2. Wow, what a stunner.
3. I have the AC1, I would suggest it's fine for practicing at home, but nothing beyond that. Mega distortion on any volume that's audible, but like I say quite alright for home practicing, and not bad with phones.
4. I'm lucky enough to have 2 fretless basses, rounds on one and flats on t'other. The basses only owe me about a ton the pair, so shouldn't need to be moving 'em on any time soon.
5. Watch out for the Belgian drivers if you go that way. The ring road in rush hour is not for the faint hearted.
6. Thanks chaps, I was hoping to get another sneaky chance to play one again today whilst Mrs Phil was shopping but it all fell through. The cold light of (sober) dawn didn't dampen my enthusiasm for the SG. One thing I didn't mention last night is that I found it difficult to get much tonal variation from the controls, which are 2 volume and one tone. But then again I'm not one for bothering to fiddle much, I'm sure I could dial it in on the amp anyway. One thing that attracts me to it anyway is that it's NOT active, so you won't need a pocketful of PP3s every time you go out. The EB3 of course has more controls but just doesn't feel the same.
7.
Hi. Following from the below, I'm now looking at an Epiphone Thunderbird. Does that have a relatively slim neck, compared to the Ibanez SR range.....? Basically, I'm after a bass with a fairly punchy sound, which costs less than £300 and would suit someone at a very basic level. I bought an Epiphone Viola a few months ago, but in hindsight, that was probably a mistake. Many thanks.
You could call it a mistake, but you could also call it a necessary step in the learning process. We've all make them. And we make as many mistakes in selling the wrong things as much as buying the wrong things.
8. Have spent a few hours in Anderton's in Guildford over the last 2 days, and have amassed a few observations I would like to share if I may. Great shop, no complaints about that or their staff, only compliments! I was intent on buying a 5 sting Ibanez SR 305, but couldn't commit to it. The thought of being a barely adequate 4 string player VS a severely struggling 5 string player finally won. Fact, as I see it. Every Ibanez you pick up from the bottom of the range to the top has a fantastic, beautifully get up neck and inspires without even resorting to the EQ. But the recessed jack socket on the 300 and upwards whilst looking cool, is too tight and bound result in chips outa the wood. I tried a Squier 5 string Jazz. Beautiful looking with maple neck, block inlaid markers and black bindings, but the tone pot was as crackly as barbequed pork. Today they had an identical S/H one and the pots were fine!!! I have fallen head over t*t for the 2104 Gibson SG in cherry stain. Yes, I would love to have been Jack Bruce (tho' he now only seems to play Warwicks) but the action is a bit higher than I would like and looking at that poxy 3 point bridge I wonder if I could set it up to suit me. The 30.5" scale concerns me. Does that mean I'm spoiled for any other bass I might want to play? Looking down the 12th fret is equivalent to about D flat on a 34" scale bass (like my others are) I ain't clever enough to translate stuff into two different scale lengths and spacings am I? And YES, contrary to popular belief (spread mainly by guitards) I do play above the 5th fret, and often do mainly on one string to maintain the consistency of volume and tone. So there you are, the observations of a slightly tipsy bass buyer after 2 hard but fruitless days shopping in the excellent Anderton's in Guildford. Mrs Phil spent the afternoon in TK Maxx, so all was quiet on that front!!! Should I go back tomorrow and bag that SG, it felt more right that any other bass I've played so far, and you've got to play a few to know, right? But the 30" scale???
9. Not my cup of tea, but I can see the beauty within. Good luck.
10.
I walked into Guitar Guitar intent on buying a £150 Affinity Strat. And walked out with a, sonic blue, £650 Classic player. They're evil........they knew I was weak.......they should have talked me out of it I can't even play guitar.
Haha!
11.
Working up to a new fretless*, so popped into Dawson's in Reading on my way home today. At least 50 basses on display. Not one fretless. Where are they all!? *No PMs please!
I must have just missed you, I left there at 4.45pm. I fancied a look at the Pelham Blue EB3 but the action was so high you could get your hand between the E string and the fretboard. And no, not a fretless in sight.
12. Cream, Sunshine (Live)
13. Don't think I could watch the whole lot in one go. Hopefully it'll be shown on Sky and I can record it and watch it in bite size chunks.
14. R.I.P. to one of the very best.
15. Me too. Love 'em, though perhaps whoever I play with may not be so keen. It's a "me" thing.
16. As a learner player I wanted a 5 string, despite starting on a 4, I felt that if I was learning anyway, might as well learn 5 string. Just to make it easy on myself I went for a 5 string fretless........ Admittedly, playing both wasn't a smart idea, but I found it took a while to be sure "where i was" on the 5, and whilst I love the sound of the bottom B, it was all too much and I reverted to a 4. Trouble is I'm now always looking for notes below bottom E. If you are seriously committed to playing a 6, and willing to practice, then what are you waiting for?
17. He never really did it for me. Apart from School's out, that driving bass is amazing.
18. Did they run out of varnish???
19. Why bother with all the electrics? Just put beads on the strings of a regular bass and it could double as an abacus. 8, 10, and 12 string basses would be ideal for this as they're no good for much else
20. Get halfway through a song and get "SYNTAX ERROR"
21. Down to you brother.....
22. OMG, so Mumford & Son didn't invent country music. I'm deeply shocked!!!
