1.
Been considering another p bass build and lack of dosh has got me thinking about using a Squier body. So just wondering if the american fender pick guards fit? Advice gratefully received.
Have a word with Howard (The BassDoc), he might have the correct Squier template. He made a replacement Torty guard for my Sue Ryder P copy that fitted perfectly - no drilling or filing (apart from a little around one of the pot spines as it was a tight fit) was required.
2. I've got the same gauge set on my fretless Ray. Spot on, a little brighter than some but very smooth and a nice medium tension. Can't go wrong at £20.
3. Cracking bass that...unfortunately don't have a nice 70s Jazz to offer up for it. Bump anyways..
4. Think the markets slow at the minute Nick. If I could get a trade on a decent CS P bass then I'd probably rejoin the Fender owners club.
5. Cheers Nick, That's worth thinking about, Maybe I should have never let that very nice MIA P bass of yours I once owned go though eh? Hindsight is a wonderful thing!
6. Well I've had a go at trading my Ray 30th for a custom shop Precision or vintage Precision of similar value with no success so far...however I don't really want to stick it back under the bed so here's asking how I could 'calm' it down a bit. I've found the Sue Ryder P that I usually use for jam nights and tough venues works great in the acoustic band I'm in, however the Ray and my Status are a bit too 'in yer face'. The Ray 30th has a great deep punchy core tone which doesn't really suit but is there anything I could do to tame it a bit? I've thought of flats but had a bad experience a few years back on a thru body bass where the G snapped at the ferrule and nearly took my eye out lol, but please, all suggestions welcome.
7. Considering this job myself on the Affinity neck on my Sue Ryder. TBH I'm going for standard open backs and having the peg holes drilled accordingly rather than looking for good quality closed backs with the guitar type pegs. I'd agree the tuners are crap but while they don't hold tune for weeks at a time like on decent Fenders/MMs mine do hold out ok for a couple of sets through the night - if yours can manage that I wouldn't be overly concerned.
8. Great bass and great story Nick. Still searching for that perfect P bass meself, with a 'significant' milestone birthday coming up in the next 18 months or so, I'm already thinking about a serious reduction of the fleet to sequester that 'special' one that will stay with me into old age...''sniff''
9.
Sorry - if you want offers put it on eBay. Rules of this forum state you must give a price, thanks .
Think he meant trade offers....
10. Sorry to see this coming up Andy, times is hard in the Republic......great colour combo on a great bass, good luck with the sale.
11. Pity I've nothing to tempt you, this would suit me down to the ground
12. Sold one of these a few months back...cheap as chips and great fun but had GAS for a Sue Ryder I'd put a strap pin back in the hole - on mine the plate pin position made the bass balance like Sh......
13. Further info: This is no ordinary MM, the body is mahogany (but fortunately isn't heavyweight, the bass comes in at about 9lb5oz) with a trans red finish. Through body stringing (no bridge loading option on this one). The neck is gloss finished in trans red and is highly figured birdseye maple. In essence you're getting a 'Classic' but with the more comfortable contoured body and 3eq...oh and the fact that 783 were made and no more will be appearing. Soundwise there is a difference to a standard Ray, a bit more low down punch and a bit less harsh at the top end but YMMV. It will take a 'special' Fender to prise this one away from Chez MTB.
14. Yup eb minor. I used to play it in eb on my now departed 5 string ray fretless. I now play it in e on a ray 4 fretless. No loss really.
15. The 30th is in near perfect nick (a few light swirlies on the pickguard and tiniest of a dinglet on the tip of the headstock - microscope needed) and comes in the 30th Anni C&G case. Trade wise I'm a fussy bugger but would consider pretty good examples of US made P or J's (rosewood preferred) with cash my way, standard US made Stingray/Sterling with cash my way or 70's Fender or Custom shop P or J's (as a straight trade). 16. Weve only been married 25 years so she's still hoping I grow out of it
17. As BP would probably say 'it's an intelligence test and you failed!'
18. I think like a few on here have already said contact S&T they are your best bet. I've found them great to deal with, they fall over themselves to help even on old used ebmms.
19.
Is it that time again Mart? It's been a while since you last teased me. £500? (and no not for that SR!)
Nah, just I don't have a quality 'passive' and maybe could do with one. The 30th would always be out of the door before the Status but I don't think it's that time just yet.
20. You're probably right C, GAS is a lifelong condition only managed by (in)discriminate spending. I know what you're saying regarding the Fender too, there are many dogs out there masquerading as 70s Fenders......what to do?
21.
For giggles, here's Jazzneck's 82, the kosher one and a 93 to contrast. Personally, I think the lower curve from the nut to the G tuner looks all wrong but, hey, let the internet be the judge.
Looks like a Jazz width at the nut also.........didn't think they made a pre eb sterling?
22.
Please explain - is that a statement, exclamation or a question? M.
Maybe an insult? I've been called worse......
23. Pete....... One thing we have ascertained is that you are an obsessive hoarder and as such should change your sig to OBSESSIVEstingraypete1977HOARDER until you're better. Sorry, couldn't resist it. Hold on, I've only got one less SR than you, does that make me a slightly less obsessive hoarder? Scary.
24. Well, after the acquisition of my LMIII I thought I was finally GAS free in both the Bass and Rig department. Well, I was for about 2 days, the time between getting the LMIII and a rehearsal session with a new band. Well, the new band is a bit of a departure for me, it's turned into more of an acoustic/female vocal type animal....very different from the 60s/70's and classic rock of the other 2 combos I play with. So, my current bass line up pretty much did every thing I needed; the Status for rock and grit, the Ray 30th for the same should I need it, the Ray fretless for, well, fretless moments and............and there's the problem, the modified Sue Ryder. I was using the Status for the new band and all seemed ok but last week I didn't have time to sort my gear out and grabbed the first bass to hand.....the Sue R. Unexpectedly I found that it worked a treat for the laid back stuff that the new band has gravitated towards (yes, better than the Status and the Ray 30th). So, here's the dilemma, being cashless (and the threat of redundancy being just around the corner) should I: 1. Press the Fretless Ray into service for the new band exclusively, lie back and think of Pino, 2. Sell everything but the Sue R, trick out the Sue R and go on a nice holiday with the difference, 3. Put the Ray 30th up for trade against a nice 70s Fender P bass (hopefully one that doesn't weigh more than 2 fat dogs) Answers on a postcard to..........
25. I would love this......a stingray, a kidney?
