offered to buy me a BIGGER amp for my 40th! It's early days though, the truth will out at some point - be it good or bad.
6. Tim Commerford, he of Rage Against The Machine and Audioslave, said in a recent interview that he uses the Jamerson one-finger approach most of the time, occasionally adding a second finger when needed, on faster passages. I'm strictly two, occasionally leading with one finger. I do a fair bit of raking in my playing just to add colour to it and that's one-finger business. I'm self-taught so I don't have any tips as such, but I can say that I just sat night after night alternating between the two fingers picking chromatics and scales until it was...um.....deep and crisp and even, I guess. Somehow, it became intuitive to me and I jump in and out of one and two fingered approaches so often that I barely think about, it or even notice. But I lead with two for the most part.
7. People don't go out at weekends the way they used to.
8. Ah come on, it's not that bad. It's helped me learn a bunch of stuff.
9. Some cooooool stuff going on there for the first wee while, but he lost me toward the end. However.....I now want an Alembic. They look like something your grandad would play, but they sound rather good for that tight fingerstyle funk, no?
10.
I'll get me coat.
Or goat...
11. I have an app called Loopz on my phone. Pretty limited but handy for jamming.
12.
Thanks for that - any chance of doing 'It Gets Funkier'?
Another request for IGF here
13. I'd be tempted to investigate Lakland and Sadowsky.
14. Yarr. I think he's a terrific metal player, and I'd bet decent money that he can do a lot more. A real student of the bass, and he got a terrible time from many quarters for not being as flash or flamboyant as Cliff. Proper gearhead, too.
15. Oh my, this dude has taste. http://equipboard.com/pros/jason-newsted#bass-guitars 9 Sadowskys. NINE! http://www.metallicaworld.co.uk/jason_newsted_equipment_list.htm Edit - I clearly cannot count. Mr Newsted has TEN Sadowskys.
16.
I had to cut the nails right down on my right hand to get the muted notes to sound right. It's those muted percussive notes in between the actual notes that seem to make the whole bassline make sense
This. Absolutely this. His playing is packed with ghost notes and staccato, clipped notes....just so much feel and articulation in everything he plays, no wonder the guy is constantly bobbing his head - he's a one-man groove machine!
17.
I've been working on a new funk band and one tune we're trying to cover at the moment is Beastly. The main bass line sounds so simple but as soon as I started playing it I was stumped by the timing. I think I've got it now, but it's really made me pay attention to his timing. It's just so perfect! I was trying to find other players to inspire me, but I find them all inferior compared to Joe Dart. Am I in love? Is there anyone who can compare?
Similar thing happened to me with It Gets Funkier. I can play those notes, but it doesn't sound like when Joe does it! So many accents, it's hard to master.
