  1. He frequents these forums regularly, you could just ask him here.
  2. I agree with the real luthiery thing, but I think you would be surprised at noise levels. A 2 year old is way louder and more intrusive than a thin acoustic guitar unless you are really going for it. Speaking as someone with a 2 year old next door!
  3. We don't bother if someone is missing, we continually adjust when we can get together on a day by day basis and then turn up together or don't bother. I guess it depends, if you are a 13 piece with horn section then it is probably easy enough, but if there are only a few of you, there isn't much point
  4. How about a thinline acoustic - a decent volume for yourself, but good in a flat.
  5. Yeh, my first thought was they are ruining the chance of people doing a search with that name! Not my sort of thing really but very well done.
  6. Not sure if anyone asked, but why two?
  7. Yes, it certainly looks like the previous nut had some problems!
  8. Any pics of what they look like?
  9. I am guessing that even the budget option is expensive?
  10. oh if you don't then let me know, I will get it off you like a shot. I see no reason why you shouldn't like it though, they are handy things if you are ok with the spacing and the fact you are always 2 frets further up the neck than you think!
  11. I have a 12 string I have to redo the headstock for. I have a paulownia P bass body that I want to add a thin 5 string neck on. But what I really want to do now is make a bass completely including the neck. That seems like the bit that seems like the hardest thing to do for me, so presumably a complete neck through something!
  12. Most (but not all) is one of those two types, yes, but which one of those? Can make an assumption on what is there now, but easier to saw which it is so it doesn't get done wrong.
  13. Cool - good find. I just had no way of getting to reading any time soon! I was looking as I am going to sell my 4 string and get a 5 string, probably one of the new steinberger ones. Aliexpress is a possible source of 4 string bridges, which would give you the one that is missing.
  14. There is no 'standard' for On On On switches, and no standard for wiring colour on a humbucker, so hard to say. Can make an assumption based on your diagram on the left that red is hot, black is ground and white and green are the other ends of the coils, but without knowing for definite it could be wrong.
  15. So today I redid the wiring as it worked passive but not active. Some idiot had swapped the in and out wires round! I put the back on, I put the new machineheads on, I put the knobs on (of which one is nice and the other 4 will be replaced). I made another scratch on the front 🙄 I adjusted the bridge, I put strings on, I played it. For the first time active (played it passive on one pickup before!). The pickups have a high output, and that is on normal mode, in serial the really have a huge output. In single coil a lot less but still sound quite full. The bridge pickup is very bassy, more than I thought it would be, the bridge a little less so but very clear. So happy with these pickups (they are cheap). And even happier with the switching, it gives a clear difference in each mode. So thats it, pretty well done. I will gig it next week. There are a few rough edges, both literally and figuratively, and a few things that if I had known then I would have done differently. I need to do the frets, there is a high fret at about 23 choking off some strings, and I need to do intonation and stuff, but no big deal. Where I am very sweaty in this weather, the red seeps a bit - maybe some wax or something? But honestly, I couldn't be happier! So here are some more gratuitous photos, just because it seems a good way to finish a thread.
  16. If you don't have your woodworking skills I can assure you that woodworking is very much the most of it!
  17. There is always someone that has to take everything to extremes!
  18. Yes, sadly you would have to remove the top two frets of the neck, which is going to get messy! now I think of that formula, the rule of 18 (where 18= 17.817153, but that’s not very snappy), a 30” bass would be the same as a normal 34” bass tuned down a tone to A, and that works fine
  19. I got an 'interesting' bass recently, a 12 string which I assume is of chinese origin. The previous owner had replaced some of the machineheads with better wilkinson ones, and as the thing was £50, that seemed pretty good for at the worse case, 12 machineheads, 2 pickups and a 12 string bridge! The nut (posted on here elsewhere) was useless so I threw that away. Trouble is, I went to move the machineheads around as they are in the wrong order, but the holes are also in the wrong order. 12 strings are just 4 courses of 3 strings, which go small small big, small small big, small small big, small small big. As can be seen from the picture, that is fine on the left where from bottom to top they go small small big, but when you get round the other side, that is a mirror image of the first, so it goes big, small, small. Is making the hole for the current big ones smaller just a case of throwing a dowel in there, and then drilling it out when the glue has dried?
  20. Pretty well as the title, considering that some people here say that increasing the scale length by 3% to 35" makes the B string work much better on a bass, what happens if you reduce it to 30" - does it work ok? I have had a few Bass VI style instruments, such as.. well, a Bass VI and an Ibanez SRSC6 which were ok for an e string and thinking about it, a SS squier Jag that was also ok, but nothing with a b string. So what is the general opinion of those who have tried them - any good or is it a string too far?
  21. Gonna bit a bit tricky to dance to. I think it’s because of the saxophone!
  22. Oh don't get me wrong, I think they are a work of art, with or without the xlr, just seemed an odd placement. They look very solid, never had a chance to play one. For me, combine the wood of the top one with the string count of the bottom one, we are talking! Oh and throw in the LEDS, I would always like those, because in my book if you don't want them you can turn them off, and I am sure when I played Jims Status it sounded better with the LEDs on!
  23. We do abba, so that is why that doesn't cause a problem for us. One of the heavy songs, I use the full distortion for that one. We get that quite a bit. People get a bit annoyed with me - "Do you do any oasis", "Who?", "Oasis!", "Sorry mate, never heard of them", "Dont be stupid, you know - lateleeeey.. gonna be the one that saves meeeeee...", "Nah sorry, doesn't ring a bell". I really really detest oasis! On the other hand, one guy at the last gig was really insistant we should do Hazel O'Conner 'will you'. Doesn't strike me as a good song for a party / dancy band like us.
