1.
Cabs are usually made from 3/4" Baltic ply so the sides don't vibrate. This design is the cheapest in materials and easiest to build. Many lightweight cabs use the same materials in the cab and just use a neo speaker chassis. Barefaced cabs use thin ply but extensively brace the sides to maintain rigidity and prevent energy (ie tone) being lost through the vibrating panels. IMO 30lbs is good for a 112, anything less is a bonus and 45lbs is good for a 212.
Possible daft but has anyone seen if you can gain anything from having the cab vibrate somewhat? In terms of tone/frequency response. Too add I've seen a lot of variation in cab material and thickness and weight. But I get your point.
2. Have you tried seeing if it's just dirty spraying in contact cleaner. Or you could try just replacing the case off the new one for the old one assuming you want to keep an original look.
3.
I've always wondered how old you are... You've never mentioned it before.
Pmsl literally
4. Was just wondering do lightweight cabs lose anything or gain anything over a heavier cab? Due to transfer of energy into the cab making it vibrate, from mechanical energy from the speaker itself moving and also sound wave energy bouncing off surfaces. Or is the difference so small it would not matter?
5. Bump. Ive had some nice trade offers, no harm in seeing if any others are about. I will take a bass and cash my way too. I can also set this bass up exactly to any required specs before posted if required.
6.
I think anyone who has thoughts of quitting playing under the OP's scenario was never really in it. Blue
Well I think it was just frustration and I do have goals and at times they seem so far away, also I am hard on myself and can get really down about my playing ability the fact I get that down about it suggests I am "in it". I know you started playing at a young age and I honestly wish I taken it up earlier.
Glad to hear you're carrying on. Your thread has reminded me of just how many good, friendly and helpful people there are on the Basschat forum. You may not be in a band, but you're definitely a valued member of this bass-playing community - and that's got to be worth at least as much!
Indeed bc is a great forum it's actually helped me a few times when I've really needed it and I know it has others too.
7. I don't know if this has been posted I hope so and I hope it's no ones on here lol http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Peavey-Bass-Guitar-relicked-/262278843306?hash=item3d11098baa:g:Ho0AAOSw--1WtgZt Can't believe the price it's going for utter sh*t worth maybe £30
8. Im undecided still on te gear. I find it difficult to get a sound which I like. It's very cutting or very woolly to my ears. I can get a great growl out of it. When I get it right it's great when I don't it's just not right. My 7215 smc combo sure is loud though, really is louder than much higher rated amps especially so with an extra cab, I guess it's a combination of how there eq' and the conservative rated wattage. I would like to test this theory against other gear a direct a/b, the comments over the years would seem to indicate there is such a thing as "Trace watts" Seemingly very reliable too even after 20-30 years of use. Although I do also have a old commando too that's got issues! Still very loud though. The combos are too heavy really due to the awkward size, the separate heads and cabs are more manageable. If you have a light weight cab a te head is still a very good buy.
9.
ha ha , twin-cam , that's exactly what I'm considering I have a Trace SMX GP 7 combo which is 300 watts or 500 with the 15 inch expansion cab ... i'd been looking into gettin a class D head such as a TC or perhaps even Orange bass terror . I love my trace but its old and as heavy as plutonium , I do like the tone and i like the fact that i can pretty much treat it like dirt / not worry about It living at the cold studio but yet still rely on it to do what it needs to to on stage. Also 300 watts of trace as we well know is not 300 watts in other peoples money ;-). Someone should really organise some form of event where ... people could bring there things and repsective basschatters could try differnt amps and instruments , perhaps hosted in a school or other location ... ;-) .... what would be a good name for such an event .... bass boogie .... bass bring and buy ... maybe bass bash ;-)
That's the thing with old trace stuff it's very reliable (normally) especially considering its gigging gear so they are normally left in the cold, thrown around a bit and used at high volumes for years and years most stuff is pre 2000's and much older and still going strong. There also fairly cheap so if something goes wrong or stolen even its not a huge loss. Time will tell if today's equipment will be up to that challenge. The rumble v3's certainly are very good though.
10. Hmmm I would say it's haunted and possibly something from beyond trying to communicate. Ok first thing to try would be plugging the bass into the return socket of the effects loop bypassing the pre amp, this will let you know if it's something in the pre or not. Also check that any input sockets are clean you can look up how to do this online. I've had amps make funny noises because of this. And then If you are confident opening up the amp and know what your doing then (WARNING YOU CAN GET ELECTROCUTED!) Check any valves to see if they are seated correctly and that the valve socket and pins are clean. And general condition of the valves. Check all connections within the amp. View components in general for signs of damage (if experienced) Again stating if you don't know what your doing then please don't you really really can be hurt or worse poking about in amps. That's pretty much all you can do without needing an actual repair guy look further into it. Hopefully it will just be something simple for you.
Join My Band, Durham ... Gumtree, Durham "Bassist..." ... Probably others, such as local music shops..?
Cheers I shall have a look into this later on
12. My gf has the 100w version. After I found it too boomy typically I've now learned to eq it better. I've read fender put a lot of work into the pre amp section from the 40w to the 500w versions all have that great pre amp. There is some interesting tech info on this floating about. The 200 and 500w do benefit I felt from the tweeter and bigger cab (less boom) from my limited testing. Although slightly flimsy they do seem well designed and well put together. And there all so so light. The 100w version is fairly loud but runs out of steam half way volume. And at first I like the overdrive now I'm not keen unless it's just to add a slight bit of grit. For a non scentific test I would like to see how the 500w combo performs against my old te 300w combo, genuinely interested as I might buy a 500w version but I would like to a/b the tone first. Also would like to see how much more head room if any it has.
13.
you don't have to join an established band if you feel that's too much of a leap - advertise for a starter band and see where it goes - once you find people you get on with,I guarantee it will reignite your passion for playing. Do it. Do it.
Yes I think I would maybe like to be part of something new. So how exactly do I go about seeking a starter band or any tips in general for finding a band. Do I have to write novice bass player seeks band. Zero idea how I would go about this. What to say.
14.
Have you come across the game/program Rocksmith? I ask as I find it is a wonderful tool for helping with practice and having fun with your bass. For those who might not be aware of it, the program is basically a 'game' where you connect your bass (or guitar) to your PC/PS3/XB360 via an audio interface, and the game teaches you to play songs. While some might be turned off by the appearance, which is similar to the old 'Guitar Hero' games, it is in fact a very effective way to learn new tracks, and is rather good fun. The basic Rocksmith 2014 game comes with loads of tracks (I'd guess around 100) and there are tones more you can get for a very reasonable price (packs of 4-6 songs sell for £6 or so). You learn these songs by playing along with the original recordings, and following a kind of real-time tab on screen. The game is also smart enough to scale the song to your ability. So if you are totally new then it will pick out just root notes at the start of bars, for example. As your playing becomes better it adds in more complexity a bit at a time until you end up with the full song. I honestly think it is fantastic. Not only is it great practice it is also fun to play right from the outset because you are playing full songs right away along with the full original tracks. It's also great to get the clear feedback as to where you are doing well and where you need to work on your playing. Anyhow, I hope that might help a little and at least give you something to consider as an alternative to just quitting. All the best James PS: here is a link to the steam page with the details of Rocksmith 2014 which is also on sale right now for the crazy price of £5.99 - http://store.steampowered.com/app/221680/
This might be a cool idea shame I sold my console and gaming PC last year too concentrate more on playing bass haha.
15. Gave it some thought and I'm going to carry on. Until my next wobble lol. Going to take a few things from this thread. It has reminded me that even though I get frustrated I'm actually happy with many aspects of playing and I had forgot I'm happy making my own little bass lines up too which I can play (mostly). I am also going to look into lessons again and try pluck up the courage to go at least once! Because as someone said at three years playing to get to the next level probably needs a bit more commitment and some help. Also too not be too hard on myself. And accept my limitations. There's been some great players who have worked around there own limitations and even injuries to make great things, i probably won't but who knows. Thank you for the nice words and advice.
16. I'm feeling slightly better. I need to stop worrying and rethink my goals. When I started I would of been really pleased with my current ability. And only started as a bit of a laugh really. One thing I am pleased with is I taught my gf to play as I'm pretty good with the basic techniques, I also know through trial and error what does not work and what does. So within a year she is almost as good as me. If she put in another couple of months solid practice she should take lessons as she has more potential than me. I'm really pleased with this as at first she couldn't even hold a bass. Also her dad has just started learning from me, I don't think I've seen someone struggle so much to hold a bass let alone pluck it, but I do think I can teach him and he would be over the moon if he reached my level in fact he would love to just be able to play walking on the moon. I'm not ready to join a band i will be honest here I have some issues and have ptsd so although I would love to I just don't think currently I can. I do think that would help me and much more than musically errm other with a few people I jam with I don't know any other people. So it would take a very brave effort from me. The people I jam with are I would say at a decent level and have told me I can play but I'm playing such basic stuff nearly anyone could play it.
17. Ok so I've came close to stopping playing before and I carried on but once again I'm having a bit of a wobble for much the same reasons. Today I tried to learn a few tunes and it was a horrible experience I won't say what they are through embarrassment I suppose they would be considered beginner to intermediate level. I'm not very good to put it bluntly for various reasons and I don't think I'm going to get anywhere near the standard I want and my standards are actually pretty low. I've been playing/learning for nearly 3 years and apart from a few weeks here and there I've always practiced at least an hour a day. I'm really really not a natural that and an old forearm/hand injury probably means my left hand will always struggle and it may not get much better than it is now. I can't get past a fairly basic level of playing although my basic playing and technique are alright I'm really struggling to do many songs and I won't be happy at my current level. I could go for lessons but there are a few reasons why I can't. My girlfriend thinks I should quit and said I'm clearly not enjoying it, when that's not true I do find it frustrating but I think I'm happy learning I think. And she also said bluntly at times I am not very good, which really got to me, it wasn't meant to but it basically really hurt and depressed me. I'm worried if I quit it will actually effect me, as learning to play, working on basses and so on is my main hobby now, what else will i do. Not to mention I've invested a bit of money and a lot of time learning all the aspects of fret work and replacement. General bass setup. I feel if I quit playing there is no way I would want anything to do with working on them as I would feel like I failed. And I did have plans this year to further my skills with the goal of maybe in the future doing it as a profession, that would be down the drain. At the end of last year I taken 5-6 or so weeks off playing and while I came back really enthusiastic I'm not sure if taking another break will work. I feel equally trapped between wanting to continue learning and quitting. I could argue it both ways! Someone once said maybe bass isn't for me, I don't want to hear that but maybe it isn't. It is my fav instrument and I can't see me learning anything else so if I quit it would be me quitting learning to play any instrument. Maybe I'm making to big a deal about what is a hobby but I really feel I don't have anything else going for me currently
18.
Yes, roadwear / relicing does seem to look better on Fenders, and I can't work out why Is it at least partly down to marketing? Or is there something in the overall design or shape? Do we convince ourselves of this? And is that because we have seen so many well known players, with roadworn instruments?
Its in the shape yes, all fender guitars/basses and even for the most part amps and cabs have a very classic look, being that they were a huge part of the history of electric instruments. So they take age very well. And as said fenders among other brands have huge sentimentally attached. And yes they play on there heritage through marketing. And yes we do convince ourselves too. Some old instruments do certainly seem too have something about them.
19. It is true some basses sell almost as well with wear and tear. I think it's a combination of design, some simply look good with that mojo and second is that romantic view of mojo and players of yesteryear, which brings up a few brands but Fender is at the top, there designs look strangely good with patina and they have that romanticised past appeal. It's funny but since starting this thread I've started to more and more like natural playing wear and tear (not abuse). Also started to like pre roadwork, reliced etc etc much more.
20. I think there's a certain amount of joy to be had in all those simple but fantastic sounding lines, no matter what instrument. In Adam Claytons case I think his playing is a great fit for the band. His tone seems decent too. And in general simple bass lines are mostly played in the majority of bands. You can use simple lines even when the bass is used as a lead instrument. There's loads of famous and admired bassists that mainly play in a more simplistic way that don't get anywhere near the stick that Adam Clayton has mainly in the past, it seems both on here and talkbass many now defend him and he seems more popular than he has been.
21. I got just over 14000 and it's about the same on another test I taken. I sure last year I could hear 16000 on the same kinda tests. I'm 32 I'm pretty sure I should do better although I love very loud music through headphones. My hearing is very good in volume terms still. Here is a good site with a graph of your hearing http://myhearingtest.net
22.
I feel it is stale with to many timewasters and has too many people who deal in basses selling on there and IMO there is not many bargains some people want as much if not more than the gear was new but hey thats another thread that has already been done
Yes I agree with you on the first and second points and I agree mostly with the third I think the key to getting a good price is to have money available at the right times.
23. Bump for my real nice precision bass. Will consider any trades. Try me.
24. I really want to know what the seller has said and if he is gonna pay up? And I hope he did not skimp or skip on paying extra insurance thinking it would be OK. That would be a big no no! If I send a bass it's always fully insured for loss, I even add extra for the actual cost of shipping on top of what the bass cost.
25.
Dont think I will vanish as it is a good forum I think that there are a few people on here who waffle on total bollocks but I just scroll past there posts now, And I think the market place has gone downhill IMO
Yeah I think it's best to just avoid members or posts you don't like. I try keep away from certain threads. May I ask why do you think the market place has went downhill? There's seems plenty for sale often at decent enough prices.
