I’ve just collected the Mustang from the workshop. The controls are now blend and no-load tone. Honestly it’s made a really big difference. Technically I’m not sure why but the blend gives a much more usable range of sounds which keeps each pickup ‘in play’ for a wider range. The front/back/both settings were distinct before but in between settings the favoured pickup would take over. But now I can really dial in a bit of snap from the J ‘to taste’ The tone control is fantastic - at full it’s as it was before, bright and cranky. From around 9 down to 3 there’s a really usable range with a nice sounding roll off as you go, then it gets very dark from 2-1. I’ve been playing my stingray for the last week whilst it been away and it felt massive! I got used to it again but now the mustang feels tiny again. I really missed it!

Tbh unless it's something you can't get elsewhere or that you REALLY want, I'd definitely claim back via PayPal and explain it as 'item not received' - the tracking will show that it hasn't, so you'll be golden.

A good sound! I think it’s always good to know what your amp sounds like ‘neutral’ so you can understand the gear better. Then when you add EQ you know whether you’re fighting to get away from the baked in tone or adding to a sound you already like.

Here’s a graphic I found. I’m sure it’s not 100% true to scale and angle but you can see what I mean. Btw I’m not sure the ‘66 is accurate as they didn’t come in blue and the earliest ones have a more offset shape like the bass in the middle. I might be wrong but it also seems that the new Squier mustangs with the competition stripes have less rounded body edges than the CV Squiers without the stripes? -

Interesting to note the changes in the Mustang body shape over the years. There’s a lot more body behind the bridge now, whereas there was only a very small area before, accentuated only by the slightly more offset shape at the back than there is now. It probably means less neck dive, though my Squier has such a light body it dives anyway (not that I mind) but my Fender feels balanced. -
You’re certainly correct that he doesn’t need to worry about the police. Maybe if we can get footage of him using his hose…

UK ‘Police’ don’t care. This will go on forever.

Ah! Buying an instrument is such an emotional process, and we get so attached to them afterwards that it’s always a warning flag if things don’t look good from the off. I’ve just left my Mustang with my trusted guitar tech who’s going to change the controls to blend and tone, with a nice no-load tone pot and paper in oil capacitor which should give a really nice range of usable control. He’s also going to shield the cavities but each layer of paint takes 24hrs so I won’t see her for a week or so Still, I think it’ll make the little mustang even more usable. I’ve properly fallen for it!!

If you want something like a substantial gig bag, then apparently this case fits the Mustang (interior is 42.5", not sure about the width at the top for the tuners, or if this length is with the internal cushion removed) https://www.gatorcases.com/products/guitar/gig-bags/guitar-gig-bags/gator-cases-icon-series-gig-bag-for-electric-guitars-g-iconelectric/ Wonder if anyone's tried one - they don't seem to be available in the UK but I found one here for £171 https://www.musik-produktiv.com/gb/gator-hga-g-iconelectric.html

If you don’t need a wide strap then you could get one of the D’Addario Auto Lock straps

I don’t think my 66 bridge allows top loading, does/did yours?

Yeah I’d like a pawn shop although I’m not sure the sound is ‘me’ - but obviously I need to complete the collection 😂 its true they seem quite rare in the UK. There was one in Germany for £700 ish recently

See they got the tuning pegs all wonky in The 70s 😂

I do on the G string of my stingray. For some reason the string slips otherwise - it’s fine on all the others. -
I did a really short video - I'll do a longer one with more sounds at some point! This is a palm muted groove with front pickup and rear on about half way

Interesting to note that this is one of the first Mustang basses (Sept 66) before the bass specific logos arrived. It would have had the word 'Bass' added from the Bass V instead, which has come off. The proper 'Mustang Bass' decals can be seen on basses from approbations Nov 66 onwards and is reproduced on the JMJ

Mine are the same (on my P bass). I bought a spare set (760fx) and the silks are green, which La Balla confirmed is genuine. The 760MUS set on my mustang all line up perfectly but I suppose they would as they’re designed specifically for that one bass - I thought some of you might find it satisfying!

I’d probably post it with UPS and then insure with someone separate https://www.secursus.com/en-gb/

Cheers, yeah me too - the pickups in this give it a really full P bass bark and the J soloed is super punchy and ‘parpy’ - and used solo it has plenty of volume and ‘body’, whereas I usually find a single bridge pickup needs a bit of a bump in bass and vol. It’s a really fun little thing, dead pleased with it!

Just to join the thread with my recent modded '66 'stang. I'll be hoovering up all the posts here later as a recent Short Scale pilot. To be honest, I love the Mustang but I don't really notice the different scale that much - I've always used light strings so the tension is familiar, and the bass sounds very similar to my full scale P. The size is really convenient and I love miniaturisation so I love it to bits, but it feels completely natural and not that different practically to a full scale. I'm changing the controls (vol/vol) to balance/tone soon. I think the shorter scale does accentuate the different hand positions and pickup blends - small change shave a big effect. I didn't expect one of my fave sounds being to use the top thumb rest and play on the end of the neck. Fave overall though is P pickup with 50% of the Jazz, digging in and letting the notes rasp - it sounds really fruity. I've been playing it and looking at it so much these last few days that the shape just seems 'right' to me visually. 'Normal' basses look awkward now. Before, I thought Mustangs looked awkward. Weird. -
