Good things come in flea's.... I mean three's
Fair enough... I appreciate everyone's priorities are different. I've had a few back issues, but more related to arthritis in my hip... luckily not for a while now. Guess I'm too stubborn to go light...
Some of best sounding. basses I've owned have been 'heavy' (it's all subjectively relative weight wise isn't it?), so there's nowt wrong with your stubbornness if you're enjoying them!
It's not accurate It's not a criticism, it's a query, as it's just a bit surprising and a subject i've never come across.......
Just count yourself very lucky that you're not a chronic pain sufferer, because if you were this'd all make sense to you. I'm a little astounded that you don't get most people either need to look after their back or want to do the best they can to prevent issues. But, my smiley was genuine because we all think differently, so this isn't a dig at you, simply an honest reply with no prejudice.

That looks almost identical to one of the two that I use to own, except mine had a tort plate. They are great basses, the ceramic pickup sounds 'harder' to me than a regular alnico stingray one, that's no bad thing at all as they have their own character. The three way switch is useful,, the single coil option is noiseless and sounds very clear and the series option gives a good whack when playing loud, the parallel is typical Music Man. The 3 band eq is also very useful. Though they are small, some of the ash body ones can be heavy, which is why I sold mine years back, but if you don't mind that it's well worth a play and is great value for money second hand, though you can get them for less that the £899 at Mansons.

How about a second hand Sunburst Music Man Sterling? (Not the new cheaper ones, but the USA one with the smaller body and thinner neck).

Is a '63 Precision worth at least twice as much as a '73 ?
Re-phrasing my original question, who here has paid loads more for their 60s than for their 70s P, and specifically why?
I had 70's basses at the time I moved into Pre CBS. The reasons were: I) it suited me (vibe, feel, sound, look) and my band (style) II) i wanted the supposed 'best possible' vintage era Fender III) i thought they were cool bits of history IV) I needed to get it out of my system Now it's well and truly out of my system, and my current P's are perfect for me and have a great value for money return despite being around £2k each. So it's never again unless I've got huge expendable income to throw around for the fun of it. Like that'll happen I guess I'm mostly interested in this thread because the prices are wild now, so you need a damn good reason to get one if it's a lot of money to you. -

Chiliwailer replied to JapanAxe's topic in Bass Guitars
The answer is no they aren't worth twice the price in my honest opinion, and I've owned a great deal of pre CBS and 70's Fenders. But that doesn't mean I'm right.... The pre 1968 Fender basses have a feel and vibe all of their own, which is lovely when you get a good one and very meh when you get an average one, and there's a fair few of those. But, that kind of vibe is difficult to replicate so they have a certain uniqueness which has huge appeal. But I don't think that makes them better, just different, which leads you to price... Which are now are insane for pre CBS and many later ones, so basically the value for money as a players bass has totally gone. If you get an all original one then at least you have a 'collectable' that'll hold value for being original. Getting a non original one is an entirely different story and will only make sense if you really want that old school vibe. Theres no reason not get a refinished one if you can afford it, want the vibe and want it as a players bass, just remember these days you really are paying for the privilege of playing some very cool rock n roll history. This is just my opinion and all that, many will argue it and I wouldn't blame them -
NBD: Mike Lull PT4 P Bass with T'Bird pickups
Correct. Badly worded on my part and now edited
Apparently reversed engineered from a set of 1964 Thunderbird pickups. -

I noticed that had disappeared off the Bass Direct website, good work Nick! Those pickups always sound lovely when I hear them on sound clips. Very cool bass, absolutely love my Lull's -
I like the modern touches on these basses, and also the way the logo tips the hat to the guys back in the day that used to swap necks and end up with a Jazz Bass logo neck on a P Bass body. This isn't a bass for someone precious about a logo, but for someone adventurous and wanting something different this'd be a great bass

Boss Effects Book
Chiliwailer posted a topic in Accessories & Other Musically Related Items For Sale
2001 edition. Used, not abused but not new of course. Pretty rare book. I can't find out much about these price wise, only other one on eBay is £35 (USA one, not the one I just listed!) and on Amazon they are £39. Cool book for Boss fans and collectors. £30 posted. Now £130 This pedal is so good, but due to having built in tremolo on my new Princeton and not using a pedalboard anymore this isn't getting used. Gutted as it's the best trem pedal I've ever used These have 3 types of Tremolo wave length options set via a 3 way switch, 2 speed settings with their own independent speed control that are switched by a foot switch, the 3rd footswitch gives you a very cool and cutting trem that acts like a kill switch being used, think RATM, but very usable. The tone on these is perfectly warm and vintage styled yet as clear as a bell. It has a volume control which is essential as many trem pedals suffer from volume drop. Finally, you can add 2 expression pedals to change trem speed or depth on the fly, sounds so good! It's in perfect working order, Velcro on bottom and is simply delicious! Check out YouTube etc, incredible and versatile pedal It's in perfect working order, Velcro on bottom and is simply delicious! £65 inc postage, An excellent pedal for guitar or bass, it's essentialy a volume boost but is actually quite versatile. I first used this on bass to switch between active and passive basses to match the output level, then when I didn't need to do that anymore I used it on my old guitar amp for some lovely sparkle as the amp was quite average. That was a nice bonus but these are really boost pedals that can give you more gain for solos, slapping, tapping etc, help when switching guitars with varied output levels or to drive valve amps when needed (did you hear that Ampeg users? ) The addition of the tone controls for the Custom Shop version is perfect, very sensitive and usable EQ. Works great, has some Velcro on the bottom. Cheers!
