String gauges and how they can affect playing style and tone
Woodinblack replied to Punkviking's topic in General Discussion
I use .045 to .130 on most of my basses (apart from the 4 strings), and that seems to cover everything. Except the stick obv.. that has .008 to .118s -
Played 2 gigs yesterday. One was a very poorly organised outdoor gig with a well organised truck and PA guy to set up playing on a truck. Had the best sound we have had according to the second band who saw us because we started late. The PA guy said "I don't think it is going to be busy, he hasn't done any advertising', and it wasn't busy but it wasn't surprising, there were a lot of local events on that afernoon that had been well organised and planned. Still worked out fun though. Anyway, the PA guy said 'you were great, you should have been the closing band for the atmosphere' but we coulnd' tbe because we had another gig that night. Trouble of playing in a suntrap is you can get sunburned and I did a bit. However, still like playing on a truck, especially one with a great PA that is all set up for you! The second gig was in a working mens club and as it turned out, it also went really well, and as a first, we actually got thanked by the venue organiser. so that was nice.

Dodgy deal via Gumtree? PayPal protection??
Woodinblack replied to solo4652's topic in General Discussion
I find it worse than odd, I find it a bit disturbing. For every guy asking about a scam on a forum and being warned off there have to be 10 guys who are just saying 'oh an extra £50, thats good' without thinking 'why would someone want to give me an extra £50 that I didn't ask for?'. Which means that these people must be hugely successful, to the point where there must be a load of guys for whom this is their sole living. -
Dodgy deal via Gumtree? PayPal protection??
Woodinblack replied to solo4652's topic in General Discussion
How odd. My wife who uses PayPal in her shop has done tens of thousands of PayPal transactions, of which a few have claimed they didn't get it. All of them were judged in her favour when there were issues and she had proof. -

Paypal protects you sending stuff if you have proof of delivery to the registered card address. All other bets are off -
I think the NS Stick is more suited to someone coming from a guitar only world, but one think I like about the stick is that it is different, it forces you to do different things. I have the advantage of starting life on the piano, but spending most of the time since teens on a guitar. Its still in the 'little too different' group, but I was just randomly playing it yesterday, without any concious thought of trying anything, and it was starting to make some noises that weren't too unmusical!

My elwood I ordered with hipshot ultralites, just because it was a chambered 5 string so there was always the risk of being head heavy, so it was to get round that. I don't know if it would have been but I don't regret the choice. My haussels were good too, although I got a norstrand P Bass pickups, because I like nordstrands and it was reduced since.

I started the zoom thread and I haven't got one of those yet either!

I guess you must have mentioned or clicked on something - I have never seen that guy before. -

I've done a very stupid thing. Ebay bid dilemma
Woodinblack replied to a topic in General Discussion
I object to that. I do not have a ridiculously expensive haircut! I must admit to being in the "not surprised but a little disappointed" group that so many people are happy to renague on a deal just because everyone else does it. I certainly flag them up as a non paying bidder or a non selling seller when it happens, and have my selling settings set to not allow anyone who has more than (whatever the minimum) strikes against them is. -
The SB8 would be interesting, but I am not sure that is sufficiently different from a bass really. Or I guess if I was going to go that way the NS Stick would probably be more appealing. I would certainly like a stand. I am still getting the strings to a place where they are happy. And learning chords.

I would buy it and at some point later sell it at a large loss. Works for me But if I have got something on ebay I buy it, sometimes it is a good reminder of that the only reason to put a bid on anything on eBay is if you are prepared to pay the amount you bid for it. So what is it? A 6 string something for £225 doesn't sound the worse thing that can happen -
Is this the weakest line up ever for Glastonbury?
Woodinblack replied to Barking Spiders's topic in General Discussion
My friend was raving about how good it was, have to see it at some point -
Mine is on my pedalboard, which is a shame when I am not using that at practice as I keep tripping over the lead. The position of the transmitter never affected anything, but as it is one of those with a hinge (has to be said, quite a weak one) and I have a load of ibanezes, I have always just put it on the strap or on my belt.

1) no - that G string too close to the pointy bit on the headstock and the A string too close the other way 2) no - just looks like you forgot to do the bolts up. I have a headstock in my shed that looks a bit like that! (but worse as there are 12 of them)

If the looper is your main thing, why not get a headrush looper, cheaper than the helix, but a dedicated looper. If it was me for at home, i would just get something like a Zoom Z1-four and a boss RC300 / 505 And yes, the stomp is too new for anything else yet.

To me square looks better.

No, hoses just don't last as long as they used to! -
I would say 2.5 hours to 3 is the standard here, although I have rarely paid for a rehearsal (directly!) and when I have it has been a tenner - and it better be a nice place for that! Or be different in some way. We save that for the gigs. Although to be fair, the guitarist never turns up drunk. Yep, sounds about right. ok - that is a new one on me!

In the same village, it had a quaint little country school, so if you didn't leave for work before school time you couldn't move for 4x4s parked across the roads and driveways, the village was also only room for 1 car width in the main road, so that was often blocked, and you certainly didn't want to walk, that would have been lethal. Nothing more dangerous than a pack of middle class mums in land rovers who aren't paying any attention to anything. -

See now how can you take anyone seriously who says that?? In a village I lived in, yes, someone bought a house and then complained about the bells (although not sunday, wednesday bell ringing). Didn't get far, I think the answer was 'did you not notice that large church?' -

Woodinblack replied to NancyJohnson's topic in General Discussion
No, its cost. A place near a venue is going to be cheaper as it is near a venue. People buy the cheap house and then complain about the thing that made it cheap, get the thing closed down, nice house cheap! -
That doesn't seem uncommon for a lot of people. I think if mine gets to that point I will just sell it, as they are quite expensive things. Currently I am still in the learning if I can do anything with it stage. I noticed the one on ebay, don't see many of those and it seems all of my watches are still in place!
