1. The pawn shop or the 64 reissue???. I'm going to order next week. And I'm still debating the merits of both. I think I'm leaning towards the pawn shop due to the finger board radius. I think I could argue for and against on every other aspect. The reissue are Japan made I believe and the pawn shop is made somewhere else Mexico?. So please help me decide. Or as an after thought the squier version would no doubt be acceptable for my needs.
2.
Make sure when your new Bass arrives the first thing you learn, ( if you don't know it already) is " Mustang Sally"!
Lol. I like to name my basses and decided im going to call her Sally and I shall certainly learn the tune too.
3.
You missed the implications of my post but never mind If you played guitar for 7 years and you couldn't learn some chords and change quickly between them, there must be something you are not telling us - for example, that you are actually a Venezuelan Poodle Moth.
Lol I might of missed your implications but think you missed my sarcasm lol. I definitely missed the implications of a poodle moth I looked it up and still missed your implications of the moth.
4.
I'd suggest that if your fingers are where you'd prefer a couple of extra inches, you should have been a guitarist
Cant make chords or change quick enough lol played guitar from age 11 till my late teens. And i wasn't happy then either haha
5.
That's a good point, actually. Action, relief and string gauge all have a part to play. If you get a tutor, ask him to check your bass over and suggest any adjustments that might help. I mean, here we are worrying about finger-spreads while your action might be high enough to limbo dance under.
I set up my own bass and i don't get any buzz (can't stand it), and while i have a med to high action its certainly not high unless 2.5 to 3mm max is abnormally high lol. My epiphone eb0 is a nightmare to adjust when i change from flats to rounds or to different gauges, that 3 point bridge looks cool but is infact crap
6.
You shouldn't be stretching anyway! You should be moving your hand so that you place your fingers over the right note. Have a listen to this. No stretching here.....
Yeah thats pretty much how i play, and i guess i could play that too. However in some songs moving your hands rather than stretching or having fingers close doesn't seem to work as well. I honestly am very critical of myself. Ok this is what started it of i watched a learn to play vid of how to play the clash london calling. ok in the vid the guy stretches from the 7th fret on the A string to the 10th on the A string and does a triplet. which works well however i can't get near making that stretch so move my hand and that millionth of a second to me ruins the timing, and to me i should be able to play that tune, perfectly.
7. 'Remember at all times that every time you play the right note in the right place you're as good as anyone else on the planet". Unless you get a load of fret buzz right?? haha
8.
8 months at an hour a day is about 240 hours... or ten solid days. Give yourself time.
Haha never thought about it like that lol.
9. Measured my hand ok from first to last little finger full stretch is 15 cm. But if I turn my hand like I was holding the bass my stretch is 12 cm uncomfortable max. I don't know how that measures up to others lol. I guess I'm impatient and a bit competitive. Anyhow good replies. Feeling more positive
10.
so what? honestly, and I'm being serious and not wanting to be rude, but so what if you can't do something? You'll never be victor wooton/jaco pastorious/mark king or whoever - you may never have a cd in HMV. But then I probably won't either and nor will 90% of this forum. Maybe if you practice you'll be able to make those stretches, maybe not and your fingers never will work that way - but you WILL improve as a musician. Django Reinhart changed the way people played guitar and he didn't have half his fingers- maybe physically you'll never be able to do x y and z on the bass. But that doesn't stop you. Enjoy your new bass.
This is probably what I need to hear. I have no delusions of grandeur. But my limits are hard to take lol.
11. Been playing 8 months and that's practicing most days for a hour or so, I do various exercises and while my hands are a lot quicker and I'm in control. My fingers are still not stretching. Like I say I really do put in the effort. I have bleed from practicing many times that's with calluses too lol.
12. Ok so I'm going to order a nice new Fender Mustang hopefully next Monday. My first quality bass, so to say. Which has made me question what warrants me spending that much on a bass. As the other day I realised how bad my fingers are while watching bass playing vids. I can't make certain stretches which others make look easy and I play a short scale bass! seriously for some reason my fingers do not stretch well. It's literally physically impossible rather than me just needing to stretch them. Certain parts I have to play slightly different and can most of the time get away with it but others I just can't get. A few people said I play ok. But to me I'm crap and though I've not played long, I'm starting to worry that time and practice now won't be enough. I'm not gonna stop playing and I'm still gonna order a awesome bass. But I do feel disheartened. Anyone else ever feel like that?.
13. Oh to add in my 8 months playing I've already been through 5 basses already lol. Vintage, Yamaha, Harley Benton, hofner, epiphone. Only the epiphone felt right shame it has like 3 tones.
14. I think I'm gonna have a good think. My head actually hurts with options. And questions. I'm pretty much set on shortscale. I did play 2 fender precisions recently one with the standard cricket bat neck lol and one with a jazz neck on and although I could play both I feel shortscale for me is the way to go. Maybe I should just stick with the epiphone.... but but I want a new toy.
15. Yeah another thing is I'm playing shortscale at the min. And I'm hesitant to switch back. Then there is my amp lol a carlsbro cobra 90 combo to big and loud for the house, not enough power for a gig. Lol. I'm struggling to really make up my mind one side says I should blow a few grand the other says I've only been playing 8 months and I should really wait.
16. Ok I'm coming into some money in the next 2 weeks or so. Currently I play a epiphone eb0 which to be honest I love. It's goodlooking, has a nice thin neck, it's a nice weight. But it's tonel range is very limited and the 3 point bridge apart from looking cool is a pain. And I guess if being honest I would like something with a bit more street cred. I'm looking at getting a Gibson sg bass or a fender mustang. But do I really need a better bass?. Or am I just wanting to spend money for the sake of it.
17. Just wondering what is best. As if I play with effects it masks a lot of little mistakes and errors. And I sound better and tend to play longer. If I play without effects or even unplugged I hear ever error and of course can hear fret buzz etc. And I adjust my playing to try and be technically better. But I find it frustrating and play for less. Thoughts?
18.
This has to be worth a tenner of anyones money I have one of these and it really is not a bad pedal for what it is GLWTS
Thank you mate. Bump before the bay.
19. I started of from scratch last year. I have zero natural aptitude or ability in anyway. I have no rhythm. My hands while not small, have very bad dexterity. My coordination is terrible. I have little patience for learning certain things such as theory. However what I do have is a determination not to give up and after 8 months of practicing most days to the point my hand hurts in varies places. I'm starting to get somewhere. And all aspects of my playing have greatly improved and I was even complimented by another bass player recently. I pick up and play something that I really thought when I started would be impossible for me. I'm lacking the natural ability to become a genius or great on the bass I know that will never happen. But I'm now sure that with enough practice and time most people can achieve a decent enough level.
20. Shine is the in house name for the Saein factory which make basses for a few different companies. Harley Benton are indeed apparently made there. Another good reason to buy a Harley Benton is thomann have a good return policy you don't like it send it back.
21. I would take a punt on the Harley Benton vintage jazz. I had the cheapest Harley Benton shortscale bass and even though everything was cheap after new strings and a set up it was and still is a useable instrument, my long time guitar playing friend uses it to record his own littlebass lines. So with a solid ash body, branded pickups and supposedly better hardware and decent strings the Harley Benton vintage jazz I think is worth a look. But also bought a mint Yamaha rbx for 68 pound delivered from cash generator online came next day. I sold it for 110 on eBay few months later. So check out places like that.
22. You know what Kim deal would say. Lol http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=WCPy_57z4_w
23. Price drop bump now 10 pound delivered.
24. Behringer bass overdrive (bod 400) pedal. Very good condition with new battery. No box or instructions but will pack well. Cheap pedal that works better than the price suggests, I was impressed with the high and low, cut and boost. Now only 10 pound delivered. Bargain must be worth a punt at that price.
25. Sold a digitech synth wah to Ben, very polite and easy guy to deal with.
