Home recording set up - advice to get going please
Gunsfreddy2003 replied to Gunsfreddy2003's topic in General Discussion
Cheers guys for all of the advice coming back here it really is appreciated. Ok so it would seem sensible to stick with garage band and I am going to buy a sensible USB interface as suggested. How do I move on to get different drum loops or programme hits and accents etc - do I need a dedicated drum machine? Also if I wanted to add basic keys is it sensible to get just a keyboard module and use the standard sounds in Garageband?
I'd be very tempted to stick with Garageband for now. This should possibly be the most immediate plug in and record DAW out there. The last thing you need when beginning is complexity - much of which you won't use or will find time-consuming and ultimately off-putting. Garageband does reward exploration, and it is deceptive in it's simplicity. It does have some depth once you start using a few workarounds. I haven't yet found a compelling reason to upgrade to Logic Express for example, this after years of use and having used a few other DAWS in the past. Having said all this, if Garageband still doesn't fit you personally then there is no point in suffering the pain. Find something that does fit you - there is a reasonably wide choice. REAPER commercial but not too expensive at around £95 Logic Express - around £130 Ardour - freeware and open source Digital Performer - commercial, around £220 MU.LAB Mutools - commercial, €25 or €75 depending on version n-Track Studio - commercial, €65 Traverso DAW - freeware and open source More on here
-

Thanks for the suggestion - I will have a look at their site and the products on it. I have tried Garageband before and found it a bit difficult to use - I do like the look of the Riff Works stuff and have downloaded their free trial to see how I get on with it. Have you used their stuff at all?
Depends on your budget here, but I personally swear by Propellerhead software's Record: http://www.propellerheads.se/products/record/ Retails at around £200. It's a dedicated DAW for home audio recording: very easy to use, incredibly stable (i.e. never crashes) and produces great-sounding results. This would be my pick of the crop. A cheaper alternative (if you have a Mac) is Garageband, which comes installed free of charge: a good place to start delving into the world of home recording, but obviously limited in what it can do. There's also plenty of freeware software on the market, which you can pick up for - free! Too many to detail here, but I'm something of a home recording geek and would be happy to comment on any that you're considering. Best of luck.
-
Evening all, I am looking to set up a very small scale home studio for song writing and working on songs sent to me by band mates etc. I have a MacBook which has Garage Band on it although I have never really used it. Questions is would it better to use this a starting point and buy a USB interface to record into Garage Band or is a hardware option better such as the Belkin 4 track recorder which records direct to an ipod or the Boss Micro Studio etc? I am not a fan of programming drum machines but am pretty computer literate. Any advice or guidance on this one would be greatly appreciated. Cheers

Vintage Musitronics Mu-tron III on its way from the States

It arrived today!!! Awesome simply awesome. Does the calibration by Lingenberg make that much difference? Have you tried a non Lingenberg Mu-Tron III as a comparison?
You're going to love it.
-
Before I committed to buying my Berg cabs I took my existing rig up to Bass Direct and was able to A/B the Epi UL210 against the 1x12 Berg's and I found that the 12" Bergs were a lot warmer sounding and had a much better bottom end. That is why I changed cabs rather than a whim - perhaps Berg's just work better with Mark Bass heads than Epi cabs?
I actually sold by Berg HS210 in favour of the Epi 410UL. I had the opportunity to directly compare the two in a gigging situation and found that whilst the Berg had what can only be considered as an absolutely amazing low end for a 210 cab, it's mids were discernably more nasal. I just find the Epi a warmer cab.
Hey Connor, I had an Epifani UL210 for 4 years and only moved it on earlier this year. I have to say it was an awesome cab and easily the best of the neo speaker cabs that I tried at the Gallery at that time. It was small and light but had a massive bottom end - I always wanted to pair it with a UL115 to see how huge the sound would be but never got around to it. I have gone to Bergantino cabs now but still miss the light weight of the Epi cabs. I think that if you buy there cabs you won't be disappointed - have never tried their amps though I am afraid.
Hey guys! I've always wanted some epi gear, it looks fantastic. Only problem is I have nowhere to try it less a trip to The Gallery ie 1000 miles round trip! (Which I did 3 years ago for an Eden head! Haha!) Please could I have some info/thoughts/opinions/stories/insight/anything?! Would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks Connor
£2.5k to £4k depending on what you want on it.
How much are the rumours?
Yeah guess you are right they are very different beasts and not one better than the other although I have to say that the jazz is getting a lot more use at the moment! I remember the railway gig and yes it was a 5 with the EBS pre - I sold it a while ago as like NJE I just didn't feel that I was using the B string enough and needed some funds to pay for the GB! They are great basses for the money though and with that EBS pre they are great sounding too. I think that I will for a GB Spitfire 5 one day to match the 4 string Rumour.
There are two sides to this...GB and a 74 Jazz.. different beasts..personaly i would take the Fender...yes im envious... i remember that KS jazz you had and remember loving the tone in the Railway.been gassing for one...was it a fiver? did it have an EBS pre.?
-
You should definitely buy the GB - they really are fantastic basses. However, the Jazz Bass does have a sound of it's own too and a vintage jazz bass is probably a better investment in the long run as they do seem to hold their value more.
whats needed is must...the Overwater sounds good though...if you dont need the B dont use it...Im sure i got some jazz bass sounds out of that GB..
Perhaps illegal was the wrong word!! It is something to do with the opto-isolators and what they were made of and you can't use the same thing anymore. Sure I read it on here in the first place.
Illegal !! WTF did they use Plutonium or something ??
-
I have seen people doing this but never done it myself - could you give us the positions that you like to use and the chord name so that we can learn something new.
I use them quite a bit. I'll occasionally do the 'power chords' like you mentioned, but I much prefer to play 'fuller' chords in the upper register.
Vintage Musitronics Mu-tron III on its way from the States

Haz labs do make a re-issue called the Mu-Tron III +, I had one and could not get one decent sound out of it! Compared to the Chunk Systems Agent OO Funk or the Subdecay Prometheus it was pretty much useless which is why I did not hang on to it. In answer to your other question yes they used parts in the original Mu-Tron which I think are illegal now and apparently it is that that makes all of the difference. Like you I have wondered if it is all hype but too many people say the same thing - of you want an awesome funk sound then buy a vintage 'Tron. Surely they can't all be wrong? I have tried the EHX Q-Tron, Bass Balls and Enigma and none of them did anything for me even though Lingenberg and Beigel designed the things and they were the main guys behind the Mu-Tron! I figure that if I don't get on with the Mu-Tron at least I will know that I have tried one and I doubt it will be hard to get my money back if I decieded to sell it on.
I may sound like a fool, but why doesn't someone reissue this? What is it about them that makes the supply so short of the demand, thereby increasing the price? Does it use components that aren't manufactured any more? I've noticed that Lingenburg Sound helped developed the EHX Enigma and suggest how to make it sound like a Mutron. Does this mean the demand is simply hype? Dan
-

Are they really as good as everyone says then? I think I have tried practically every other filter on the market!
Lingenberg does the best work. He did mine.
-
I pulled the trigger on a vintage Mu-Tron III a few weeks ago from Ebay USA. I have had it shipped to Lingenberg Sound where he has re-calibrated it, made it true bypass, added an on/off LED and modded to take a 9v power supply. It should be shipped back this week and I can't bloody wait! I have heard so much about these pedals that I just hope that it lives up to the hype! I will be gutted if not as I have spent a small fortune on buying it, the mods and shipping. Mark

Martin recently bought a Zoom pedal from me - very quick payment and polite and efficient comms. A joy to do business with.
